August Presidents Message from Joann Hale
It was fascinating to watch the “magic” happen on Friday evening, July 20. When I arrived around 4:30, it was just the beginning of the setup for the Sum-mer Art Festival. Judson Street was its normal self and yet there was the feel-ing that something magical was about to happen. The next morning when I ar-rived around 9:30, the whole area was suddenly the Gig Harbor Summer Arts Festival. As an outsider (first time to this festival) I watched as everything feel together and suddenly Judson Street was filled with vendors, music, children, teens and adults and dogs! I even saw a young man with something that
looked like a large lizard, wrapped around his neck – on a leash of course. Sunday was more of the same. And, as if by magic, at 5:00 PM everyone was packing up and little Judson Street re-turned to its normal self. It reminded me of the movie “Brigadoon.” Although most of my time was spent at the Summer Art Exhibit at 7 Seas, as far as I could see, the entire event ran smoothly, without a problem or complaint.
Special thanks to Pam Jenkins and her awesome committee. They started planning in January with every detail covered that included permits, permits and more permits. Charli Meacham’s music se-lections were perfect for the occasion. I watched her set up and breakdown the tables and chairs, continually clean those tables throughout the festival and even play her violin for 2-1/2 hours on stage without a break. You couldn’t miss our volunteers in their bright colored aprons assisting visi-tors at the Information booth, and elsewhere around the area. It’s impossible to thank everyone personally who helped make that weekend so very special. Kudos to PAL!
With regards to the Summer Members Art Show – we had over 700 visitors at our 2-day event at 7 Seas. Thirty-four PAL artists exhibited their wonderful art. An over-whelming number of votes for the People’s Choice Award went to Gertrudes Asplund for her fabulous watercolor.
Well, we can all catch our breath now and enjoy the remaining lazy days of summer. I can’t be-lieve it’s August already but do welcome the sudden change in weather and glad the heat-wave is finally over. We’ll all be back to work in September as we prepare for the Open Juried Art Show at the Harbor History Museum in October and the Fall Members Art Show at Morso, also in October.
Rest up – you’ll be busy!

Our next general meeting will take place in September when we'll elect officers and board
members for next year. It will also be a screening opportunity for new members and mem-
bers who're working in new mediums. We need a few volunteers to take over some of our
events and activities in 2019:
— We need a new manager for our Resource Gallery;
— We need a new coordinator for our 2019 Open Juried Show.
— We need new coordinator for our yearly TCC shows.
— We need a co-chair for our 2019 Summer Art Festival.
Want to help? Contact Joann Hale for more information — [email protected]
