Sub: Technical Circular on Year of manufacturing codification on TM & MSUBearings used in Electric 10comotives/EMU/MEMUs.

1. Purpose:In order to access the life of bearings and plan for schedule replacement, date of manufacturingof these bearings is required. Bearing manufactures normally etch out code for month & year ofmanufacturing, instead of giving date/month of manufacturing.

2. Scope of Application:

This technical circular is being issued to inform the manufacturing date & year of bearings toplan for replacements based on its life. Bearing manufactures normally etch out code for month& year of manufacturing, instead of giving date/month of manufacturing. De-coding details ,used by different bearing manufacturers for manufacturing date/month/year have been given asAnnexure-1 for traction motor and MSU bearings of electric Locomotives/EMU/MEMU .

3. Procedure:

4.1 New Bearings:-While fitment of new bearings at a motor manufacturer/POH Shop/Shed,the following information should be recorded on the basis of decoding the codes etchedout on side of face of bearing (face of outer ring and inner ring):

• Make of bearing• Manufacturer's code indicating year/month of manufacturing as per Annexure-1• Country of origin• Designation of bearings• Cage information (riveted or rivet less)

4.2 Opening for overhauling: While opening a bearing for overhauling of the traction motoror MSU, Sheds/POH shops should maintain clear record of the bearing taken outcontaining the following information:

• Make of bearing• TM position and No.• Date of failure• Date of commissioning of bearing• Month/year of manufacturing country of origin


MonthlYear of manufacturing and country of origin should be decoded as per Annexure-1

4.0 Failure/premature replacement of bearings:

4.1 While overhauling of TMlWheel, when a bearing found unserviceable, its life may bejudged based on the following:• Date of commissioning of bearing• Manufacturer's code indicating year/month of manufacturing.

4.2 All failure of bearings indicating premature replacement during overhauling should bereported to the respective firm immediately asking them to depute their representativefor joint investigation.

4.3 The failed bearing should be preserved till completion of joint investigation is to becarried out.

4.4 Copy of investigation report jointly signed by firm representative and Railway shouldbe sent to RDSO.

The failed bearing should be scraped after making weld cut on bearing.

A summary of manufacture's codes for bearing is enclosed as Annexure-1

5.0 Applies to :All Bearings used on Traction Motor & MSU of electric locomotives/EMUs/MEMUs

6.0 Agency of implementation-All motor manufacturers/Repairers/All POH shops/All Electric Loco Sheds

7.0 Periodicity of implementation:During assembly and overhauling of TM/MSU
