Productivity is the outcome of effectiveness and efficiency.

At first glance, the definition of productivity seemed similar to efficiency. When in strategy, however, they differ very much from each other. As efficiency is about doing the same with less but productivity is about doing more with the same.

To date, organisations made efficiency advancements by identifying waste within operations with help from tools and techniques like spans and layers analysis, six sigma, process re-engineering and more. Despite so, benefits from increasing efficiency can start to taper when efficiency peaks.

By improving productivity, we can keep up better performance. Perks from higher productivity include savings on inputs (e.g. capital, material, and labour) while still being able to maintain the same output.

The subsequent question is: How to?

This can be achieved by streamlining processes or service work flows and by increasing the value of outputs with innovation and technology.

Some of the initiatives include identifying hotspots impeding the organisation’s value stream to customers and adopting technology to enhance productivity by improving efficiency and effectiveness. On the other hand, we can enhance our value propositions with innovation and development of high-value products and services.

Productivity or Efficiency? In the new year lying ahead with uncertainties growing in global markets, it is imperative for organisations to retain competitive advantage in order to thrive amidst all the possible changes and challenges. To do so, productivity is one of the key ingredients.
