No Country For Old Men

Cormac McCarthy

• Born July 20, 1933

• Written ten books

• Won the Pulitzer Prize

• Served in the USAF 1953 to 1957

Sheriff Ed Tom Bell • the main protagonist • a laconic World War II veteran who oversees the

investigation and the trail of the murders even as he struggles to face the sheer enormity of the crimes he is attempting to solve.

• His reminiscences serve as part of the book's narration.

Anton Chigurh • the main antagonist• a sociopathic hetman • prone to extreme violence and philosophical

musings • He is in his 30s • A man of dark and vaguely exotic complexion

Llewelyn Moss • a self proclaimed retired welder

• Vietnam War veteran

• He is in his 30s

• He is my favorite Character because he never quits and is thinking that he can get out of this mess.

• And he is an average Joe

Agnes • Moss’s mother in law

• Has cancer

• She was my least favorite character because she was one of those old nagging old women who hates everything

Exposition

• The book starts off by Sheriff Bell talking about the glory days of Sheriff and wonders how they would do now.

• Chigurh is caught and arrested by a deputy, but then kills the deputy and takes a police car just to take another guys

• Moss is out hunting and hits a deer and follows it a blood trail

Rising action

• The first rising action is when he finds the money in a Mexican drug deal gone wrong and everyone is dead, but one who is dying

• Moss goes back to the seen to see if he can help but the guys who did that are there and begin hunting him down.

• Moss has his wife go back to her mother’s house• Chigurh begins hunting him down with an epic

gun battle• Sheriff Bell is on the trail and is trying to protect

Moss

Climax

• Moss is killed before Sheriff Bell can catch up to Moss and offer his help

• Chigurh gets the money Moss found

Falling Action

• Moss’s mother in law dies from cancer

• Chigurh finds Carla Jean Moss and tells her that he must kill her to keep his promise with her husband, but tells her she must call a coin toss to save her life, she refuses to and he kills her.

• Chigurh gets into a terrible car accident but walks away with a broken arm

Resolution

• Chigurh returns the drug money to the people who originally gave it to him.

• Now retired, Bell shares two dreams with his wife , both involving his deceased father. In the first dream he lost "some money" that his father had given him; in the second dream, he and his father were riding horses through a snowy mountain pass. His father, who was carrying fire in a horn, quietly passed by Bell with his head down and was "going on ahead, and fixin' to make a fire" in the surrounding dark and cold. When Bell got there, he knew his father would be waiting. Then he woke up.

Setting

• West Texas it is important because this where the drug trafficking is the largest

• 1980 is important because it is when the drug trafficking begins to get violent and begins to look like a war.

Themes

• In the end, everyone in No Country for Old Men is both hunter and hunted, members of some endangered species trying to forestall their extinction.

• That nothing is for certain. You can never be for sure what will coming your way.

• "The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure.” Sheriff Bell. This is to show us the nature of crime is now evolving and its hard to figure it out.

Rating

• I would give this book a 9 out of 10. This book is simply brilliant, its only downfall is that it has three story lines being followed at once and makes transitions abrupt so its hard to know who is the story following at the moment

Moral Decay of Society• The topic found throughout the book is the

moral decay of society. During this time period society hit an catalyst for decay of moral values.

• ("No Country For Old Men." Behind The Big Screen : No Country Sheriff Diary. Web. 28 Feb 2010.)

The major points

• The points I’ll cover on Social decay are

• Crime violent and nonviolent

• Divorce rate

• Drugs

Crime• Crime is the breach of rules or laws for

which some governing authority ultimately prescribes a conviction. Individual human societies may each define crime and crimes differently

• "Crime." Wikipedia. Web. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime>.

(“FBI Crime Clock" )

• Over the years the principal of crime has remained the same. However in recent years crime has sky rocketed and the method in which they are done. They have been doing crimes which would have boggled the minds of people 20 yrs ago.

Divorce rate

• The rapid divorce rate is causing many problems to the moral fiber of society

• It causes emotional unrest in many children and causes them to turn to many things to have that void filled.

• However most of them turn to violence go gangs and drugs

Drugs• Drugs have caused major moral issues. • Teen drug use statistics state that in the last 30 years, 50%

of teenagers reported abusing alcohol with 32% being drunk on at least one occasion. In a survey of eighth graders, 30.3 percent reported having used illegal drugs while 52.8% of high school seniors were drug users.

• According to to the Drug abuse facts it is way expensive for society to fight

• "Teen Drug Use." n. pag. Web. 28 Feb 2010. <http://www.teendrugabuse.us/teendrugstatistics.html>.

How do we combat this?

• By instilling in our youth a higher moral code.

• Get the youth to want an education
