No 8 Wednesday 27th March 2019 KFPS News Respect, Responsibility, Teamwork and Being Your Best Dear Parents and Friends, Welcome to week 9 of the term. We have just over a week left before school holidays commence. We have enjoyed such a positive and wonderful first term. I wish to thank our students and families for the contributions that you have made over this term. In this week’s newsletter I wish to focus on our school value of Responsibility. A responsible person is one who is able to act without guidance or supervision because he or she is accountable for their behaviour. A responsible person is trusted or relied upon to do the right thing on their own. Last week I watched some of our House Captains demonstrate the value of responsibility by organising our Grade 3-6 House Sport selections. Awesome effort! Our Positive Behaviour Matrix shows our students that ‘Responsibility’ in the learning setting is demonstrated by: Following classroom rules Taking care of all belongings Using our things safely Moving quietly & carefully Being early to learn Exiting with permission Using learning time properly Having fun as I learn Numeracy I have included in this week’s newsletter a section on ‘Exploring Numeracy with your child’. Numeracy has a strong focus in our Annual Implementation Plan and I encourage you to have fun with your children around Numeracy and the everyday activities that can be done to support their confidence and understanding of Maths. Parent Teacher Interviews Please don’t forget that our Grades 1-6 students have their 3 Way Conference schedule at the end of next week. Thursday 4 th April from 3:45pm – 7:15pm and Friday 5 th April from 8:45am – 12 noon. Please Note: Friday 5 th April is a pupil free day. SENTRAL Parent Portal We have opened up our Parent portal for our families of Grade 1- 6 students to make their online bookings for Parent-Teacher interviews. Each family has received their personalised code to log in with. This is a new system and I thank parents for your patience as you learn alongside us as to how to use this portal. I do understand that some families have not been able to adequately access the portal with their family log in code. I apologise if you are finding the system initially difficult. If you are experiencing any difficulty in logging into SENTRAL and booking your child’s interview then PLEASE come in to our office and see Lorraine or Ange. They will absolutely support you in gaining access to your child’s portal details and book your interview. The parent portal will allow you to see the Attendance data for your child/ren, book your child’s 3 way conferences and see important messages.

EXPLORING NUMERACY WITH YOUR CHILD Exploring sports Sports provide a good opportunity to engage your child in maths, particularly if they are a keen sports person. Here are some questions to ask your child when watching or playing their favourite sport: How does your favourite sport tally the score? What maths is presented on the tally? How do other sports tally the score – for example, tennis, golf, cricket, netball, football? What maths do you use to find the total of the scores? Who is at the top of the ladder? How is this determined? Are there other ways to record the score? How long do your favourite sport games go for in minutes and seconds? How is the time in the

game divided? Into halves, quarters or something else? What are the shapes of different playing fields and courts? Talk about edges and angles. How can you estimate the perimeter and area of a playing field? How many cars could be parked on the MCG field? How could we work this out? Watching the

weather because it changes daily, the weather can be a great topic to discuss maths with your child.

Try these activities: Visit the website http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/ Ask your child the difference between each day’s minimum and maximum temperatures. Please see the link below for more information. https://www.education.vic.gov.au/Documents/school/teachers/teachingresources/discipline/english/

Last Friday we were very fortunate to have Dion Drummond perform for us. Our students enjoyed learning more about the indigenous Aboriginal culture.

Multicultural Sports Day

Last Thursday the Grade 3-6 EAL and Koorie students attended a Multicultural Sports Day run by AFL Central Victoria and Netball Victoria. It was held at Bendigo North oval and students rotated through 6 different netball and footy activities. Our students met with other EAL students from Kennington and St Peter’s Primary Schools. Foxy Vixen and Jesse the AFLCV Mascot also attended. The students had a wonderful morning of fun activities.

Harmony Day Celebration We also celebrated Harmony Day at a special assembly last Thursday afternoon. As everybody walked into the gym there was Afghan music playing and the Karen and Afghan students greeted in their own language. The choir sang “We are one” from the Lion King and the Karen Students sang a fishing song in Karen. Mrs Gloury displayed an Art work based on the book “Room on our Rock” which classes had read during the week. There was a special Video presentation from the EAL students and Michele spoke about Harmony Day. All Kangaroo Flat students wore Friendship bracelets that they had made in Art Sessions. It was a wonderful Harmony Day celebration.

Writing Extension Program This week Gumnut and Grevillea students have been working on brainstorming, planning and writing a persuasive text from start to finish. We have repeated the steps covered over the last 4 weeks with the focus being on students becoming more independent. Students chose between two writing topics: Spiders Vs Snakes – which is more dangerous? or Sporty Vs Clever – which is better? This week’s Writers of the Week are: Gumnut Neighbourhood: Ruby – Room 6 Ruby decided that snakes are more dangerous than spiders. During brainstorming Ruby wrote down 6 ideas. She then selected her 3 best arguments and ordered these ideas to Tighten the Tension. Ruby’s strongest argument was: snakes camouflage which makes them very dangerous! Grevillea Neighbourhood: Amelia – Room 13 Amelia decided that it is better to be clever than sporty. Her ideas during planning were very thoughtful and organised well to Tighten the Tension. Her Sizzling Start had many of us persuaded as she used a rhetorical question: Do you want to change the world and make it a better place? By studying, reading and trying new experiments you could cure cancer!

Well done to Ruby, Amelia and all students working hard in our writing groups!

Music News

This past week our senior students have danced up a storm and created their very own just dance videos which we will hopefully be using in our classes in the near future. Our 3/4 students have finished their performances on their bucket drums and given feedback on what they felt worked well with the bucket drumming and what they want to learn next. As I’m sure all of the 3/4 parents have heard our next instrument will be the recorder in term 2. Our lovely gumnuts have also been giving feedback after creating and playing their own rhythms using the bucket drums. As for our foundation students we have been look-ing at our 2 music notes that we know, quarter notes and eighth notes and using these to play many fun games in the music room. We also have a new Friday dance group who are off to a blazing start with their hip hop remix be sure to keep an eye out for our video at assembly in the coming weeks.
