This week, Year 10 student Isaiah McKenna received confirmation that

her application to the 2018 National Indigenous Summer School was

approved. The week long summer school will be held at the Australian

National University in Canberra and will commence in early Decem-

ber.

This unique and specialised camp not only engages students in univer-

sity life but also serves educational purposes with Isaiah participating

in the Humanities and Social Science seminars throughout the week.

As well as this, students on the camp will enjoy time at iconic locations

in Canberra such as the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, The National Muse-

um, AIATSIS, The National War Memorial and much more.

We wish Isaiah luck as she embarks on this new experience.

Drones are increasingly being used in many aspects of life including

photography. Our Year 11 Design Photography Class have been learning

how to use Drones safely and have just learned how to fly the drones out-

side. They are experimenting with keeping Drones in flight and composing

photos at the same time.

FOOTBALL CARNIVAL

On Friday of week 3, Students in years 7 to 9 competed in a football carnival against Port Hed-

land Secondary High School and Broome Senior High School. The day followed a round robin

type fixture, with St Mary’s College students playing one game against each high school, before

teaming up with Port Hedland to create a super team to play Broome Senior in the final. This

was a fantastic opportunity for the students to represent their schools and even saw several girls

from St Mary’s and Port Hedland, battling it out against the boys. The spirit of the day was amaz-

ing; each team showing tremendous sportsmanship and respect for each and the umpires.

Luckily, the day was a little bit cooler, which was a welcome relief to many. This is the second

year running that Port Hedland have made the long trip up to Broome for the carnival and due

to it being such a success, next year there is talk of trying to include Derby High School in the

day and expand upon what is already a favourite amongst the students.

Multi Sport Carnival

On Friday 26th October 35 Year 4 – 6 stu-

dents travelled to the BRAC to partici-

pate in the 2018 West Kimberley Multi-

sport Interschool Carnival. There were 2

Year 4 mixed soccer teams and 1 boys

and 1 girls Year 5/6 cricket team. All the

Broome schools as well as the Derby

state school were in attendance which

made for a fantastic atmosphere. The

aim of the Multisport Carnival is to en-

courage participation and promote en-

joyment of the sports in a fun and friend-

ly environment. Our students had a won-

derful time playing against the other schools and there were some great stories of amazing

goals and classic catches told on the bus on the way home! A big thank you to Mr Sonny and

Mr Din for coaching the teams on the day.

Remembrance Day: Centenary Of The Armistice and End Of WW1, Reflective Performance

Students have be preparing for the Remem-

brance Day commemoration reflective perfor-

mance. The performance will recognise that

from the small town of Broome over 250 men

enlisted, which was effectively 95% of the avail-

able population, and a record for any town in

Australia. Over sixty of these men did not return,

dying on active service, with another sixty being

so maimed during the progress of the war, that

they were medically discharged and invalided

back to Australia. The performance will highlight

the sacrifice and courage

of so many in the years of

war, the human cost of

those who died in the ser-

vice of their country, those

who survived with many

deeply scared by the ex-

perience, physically and

mentally, and those fami-

lies affected by loss. The

performance ground will

be surrounded with can-

dles labeled with the

names of those from

Broome who enlisted, and

a cross for each of the fall-

en.

The Remembrance Day Commemoration will commence at 10:00am Sunday the 11th of Novem-

ber at Bedford Park
