indian army begins peacekeeping operations in 1953

india has always contributed generously to Un demands for peacekeeping. Known for their equanimity and forbearance, Indian troops have proved popular everywhere. The first call came early enough, when India sent troops to Korea to form the Custodian Force (India), which functioned under the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission headed by Major General (later General) KS Thimayya, DSO in 1953-54. This was a delicate task, involving the repatriation of Prisoners of War, which was followed by a stint at Gaza to keep Israeli and Egyptian forces apart.

International Control commission was setup in 1954 to implement the ceasefire agreement between Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and France. India was the chairman of the commission with Poland and Canada as members. Indian Army also sent one infantry battalion for the control of these countries.

in order to enable the mS Branch to reach out to the environment in a faster timeframe, a SMS based Information Dissemination System has been operationalized on 14 Sep 2017. The application has been developed in-house by MS (Auto), It uses the secure niC portal of the government of india in an air gapped mode for sending out SmSs on registered mobile nos of officers.

Messages pertaining to posting, foreign assignment calls, nomination on course, receipt of CRs, status of complaints, PMR and Re-employment among other topics are being sent out. The system has facilitated better reach with officers in the environment, particularly officers posted in far flung areas, non military stations or in establishments, where Army Data Network is unavailable. In addition, this would also be of immense help to contact officers on move or on leave. Initial feedback from the environment has been positive and measures to further enhance the system will be undertaken.
