CRITERIA Project funds will be Dudley based, with the focus of work being carried out in Dudley Borough. Applications are welcome from statutory, voluntary and community groups and organisations. COUNSELLING & SUPPORT The Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Support Project undertook a range of activities to assess levels of anxiety and stress amongst individuals affected by these conditions to help them deal with their problem and adjust to the challenges of living with a long-term condition.

ANTI-BULLYING AWARENESS AND PREVENTION DVD & POSTERS Churches Housing Association of Dudley & District (CHADD) On-Route Foyer worked with young people and a semi-professional film-maker to develop and produce a DVD, leaflets and poster to combat bullying and raise awareness.

ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR PROJECT The DMBC Community Safety Team developed workshops for residents of the Castle and Priory/St Thomas’s wards. The aim was to educate them about mental health/wellbeing and anti-social behaviour and highlight and identify when and how ASB and mental health are linked. The workshops looked at common issues surrounding this and how to report/access support when needed, focusing on raising awareness and reducing stigma.

2013 - ROUND 17 LET’S PLAY Home-Start Dudley works with vulnerable families with children under 5; they trained volunteers in play techniques and provided them with a toolkit of practical activities to then engage and teach the children and parents, thus cascading and developing life skills.

KALA AUR KALANK Shree Krishna Asian Elderly Day Care Centre worked with members of the Hindu-Gujarati community to reduce stigma around mental health and to increase awareness of mental health problems and where to get support. Using the medium of art they developed and produced pocket sized information resources in Gujarati.

BREAD2SHARE Bread2Share CIC ran a project to promote and develop the potential of creative activity to build community and individual wellbeing. Bread2share provided bread making workshops, focusing on community, nourishment and wellbeing through the nature of group work and the sensory stimulus of a material based creative activity. ` 2014 - ROUND 18 ROOTS IN RHYTHM The New Testament Welfare Association developed it’s well received and popular Djembe drumming workshops by increasing classes and accessibility to the community. Djembe translates into ‘Everyone gather together in peace’. From a cultural perspective this is a very good activity. Being from the Caribbean, participants felt connected to the West African origins of Djembe drumming and learned some of the history of the drum, including the idea of ‘talking drums’. Four six-weekly sessions were organised each lasting 2 hours in the church hall that is connected to the day centre.

THE BEAUTY WITHIN The Diya Project worked with Asian girls aged 12-17, providing them with a culturally acceptable environment and engaging them in nail art and henna design workshops as well as raising their awareness about mental wellbeing messages. They produced bookmarks using the images they had developed through the workshops and added key wellbeing messages on them, which were then shared with their family, friends and wider peer group.

HEALTH AWARENESS EVENTS JUNE-SEPT 2015

Give… Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and will create connections with the people around you.

CARERS WEEK Carers UK (and partner agencies)

8th-14th June 2015

020 7378 4955 www.carersweek.org Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. This year we're focusing on building Carer Friendly Communities. Communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own. Carers Week is brought to life by the individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

Keep learning… Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident, as well as being fun to do.

We hope you will join us in celebrating adult learning and be inspired to take part. Here are just some of the activities we have planned:

• National and regional awards ceremonies • Parliamentary reception • ‘Have a go’ learning taster events • Festival of Learning

In 2014, more than 3000 ‘have a go’ activities were held by providers of all shapes and sizes. The 2015 Festival of Learning takes place in May and June and incorporates thousands of events across the country.

Be active… Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy; one that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

BIKE WEEK 13th-21st June 2015

0845 680 5005 www.bikeweek.org.uk Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. Demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling, the week aims to get people to give cycling a go all over the UK, whether this be for fun, as a means of getting around to work or school, the local shops or just to visit friends. The 2015 event will take place 13th-21st June but events still take place through until September and beyond! This year’s Bike Week has a special focus and will encourage people to use their bikes to cycle to work. Many people will use the events to ride and take part in ‘buddy’ rides with colleagues, scope out the easiest route to their place of work or take part in work place challenges. As the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK, Bike Week encourages over half a million people to join in events, rethink their everyday journeys and switch to cycling as the most convenient way to get around. There are hundreds of events planned for 2015.

Take notice… Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are on a train, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

NATIONAL MEN’S HEALTH WEEK Men’s Health Forum 11th–21st June 2015

0207 922 7908 [email protected] www.menshealthforum.org.uk Men’s Health Week 2015 is from the 15th to 21st June and will focus on healthy living for men. The Men's Health Forum leads Men's Health Week in England and Wales. Men's Health Week 2015 focuses on healthy living challenging men to:

• Look after their relationships and wellbeing

• Don't smoke

• Drink sensibly

• Be active

• Watch their weight

• Turn up to their NHS Health Check

Men are less likely to lead a healthy lifestyle. They are more likely to smoke, drink alcohol to hazardous levels and be overweight or obese. These lifestyles can lead into serious diseases such as cancer, heart diseases and stokes, the risk of which can be reduced by leading a healthy lifestyle. Our Men's Health Manifesto challenges men and health providers on these issues. Anyone can take part in Men's Health Week, especially local organisations, public health teams, NHS and employers. Sign up for Men's Health Week 2015 news and information and we will help you get involved in the week. We will send you extra newsletters with updates on the week and details of how to get resources as soon as they are available.

` THE FACTS OF SUMMER

DID YOU KNOW?

The first day of summer is called the summer solstice which is Latin for sun stand still. Throughout the day, the sun is higher in the sky and its rays beam on the Earth at a more direct angle. This is what causes the hotter temperatures associated with summer.

The term ‘The Dog Days of summer’ is one that is often heard, but the real "dog days" refers to the weeks between 3rd July and 11th August. The days are named after the Dog Star (Sirius) in the constellation of Canis Major.

The ancient Romans and Greeks blamed Sirius for the extreme temperatures, drought, sickness, and discomfort that came in late summer.

The Eiffel Tower in Paris grows by more than six inches in summer due to the expansion of the iron on hot days.

The month of July is the most popular month for ice cream due to the higher temperatures.

Watermelon is the summer's favourite vegetable. It is part of the cucumber, pumpkin, and squash family and is 92% water.

The perfect temperature for pools in

the summer is 75° Fahrenheit is the perfect. Any temperature over 90° Fahrenheit is too hot and any temperature under 70° Fahrenheit too cold.

The last day of summer is 20th September which means the first day of autumn is 21st September.

Every four years, the Summer Olympics take place. They were held for the first time in Greece more than two thousand years ago.

Mosquitoes, summer's pest, have been around for more than 30 million years.

Summers spent throwing a Frisbee back and forth owe their game to a pie maker named Mr Frisbee.

The first bathing suit for women was created in the 1800s. It was long sleeved with woollen bloomers.

June is named for the Roman goddess Juno (Hera).

Romans began the summer wedding tradition, choosing June for Juno's blessing. This is a tradition that still continues today.

August is the busiest month for travel and tourism.

Both tornadoes and thunderstorms occur more often during the summer.

Rainfall is less in summer than other times of year and droughts may seem more severe in summer time.

NEED TO KNOW GROUP MILITARY LIFE EXPERIENCE SOCIAL GROUP

Introducing the Need to Know group - a friendly social group for people who share a connection with military life experience. Those who have served in the forces often have a great of skills and energy to offer. Their training and their conditioning sets them apart in many ways from others in civilian life. We have found that many who have served have become isolated from others as they have moved back into civilian life. In response to this, we're piloting a social group for those with a military connection - the Need to Know Group. The Need to Know Group, or NTKG for short, is an open group, independent of any agencies or organisations and is also free of quotas, targets and pressures to do anything apart from attending and being there. The location we have chosen offers some quiet corners as well as space for banter. It offers free tea and coffee along with a fully accessible location on one level. We are very grateful to a local community group for their goodwill in making this possible. The people who attend will help shape the group. We're aiming to develop a profile of trusted contacts that people have found helpful that could also help others. We're letting people know the precise location on a need to know basis, so if you think you'd benefit from breaking out of your shell, being with others who think the same, share experiences behind and in front of the wire - then get in touch with us. Call or text Pete on 07858 249576, leave a message if we cannot take your call immediately and we'll get back to you. You can also reach us from here via email through The NTKG meets every Friday (except Good Friday), from 1230 hours onwards in Oldbury town centre (B69). The location is a 5 minute walk from local buses. Sandwell and Dudley rail station is a 10 minute yomp away and we are 5 minutes away by road from junction 2 of the M5. We regret we can't cover travel expenses, but we can provide the biscuits

NEWSRELEASENEWSRELEASENEWSRELEASENEWSRELEASENEWSRELEASENEWSRELEASE

Age Alliance set to run loneliness and isolation survey With the theme for 2015’s Older People’s Day on 1st October set as ‘loneliness and isolation’. Dudley’s Age Alliance is carrying out research around the topic in the run up to the day. An informal survey will be conducted across the five towns of Dudley Borough by the Age Alliance. The survey aims to highlight the issues and effects of loneliness on older people, as well as finding out about people’s experiences in Dudley. Age Alliance will be setting up various road shows in locations across Dudley Borough to encourage a widespread participation in the survey. The survey will also promote and support inter-generational activity as health and social care students from Dudley College will participate at one of the road shows. The road shows will be held as follows: 25th June 2015 – Cornbow Centre, Halesowen 3rd July 2015 – Churchill Precinct, Dudley 10th July 2015 – Co-op Food Store, Sedgley 16th July 2015 – Merry Hill Centre, Brierley Hill 23rd July 2015 – Rye Market, Stourbridge

The online issue of the survey can be found and completed here: www.survey.monkey.com/s/Age_Alliance

A paper survey will also be issued at the road shows with the outcomes and results being used in a conference at Brierley Hill Civic Centre on 1st October 2015. Councillor Rachel Harris, cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “It is really important for us to understand the effects of loneliness and isolation on older people, as we all know someone who could be affected by either. “The survey, which is hoped to have widespread participation in Dudley, can make a great difference to the way the council approach the topics. We are urging as many people as possible to take part.” Keith Sherman, Vice Chair of Age Alliance said: “We want to know exactly how people feel towards the topics of loneliness and isolation as they are two big factors that impact older people’s health. “We are hoping that there is both a large amount of responses and intergenerational activity to promote an important issue.”
