Refurbishment of play area equipment at recreation parks
Ferryhill Town Council has recently commenced
a programme of refur-bishment of its children’s
The refurbishment of the children’s play equipment in the park at Mainsforth Sports Complex is the first of a programme of refurbishment across the town’s parks.
The Ferryhill E-Café has announced that, thanks to funding secured from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities Fund, the centre will now be opening four nights a week instead of only three. Funding was secured in April to cover the cost of employing a Youth Co-ordi-nator to run four sessions a week at the Ferryhill based youth centre. Accordingly, as from Wednesday 6th June the E-Café will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for the younger age group (8–13 years) between 5.00pm and 6.30pm and for the older age group (13-19 years) from 6.45pm
to 8.15pm.The E-Café, which was originally developed in response to a community appraisal carried out in Ferryhill in 2001, and which identified a strong need for a youth facility in the town, provides young people with somewhere to go on an evening and the opportunity to participate in activities which they would otherwise not be presented with. For more information about the E-Café or to become a member, contact either Ferryhill Town Council or Pam Rowland, Youth Co-ordinator at the E-Café on 01740 652157 or 07932 805223.
New funding means E-café opens longer
This week we have a reduced newspaper as the Chapter staff took the op-portunity to join readers in enjoying the bank holiday.
Normal service will resume next week. Don’t forget to send your snaps and stories of the Jubilee celebrations by noon on Monday 11th.

play equipment with Mainsforth Sports Complex being the first park to be completed. The King George V Playing Fields and Surtees Doorstep Green are due for refurbishment in the next few months.Councillor Pauline Crathorne who is the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Mainsforth Sports Complex said: “This year the Town Council is refur-bishing play equipment in all of its parks. “It is the Town Council’s policy to continually improve its recreation facilities making them as attractive as possible for local residents and visitors to the area. “The Town Council continues to source funding from external providers not only to improve or replace play equipment but also for other improvements in the town”.

1960: the Queen visits Chilton
Bob Flook kindly sent us this photograph of Her Majesty passing through Chilton in 1960.“The photo was taken by my wife Jean, who had never taken a photo before, so I believe that she did very well under the circumstances,” said Bob. “I thought it may bring back memories to some of the older readers,” he said.If any readers have attended a Jubilee Party and would like to send us your stories and pho-tographs, we will include as many as possible in next week’s issue of The Chapter. Email your submissions to [email protected], call in or post to our office (see address, front page) or drop them off at the library. The deadline is noon on Monday, 11th June.
Ferryhill Town Council has organised for ‘Animal Story’ to visit Ferryhill Library on Thursday 7th June, between 2pm and 3pm. The key to tackling anti-social behaviourPeople living in Ferryhill have been handed the keys to new security gates which have been installed to help tackle antisocial behaviour. Homes and communities organisation, livin, led the project in Brancepeth Road after receiving complaints of antisocial behaviour from residents living in the area. In partnership with the police, repairs and main-tenance partner Mears and the Local Multi-agency Problem Solving Group (LMAPS) over £8,000 was secured to fund the instil-lation of the new security fencing and gates and replace broken-down fencing to the rear of the shopping parade. Neil Hobson, support and intervention team leader, for livin, said: “People were gathering on a night at the rear of the shopping parade causing disturbanc-es to residents. “After receiving a series of complaints we contacted the police and discovered it was an antisocial behaviour hotspot and took immediate action to tackle the problem.
“The fencing and gates have been erected around the whole of the rear of the shops and will provide security to the shops and safety for residents living above.” Beverly Harvey, resident, said: “We’re just like any
other family we want a quiet, peaceful life. We’ve seen a huge improvement since the fence went up, people are no longer gathering next to the flats. It used to be quite intimidating leaving your front door but now it’s much better.”
Neil Hobson, Support and Intervention Team Leader for livin, handing the keys to the gate to residents, Beverly Harvey and Chris Young, supported maintenance partner, Mears, and the Local Multi-agency Problem Solving Group.
