Tas k 1c: anal sis of Dizzee Ras cal dou ble a e s read in NME Basic layout: on this double page spread they have chosen to separate the two pages so that there is just an image on the left and the article on the right, with different graphic backgrounds on each. There is some use of rule of thirds on the pages, as there is text on the right the thirds are more obviously horizontal, but on the left because there is the artist depicted it’s using the vertical lines more heavily. This makes the pages appealing to the eye. Also in the top right hand corner there is the word ‘Dizzee’ that is acting as a page number, in that the magazine is organized by page number but they also actively link pages to artists, which may be what they are doing here. Left image: there is a medium long shot of this copies main musician Dizzee Rascal. He is shown wearing a red jacket which is branding towards the NME masthead, which is red. It also has connotations of rebellion and then therefore the rock genre, that NME is also associated with. Secondly, he is shown in front of a wall of graffiti style art and is holding a can of spray paint, this relates to the title of the article on the right and will show his fans that he is still down to earth and in touch with his roots, this will be a positive image for his old fans and possible new ones. Also those that enjoy the rap and MC genre stereotypically enjoy thins form of art so again will associate with him. Then this may change the views of readers who are more exclusively fans of rock. This creates synergy between NME expanding their genre and readership, and Dizzee Rascal who may now gain new fans and sell more music. Finally a reason for them setting up the pages, so that his image is exclusively on the left, could be so it’s available as a poster if the reader desires to rip it out. This also will appeal to teenage readers who stereotypically stick posters and images on their bedroom walls. Right side: This side has the main text on and some images in the bottom third of the page. The heading is a play on word as the expression is usually ‘from rags to riches’, so implies that he has built up his name and gained success where he formerly had nothing. But their use of ‘tags’ gives connotations that he is from the ‘streets’ where a lot of graffiti it done a nd links to the image to the left, all giving us an idea that the article will be about his past and rise to success, while still allowing the readers to associate with him. The font is black and bold but also is off center again giving connotation of rebellion. There is then a sub heading describing more of the articles content, and where they have put Dizzee Rascal’s name in bold to help readers be certain of what their reading. The images at the bottom are of a speaker/boom box and some empty beer bottles. This could be reference to parties where he could MC and be a major part of his past, but the alcohol could also have negative connotations but may help show how he’s come out the other side of a bad situation. Colour Scheme: On the left there is a lot of colouring used such as red, which links to the NME masthead. The use of green, pink and yellow make it look more exiting and fun which is a positive image and will give connotations towards his upbeat genre and who he may be as a person. Having these could entice readers to find out more about him and read on. But the base background colour is white, like on the right linking them. Also the beer bottles are green and there is a yellow sticker on the speaker of the bottom right page images, again liking the two together.
