Residency program at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Calif., her first year out of NIU. She worked on their med/surgoncology floor. She then transitioned over to a nurse residency fellowship program specialty in the operating room at Saint Johns Medical Center in Santa Monica, Calif. “I am grateful for going through NIU's nursing program and earning my baccalaureate degree in science. Good things come from NIU!”

Meg Warren (’15) is now in the fifth semester of the FNP BSN-DNP program at the University of Michigan. She will soon begin her clinical in Detroit at Community Health and Social Services, Inc., a challenging position, but one she is looking forward to. Going from a BS to a DNP is big step, but one Meg says she is prepared for. “Some of the most influential information I learned at NIU was the real-life experiences the faculty shared.”

Ready for that next audacious goal?

NIU is accepting applications for its new DNP program; classes start in fall 2017.

Once again this summer, the School of Nursing will be offering a study abroad opportunity to Ireland to explore their health care services. Students will learn about the history of Ireland’s health care system and the variety of Ireland’s health services, including the specialties of nursing, public health and health studies. There will also be plenty of cultural experiences. This opportunity is open to all majors, so grab a friend and contact the NIU Study Abroad Office ([email protected]) or Drs. Jeanette Rossetti ([email protected]) and Kathleen Musker ([email protected]).

The NIU School of Nursing would like to welcome

the following new instructors for the Spring 2017

semester

Dr. Manju Daniel and

Dr. Maryann Abendroth

A manuscript submitted by Dr. Manju Daniel and Dr. Maryann Abendroth was accepted for publication in the Western Journal of Nursing Research. The article is titled “Barriers and Motives to Physical Activity in South Asian Indian Immigrant Women”.

A third contributing author to the article is Dr. Judith A. Erlen of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.

Chantal Manhart is no stranger to the NIU nursing program, having served as a preceptor to many of our graduate students. She practices locally at Prairie Point Obstetrics and Gynocology in Sycamore. She earned her BSN from Grand View College in Des Moines, IA and her MSN and FNP from Graceland University. She will be teaching in the graduate program. Welcome to the team, Chantal

Chantal Manhart

Brian Johnson will be teaching an online course in our undergraduate program this spring. He has extensive emergency department experience and is a graduate of KishwaukeeCollege (ADN), Olivet Nazarene (BSN), Northern Illinois University (MSN, FNP-BC), and Chamberlain School of Nursing (DNP). Welcome aboard, Brian.

Dr. Brian Johnson

Randa Melms will be teaching a clinical course for us this spring. She graduated from NIU in 2012 with her BS in nursing and served as a nurse in the US Army from 2012-2016. 17The School of Nursing would like to

thank all preceptors who mentored a nursing student this past semester. We hope you enjoyed the “winter package” thank you gift of an NIU stocking cap and mug.

In addition to contributing to the development of the next generation of advanced practice nurses, your efforts help to steward our profession. What you do is important to our students, NIU and the nursing profession!

Interested in being a preceptor yourself? We’re looking for FNPs and MDs in a wide range of specialty areas. Preceptors also get access to the NIU library system, a discount on Lexicomp and discounted rates for continuing education sessions at NIU. For more information, contact our Graduate Internship Coordinator at (815) 753-2163.

In Memory

NIU School of Nursing instructor, Lynda Shiro was shocked to learn, just days after speaking with her, that her friend and NIU alumna, Jackie Bremer (’88), was killed in a car accident. In memory of Jackie, Lynda has donated a new Keurig coffee machine for the student lounge. “We started out school in Montgomery Hall, and then finished in the "new" building. The student lounge was a nice place for students to get together (as you know), but we always joked about having "snacks". I know she and her husband Wally (who was a chef), donated to the nursing school in the past.”

6The School of Nursing welcomes your donations. Please go to niufoundation.org to donate online or contact Anthony D’Andrea at [email protected] or (815) 753-1390.

Students, if you enjoy a cup of coffee in your newly renovated lounge, give a tip of the cup in honor of Jackie Bremer.
