On Sunday May 22, 2016 we began strategic planning process with Rev. Enrique Gonzalez. It was a
great meeting with a lot of laughter, good questions, and wonderful sharing from all of the 42 people in
attendance. Thank you to everyone who able to attend and participate in this important step for our
church. I want to share some highlights from the meeting and what you can expect next.
We started the meeting with Enrique with a wonderful potluck, with a lot of delicious food and wonderful
fellowship. When we got to work everyone was ready to share, because it did not take Enrique long to
fill up two big sheets of paper with things that people were celebrating in the life of our church. Enrique
called this our “Wall of Wonder” and it got the meeting going on a very positive note. We also impressed
Enrique, he hopes to share our Wall of Wonder on the conference website (wisconsinumc.org). I will let
you all know when he does.
It was also amazing to see all the wonderful ideas Enrique helped us to come up with about what we
would like to see in the coming years here. We were encourage to look towards the future of our church,
not just the immediate future but the long-term future. Helping us to realize that the work we invest in
the church today is not for us; but for those who will come after us. With this to inspire us our vision for
our church was literally written on the wall.
Enrique had cool sticky blue sheet on the wall that we put all of our ideas onto so we could see them.
Then he helped us to organize them as a community. It is from this collaborative work that our practical
vision for our church will become clear. It really was exciting to hear and see all the amazing ideas come
that everyone was sharing come together in a meaningful way. At the end of the meeting Enrique and I
gathered all of the ideas that were put on the wall together and he and his team will compile them and
send them to us as a report.
So what comes next? A few things. When I get the report from Enrique, it will immediately be shared
with you in a few ways. We will send it to via email and regular mail and we will post it on line and in
the church. This information is for everyone to see because it came from you, the congregation. Howev-
er, this is only the first step in the process. We will have another gathering on Sunday July 10, 2016 after
worship, lunch will be provided, in which we will identify all the things that are keeping us for accom-
plishing the vision we just created.
This step of identifying the underlying contradictions is probably the most important step for our church.
So it is vitally important for you to be a part of it as well, even if you were not at the first meeting. So
put July 10th on your calendars now! You also can be preparing yourself in the meantime. Read and re-
flect on the vision report when you get in the next few days, ask questions but most of all pray. Pray
that the exciting vision that God is giving us will set your heart on fire, pray that we will see clearly how
to live this vision out, and pray that God will give us all the grace strength to overcome all that might
hold us back.
Thank you all!

Outreach: Reaching out beyond ourselves and our
church in love
A huge thank you goes out to those of you who volunteered your time and/or provided food to make the Community Table at St. Matthias Church a success on May 17. We served 83 guests, plus staff and volunteers, with a potluck dinner. Many compliments were received on the delicious array of food and desserts! Our church is the lead host for this event three times a year, with support from Faith Evangelical Free and Northwoods Unitarian churches. Both churches were wonderful in turning out for this event. It was a delightful evening of food and fellowship.
Join us again in September!
Habitat for Humanity Northwoods has partnered with the Building Trades class at Rhinelander HS for its 2016 build. The site is yet to be determined in the Rhinelander school district. Volunteers may call the office at (715)356-7203 for more information, or check out their website at
habitatforhumanitynorthwoodswi.org.
“Brush With Kindness” is a Habitat outreach program designed to assist the elderly with painting and home maintenance; volunteers are always needed. Call (715)356-7203 (office hours are 9:30-1:30 on Monday and Wednesday, or leave a message

TOGETHER, WE SPREAD THE GOSPEL OF PEACE AND ENCOURAGE COOPERATION LOCALLY, IN THE
UNITED STATES AND GLOBALLY.
Peace With Justice Sunday is June 5, 2016
In Arizona border towns, communities facing social challenges are dramati-
cally divided. In Liberian villages, citizens’ human rights are being violated.
In local U.S. communities, women and girls are being bought and sold
against their will.
Moved by Christ’s love to pursue reconciliation and peace, honoring the dig-
nity of every individual made in God’s image, The United Methodist Church
is unwilling to turn a blind eye to injustice.
Although you, and possibly even your congregation, may lack the resources alone to effect change in a broken
world, your giving is vital for the UMC to continue its global ministries of reconciliation. Because of the Peace
with Justice Sunday offering, the people of The United Methodist Church are able to make a differ-
ence together by sowing seeds—and yielding fruit!—of peace.
Equipping The United Methodist Church to Do Justice in Jesus’ Name
When you give on Peace with Justice Sunday, your gift makes possible our critical kingdom work in the world.
Because you give:
Methodists spearhead a peace ministry uniting Arizona border communities
United Methodists in Liberia are being equipped to implement the denomination’s Social Principles to address
social-justice issue
Pennsylvania students are educating their community about sex-trafficking at home and abroad
These initiatives, and hundreds of other ones, are possible because you give.
Your Giving Makes Possible the Proclamation of Christ’s Peace
Will you continue to support Peace with Justice Sunday? Will you empower local Christians—in Pennsylvania
and Arizona and Liberia—to build the kingdom of peace that Jesus ushered in?
In Jesus’ inaugural address, standing in his home synagogue in Nazareth, he detailed his game plan,
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent
me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to
proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)
Through your giving good news is proclaimed to—and experienced by—the poor.
Thanks be to God!

Stephen Ministry at UMCOP
The following is an excerpt from a true conversation between a Ste-
phen Ministries staff member from St. Louis, and a care receiver, Me-
gan, who wanted to share her story.
Staff Member: What led you to receive the care of a Stephen
Minister?
Megan: It all began soon after I moved to [a new city] to live near my family. I had just ended an
eight-year relationship and was depending on them to be my support system. But a few months after
I arrived, they unexpectedly had to move away—so I felt very, very alone. Not long after they
moved, my grandfather passed away. It was one of the hardest times of my life
I knew I needed to talk to someone, but I hadn’t lived in the city long enough to develop close, com-
fortable friendships that I could depend on. But my new church had Stephen Ministry. When I found
out what Stephen Ministry was, I talked to my pastor about getting a Stephen Minister.
What was it like to meet with your Stephen Minister?
We met weekly. Sometimes she’d come to my house and we’d sit and talk, and other times we’d go
walking together. During our visits, she just let me talk while she listened. As I was talking through
things, I realized that it was helping me to make sense of everything that had happened and how I
was feeling. She accepted my feelings, including the ones that seemed risky to share— and that was
really helpful.
I actually didn’t need advice from her—I needed acceptance and affirmation. I had a lot of loneli-
ness, a lot of hurts, a lot of uncertainty inside. I needed to be validated and not put down. My Ste-
phen Minister did a wonderful job of creating a warm, caring space for me to process my emotions
and work through my issues.
Could you tell me about a caring visit that stands out for you?
Definitely. It was a few months into our relationship, and I’d begun to trust my Stephen Minister
with some of my most difficult issues. As we were walking around a track, with the wind blowing
in my face, I suddenly realized that she was literally walking right beside me as I journeyed through
my pain. (Continued Page 6…)

I’d been struggling with some spiritual wounds that were pretty intense and needed healing— things
I didn’t want to share with family and friends. But on that visit, as my Stephen Minister walked next
to me, I felt safe and comfortable. So I shared my deepest hurts with her—some really painful things
that I feared she might judge me for and that made me wonder if God could possibly love me.
After I told her those things, I was really nervous and dreading her response. I was worried that she
would think I was an awful person. But instead, she put her arm around me and said, “I’m sorry you
had to go through that.” And that was a turning point for me. To go from fear of judgement to a
positive affirmation of care, empathy—and even sorrow for what I’d been through—it was so
meaningful. That’s when I began to feel God’s love again.

Relay for Life
Our United Methodist Church of the Pines Relay Team has worked very hard the last three years
to raise money that goes directly back into the Wisconsin community. The money raised helps
those patients that are in their fight against cancer. It helps to maintain the Hope Lodge in
Marshfield that houses patients and their families. Please watch the bulletin board in the Pine
Room to read about Relay. Please visit the Relay table in the Ministry Center to purchase lumi-
naria bags or solar lights to remember a loved one, to honor someone who is in the fight or who
is a survivor or to honor the all important caregiver. Relay for Life will be July 29th. Our kickoff
at Church will be June 12th.

Children are important…
We offer children the gifts of love, acceptance, and participation. Children learn about the love of God in our LAMBS and King’s Kids programs. Children are invited to participate in Time for Children during worship, and older kids can serve in worship.
So are youth…
Our youth participate in worship in youth group. Students are asked to serve as ushers, liturgists, and with special music. 6th-8th grade students are mentored in our G.R.O.W. Confirmation program, and we plan special events and a summer mission trip.
And adults…
We offer weekly Bible studies, small group meetings, fellowship events, and opportunities for Outreach. No matter your season of life, there is a way for you to encounter God at UMCOP.
Live Christ’s Love NOW.!
We grow in our relationships with God and one another. We reach out beyond ourselves and our church to love others. We live lives that glorify God, every day. Together, we are Living Christ's Love NOW!
