SPECIAL EDITION

Page 2: NIST e-NEWS(Vol 77, May 15, 2011) Special Edtion

I am delighted that the editors of NIST E-news are publishing a special

edition covering the high points of 2010-11. Our greatest accomplishments

this year has been the fantastic progress of research and development in

NIST. The undergraduate research assistantship program is progressing well

and so are the sponsored projects of our faculty members. More than 35 referred

journal publications in this year are a satisfactory achievement. Similarly

“innovation” has been the buzz with students and faculty working jointly in

incubating new companies on the campus.

I was recently asked what an aspiring student should look for while choosing

a college for a career. My answer is “First: look at the Institute’s Promoters,

their Education, Vision, Plans, Second: Faculty, their qualifications, research,

grants, achievements, Third: Placement Track Record especially the quality

of Placements, Fourth: Student Academic Performance Track Record,

Student Activities, Sports & Extra-Curricular, Fifth: Infrastructure,

Ambience & Discipline, and Finally, Choose the Best College - Branch is

immaterial.

I want all top rankers of AIEEE and Orissa JEE to seriously consider NIST as

their choice for an engineering or management career. As we have promised,

we shall continue to pursue our goal of providing the students the highest in

quality education. As the saying goes the finest steel goes through the hottest

furnace, so shall be NIST – the hottest furnace of education.

With Best Wishes,

The finest steel goes

through the hottest

furnace, so shall be

NIST – the hottest

furnace of education.

The campus recruitment drive for the graduating batch of 2011 conducted in the month

of January was one of the most successful ones at NIST. The companies that visited

the campus were Cap Gemini, Infosys Technologies, HCL Technologies, Mahindra

Satyam, Wipro Technologies, Wipro VLSI, Acumen Consultancy Services, Sankalp

Semiconductor, TVS Motor Company, Gennum Technologies, L&T Integrated Engineering

Services, Infotech Enterprises, Mphasis. The total B.Tech. and MCA placement till date is

557. In addition, 90 job offers to NIST Business School students also sets a benchmark placement record.

Congratulations to all those who have been selected. Continue to keep your focus in the academics as this area is

equally important. Campus recruitment was not as stringent as it used to be for the previous batches because the

requirements are high and the companies are in a mood to hire as many candidates as possible. Therefore the job

market is bright with many opportunities. If the trend continues in the same way, the next batch also will be lucky!

However, there can be no easy approach for the preparations for the selection process for these companies. All the

students must put in the maximum efforts for the pre placement training especially in the area of verbal skills and

communication skills. At NIST there are lots of opportunities to develop and hone talents and personalities in

different ways. Instead of wasting time students must utilize it to the fullest and make ‘Learning’ – a continuous

process. At regular intervals they must evaluate themselves – progress towards your goals, both short and long

term. Inviting criticism from friends, teachers and parents would help them to trace their own drawbacks. Analyzing

their own strengths and weaknesses would help them to improve further. Developing leadership skills and most

importantly, improving communication skills is always paramount. Communication skills are very important for

career advancement and professional achievements.

The National Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) was established in the year 1996 by a group of academicians

educated in the top Institutes of India & abroad with the avowed mission to “create engineering minds capable of mastering

the global challenges of tomorrow’s technology”. The Institute is approved by the AICTE (under MHRD, Govt of India) and

is affiliated to Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Odisha. The Chairman of the Institute, Shri Surendra

Mudali had a dream to build a world class institution in his home state of Odisha, more specifically in an educationally

challenged location of South Orissa. In the year 1996, NIST was the first Engineering College of the entire South Odisha.

Today NIST is a leading Institute within top 100 engineering colleges of India and a leading icon in technical education in

Eastern India. The founder Director, Prof Sangram Mudali is B.Tech from IIT Kanpur (1985) & MS from Univ. of Houston,

USA (1987). He & his wife Mrs. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director (B.Tech-Osmania University, MS-NJIT, USA) left

USA to pioneer a world class institute in their home state of Odisha. Within a short span of 14 years, it has produced 4

BOYSCAST faculty scholars who have been funded by Government of India to pursue postgraduate research in the top

institutes in USA and Germany. NIST has produced 3 FullBright Scholars. Three of its faculty has won the Samant

Chandrasekhar Young Scientist Award given by the Government of Orissa. Three faculties have been awarded the

URSI Young Scientist Award. Currently 2 AICTE funded Emeritus Professors are working in NIST. More than 20 Post

doctorate scholarships have been awarded to the Institute faculty. The faculties of the Institute are alumni of IIT’s, IISc,

ISI, Jadavpur Univ., etc. The faculties of the Institute have published more than 150 journal papers in refereed journals

and are authors of about 15 books published by reputed publishing houses. The Institute also has its own publishing

house “NIST Press”. The Institute has received a number of grants, projects, special funding, travel funding, SDPs, FIST

grant, scholarships, etc., from the DST, CSIR, AICTE, IT companies, etc. In the year 2010-11, NIST has received about

Rs. 50 Lacs funding from AICTE, DST, CSIR. TIFAC (Govt. of India), IBM and CADENCE have already established

To drench NIST in the colors of competitiveness,

fun and frolic, WAVES 2010, the intra collegiate

fest of our college, was organized on the 18th

and 19th of March 2011. This much awaited fest was

inaugurated by Ms. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director

along with Prof. Sangram Mudali, Director, Dr. Arun

Kumar Padhy, Course Coordinator, B. Tech. program.

The celebrations started with a series of sports events

which included Basketball matches, volleyball match

(student vs. Faculty), swimming, lawn tennis etc. The

evening was splashed with the spirit of enjoyment as

students took to the stage showcasing their varied talents

in the field of music, dance and acting. Our very own

band NMS brought the audience to their feet as they

belted out one mellifluous number after another. The

second morning was dedicated to various stage events

like antakshari, dumb charades, Quiz and the “Faculty

student event “organized by club Innova. However, off

the stage was not less interesting. The Dog Show was

no way less thrilling and exhilarating than any other

shows. The stunts shown by the rarest of breeds of dogs

with the help of the trainers were really breath stopping.

The series of events provided another liberal dose of

fun to the proceedings as both the students and the

faculties came together to make the events a success.

The evening of the 19th commenced with the felicitation

of the toppers for the 2010 pass out batch with Gold

and Silver medals been awarded to them. This was

followed by several performances by students

showcasing the plethora of talent that is hidden inside

all NISTians. From breathtaking dance moves to soulful

renditions to hilarious mimicries and amazing acting

skills, the student community took the stage by storm.

However the show stopper like any other year was

the performance by our faculty members. This time our

faculty members in their own inimitable style did

something different from the usual by staging a skit

revolving around the theme of life at NIST. The

wonderful play won the hearts of all present and the

applause just did not stop. The celebrations were

capped by a fashion show by the students titled “Phases

of Life” which put on display the various facets, emotions

and stages that life takes an individual through. The

celebrations came to an end with the singing of the

national anthem.
