readers as it highlights the events, achievements, happenings of the entire year

2009 – 10 in a nutshell to give a glance of the feats that the institute has

achieved over a year. The magazine through its endeavour in projecting the

true picture of the Institute has successfully come to the culmination of another

academic year. We wait for the arrival of the fresh batch of students of 2010

to give campus journalism a new fillip and write the saga of greater success.

Amrut Phalguni Mohanty Dipti Ranjan Lenka

From the Director’s Desk

This special edition of NIST E-news is a noteworthy attempt to provide an achievement

balance sheet of the Institute for the academic year 2009-10. The herculean efforts of the

faculty and students were well rewarded this year with the establishment of the much

deserved TIFAC CORE in the area of 3G/4G Communications Technology in NIST campus

by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India and Industry partners with a

grant of Rs. 9.5 Crore. This is the 2nd TIFAC CORE in the entire Eastern India and NIST

is justifiably proud of its eminence which has made it possible.

It is a great pleasure to welcome the new Batch of 2010 to a temple of modern learning called NIST. The founder

of NIST, Shri Surendra Mudali had a dream and a vision to transform NIST into a mecca of technical and

professional education and journey has well begun. NIST is one of the leading top institutes of the country within

the top 100. The 150 faculty members of the Institute comprising of over 40 core faculty from the IITs, IISc and

top universities of the world, are determined to provide the best undergraduate and graduate education. What

sets NIST completely apart is its singular determination to be a frontline leader in teaching and research competing

with the IITs and NITs for this honor. Students of NIST stand out in start contrast as they are the most disciplined,

hard working, ethical, multi-skill, highly motivated, ambitious professionals ever produced in India. Students are

exposed to a cosmopolitan, pan-Indian atmosphere with students of sixteen states pursuing their studies in the

campus. Faculty are hired from the best institutes of India and abroad. This is not mere drum beating but is

vouched by thousands of our alumni and industry partners from all over the world. We welcome the most

talented students to challenge our faculty and together we discover a new frontier in our march towards Excellence.

To all the aspiring students my promise is simple: NIST values Excellence and will continue to provide an ambience

to excel. NIST has maintained the leadership in setting the benchmarks in academics, research and consultancy

and will continue to do so in the years to come.

We welcome you to NIST - a home away from home.

National Mountain Biking Expedition-2009Himachal has been referred to as the land of Gods and Goddesses and snow-clad mountains, perennial streams

with crystal clear water. Its beautiful valleys present extensive forests and picturesque meadows dotted with a

variety of flora and fauna which beckon the young adventure lovers to come and experience the serene and calm

atmosphere of all pervading nature. ‘Jolori Pass’ located at height of 10,500 ft provides an awesome and

breathtaking view. It is famous for beauty of colour-

birds, wildness of wild life, botanical species of thick

and colourful foliage enchanting fragrance, leaving

passers by tempted to the irresistible view of natural

beauty. It has always been a dream about doing

adventurous things and here we got an opportunity to

be a part of mountain biking adventure in the hills of

Kullu and Manali. It was the evening of Jun 3rd, 2009

when we left Berhampur for the adventurous trip along

with the mastermind behind this Co-ordinator of

Students Activity Centre Mr. Vinay Kumar Das. We went to Aut (the place where our base camp was) on 6th

June and we couldn’t believe our eyes what we saw en-route to Aut from Delhi. We were surrounded by

beautiful mountains and hill top houses and the cloud-cover over them as if it was a blanket to protect them. On

7th morning our real journey started and we headed towards our first destination, Jibhi, 20 km from base

camp. While reaching there in our advanced mountain bikes with 10 gears (7 rear and 3 front), we were stunned

by the beautiful scenic views that we only saw in pictures. We were totally lost in the scenic views that forgot to

blink our eyes. Next day, we headed towards next sub camp, Sojha which was 18 kms from Jibhi. It was

simply amazing and thrilling experience, biking through the beautiful mountains surrounded by scenic beauty.

Then we went to the final destination, Jalori Pass, 5kms from Sojha. As the altitude was quite high we went

there trekking rather than in our bikes. We came back and stayed at Sojha that night and we were given good

hospitality. The next morning we had to cover a distance of 80kms from Sojha to Seobagh, where family base

camp was organized. So it was tough challenge but all of us were able to reach our destination safe and healthy.

The next day we went to Manikaran a holy place where temple and Gurudwara are situated side by side. It is

also famous for hot spring water. The next morning we headed for Rohtang Pass to see and experience ice. It

was the most amazing and spectacular experience of our life that we all are stunned by God’s creation of a

heaven-like place on earth. In between we did parasailing which was one heck of a life experience. We also did

so many activities which included river crossing on rope, white water rafting, etc. At last one of the best things

we did was to enjoy the cloudy weather and scenes at Manali. Our journey ended on 15th of June. On our way

back we travelled by bus to Delhi and then by train to Berhampur on 17th of June, 2009.During the trip I

thought, ‘Those days were amazing and unforgettable, I wished if we had more days to spend over there’. We

are very much grateful and thankful to NIST for providing us with this thrilling opportunity to experience a trip of

our life. Our trip was exciting and full of joy and we enjoyed it immensely.

NIST Student in World’s most difficult Mountain BikingMr. Jhasaketan Patra, B. Tech student of 2004-08 batch, the only selected student from the state of Orissa,

Ranges, organized by the Youth Hostel Associations of India (YHAI), New Delhi from 22nd August – 7th

September 2009. The expedition of 600 kms on Mountain Bikes along with 100 other mountain bikers from all

over India, took Jhasaketan 17 long days climbing some of the toughest ranges like, Rohtang Pass (13,051ft),

Bara Locha Pass (16.050ft), Lachung La Pass (16,600ft), Tangla Pass (17,469ft) and finally to the world’s

highest motorable point, Khardung La Pass (18,380 ft).

Sankalp-09The Annual Technical Symposium of ISTE Student’s Chapter, Sankalp-09 held at NIST on 14, 15 & 16

October 2008 witnessed a conglomeration of young technocrats of various technical institutes of the country. It

was most appropriately powered by the punch line- ‘Rephrasing dreams’ which, perhaps, best illustrated its

resolve to attain quality and tap the intellectual technical acumen. This was the 7th version of the original theme

since its inception in the year 2003. Since then the voyage has been propelled with the true

spirit and energy of team work, coordination and determination. Ignited minds needed a catalyst

for engineering the original ideas and sustaining the thirst for knowledge, which was well provided

by the Honourable Director, Prof. Sangram Mudali who set the tone of the event in his
