BEN exists to provide care, support and advice to those in our industries who need our help in times of hardship or distress. They provide a wide range of different types of support depending on your, or your loved ones’, situation. This could mean helping with the cost of specialist disabled equipment for your child, giving you emotional support through an illness or funding a respite break for you and your partner.

Gen3 national sales director, Darren Johnson, bought his 'banger' from us for just £1 and raised £2,000 when he returned by auctioning it to raise funds for the charity. All 39 of the other entrants did the same to raise a significant sum for the charity.

STAFF PROFILESIn this edition of the newsletter we meet the two Davids. One is our Business Centre expert and the other is our Motability expert. So let's delve a little deeper and get to know them both a little better...

DAVID WOOD Meet our first David; David Wood, he's our business centre expert, the 'go to guy' if you want to save money on your company car, van or even utility vehicle. He can suggest the 'best fit' vehicle solutions for your business and he's always happy to help. David has worked for Gordon Lamb for 12 years and his first role was as Rover and MG sales manager. He then moved on to manage our sports car franchise; Lotus, Morgan and Noble. David's passion for the 'fast and furious' hasn't been dampened, as his favourite car is a Nissan GT-R and he likes to travel at high speeds using pedal power in his spare time mountain biking around Sherwood Pines, Ladybower Reservoir and Rother Valley Park. Besides keeping fit on his mountain bike he also keeps his son company at the gym pumping iron and feeling 'the burn'. He is one fit fellow. Keep up the good work David!

DAVID COOPER-FOWKES David Cooper-Fowkes has been at Gordon Lamb Nissan for 7 years. He started his career as a sales executive but a year into his new job he was also given the role of Motability specialist. His favourite car is a Nissan Qashqai, but if he was going to go off brand and 'all vintage' his car of choice would be a Rover P5!

When David isn't dispensing his knowledge about everything Nissan he likes to relax with a nice rib eye steak or a traditional Sunday roast. On Sundays when he's not at work he loves listening to his favourite music. David has an eclectic taste ranging from Rock to Classical collecting over 1,000 vinyl albums and 2,500 compact discs!!

David has a slight phobia of snakes, which is surprising as he used to breed tarantulas for many many years. Rather you than me David!

NASA AND NISSAN TO BUILD SELF-DRIVING VEHICLES FOR EARTH AND MARSNASA and Nissan have announced a five year partnership to build an autonomous vehicle system for use on Earth and across the cosmos.

Engineers from the Japanese company and the American space agency will collaborate at NASA's Ames Research Centre in California. Just up the road from Google's autonomous vehicle testing, as it happens.

Nissan has pledged to have autonomous cars on the roads by 2020 and NASA certainly knows a thing or two about remotely-operated vehicles.

Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of Nissan, explained that NASA will be able to teach the car maker to build durable and reliable interfaces between humans and machines.

For its part, the space agency will look at the work Nissan has done on autonomous navigation.Guiding cars around chaotic city streets,

dodging pedestrians, cyclists and the like is useful when you're planning to build a rover to navigate the fallen scree on the surface of far-flung planets.

“The more we look at it, the more there are a lot of similarities there,” said Pete Worden, director of the Ames Research Centre.

“We have a rover on Mars. It is not very autonomous. As we go deeper into space, into more and more dangerous locations, we need to add that autonomy.”

The immediate goal for the pair is to have an autonomous car - most likely a modified zero-emissions Nissan LEAF - on the road by the end of the year.
