wine into the body and blood of our Lord. Bringing to all of
us the bread of life, where we meet Jesus one to one.
I am blessed to have been called to serve God and His
people; this is my joy as a Deacon.
Please pray for all our Deacons.
Lord God,
in your loving kindness you sent your Son to be our shepherd
and guide. Continue to send workers into your vineyard to
serve your people.
Bless the Deacons who serve us.
Renew within them your Spirit’s seven gifts that they
may be strengthened to carry out faithfully their ministry of
service.
Deacon’s Thoughts
The Life of a Permanent Deacon
Often I am asked what does a Deacon do?
I should make it clear that there are two type of ordained
Deacons. Transitional Deacons are those preparing for the
priesthood and go on to become our ordained Priests about
a year after their diaconal ordination.
The diaconate was restored as a permanent ministry by
Pope Paul VI, on June 18, 1967, upon the recommendation
of the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council. The first
Deacons in the United States were ordained in 1971.
Permanent Deacons are those ordained to live out the
charism of service to God and His people. Ordained to
serve to the Word of God, Sacraments and Charity. This
occurs after the completion of a 4 or 5 year program of
diaconal studies in their Dioceses.
The role of the Deacon is to be a helper of the bishops and
priests, to proclaim by his life the Church's call to serve the
needs of others, to proclaim the Gospel message, to live a
life of fidelity to Christ and the Church and to lead the
community in building a Kingdom of grace, faith, justice,
and compassion. The Deacon is to be a sign and living
witness of the presence of Christ the Servant in the world.
Being called to this ministry is a calling felt deeply within
one’s heart. It is an amazing call to vocation as Jesus
knocks at the door of one’s heart. It is a calling that cannot
be compared to anything else we experience in life. It is a
joyful feeling of serving God and His people.
Most Deacons have full time jobs which requires a balance
of family life, careers and the duties of the diaconate. We
preform Baptisms, assist at one or more Sunday Masses,
preparing and preaching homilies, conducting pre-nuptial
sessions and witnessing marriages. We also conduct wake
services, assist at funeral Masses and conduct cemetery
committals. Many Deacons are also involved in hospital
and nursing home ministry, prison ministry, counseling and
other pastoral activities.
Deacons are not exempt from the obstacles and challenges
of family, life and illnesses, but God reveals himself every
day, showing us his love, mercy and bringing joy into our
hearts, which gives us strength, the heartfelt joy and
knowledge of God’s presence in us.
I have been a Deacon for little over 4 years and it is a real
joy to serve His people. I enjoy preaching and connecting
with the parish people. Preparing couples for weddings and
baptizing children. I know then that it is the Spirit of God
working through me that feeds me and carries me on.
The most joyful part of my ministry is assisting at Mass
during the consecration of the Eucharist. Witnessing the
mystery of the “Transubstantiation” of the bread and
May they love sincerely, show genuine concern for the sick
and the poor, and live holy lives. May they always be faithful
in believing what they read, teaching what they believe, and
practicing what they teach.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Deacon Gino
It is I - Have No Fear"
Does the Lord Jesus seem distant when trials or adversity
come your way? It was at Jesus' initiative that the disciples
sailed across the lake, only to find themselves in a life-
threatening storm. Although they were experienced fisher-
men, they feared for their lives. While Jesus was not with
them in the boat, he, nonetheless watched for them in pray-
er. When he perceived their trouble, he came to them on
the sea and startled them with his sudden appearance. Do
you look for the Lord's presence when you encounter diffi-
culty or challenges?
Fight Fear with Faith
This dramatic incident on the sea of Galilee revealed Peter's
character more fully than others. Here we see Peter's impul-
siveness - his tendency to act without thinking of what he
was doing. He often failed and came to grief as a result of
his impulsiveness. In contrast, Jesus always bade his disci-
ples to see how difficult it was to follow him before they set
out on the way he taught them. A great deal of failure in the
Christian life is due to acting on impulse and emotional fer-
vor without counting the cost. Peter, fortunately in the mo-
ment of his failure clutched at Jesus and held him firmly.
Every time Peter fell, he rose again. His failures only made
him love the Lord more deeply and trust him more intently.
The Lord keeps watch over us at all times, and especially
in our moments of temptation and difficulty. Do you rely on
the Lord for his strength and help? Jesus assures us that
we have no need of fear if we trust in Him and in his great
love for us. When calamities or trials threaten to overwhelm
you, how do you respond? With faith and hope in God's love,
care, and presence with you?
