Gender Theory • Gender theory looks at the stereotypes males and females face in

media. • Women are often shown as domestic, emotional and sensitive

people. Where as men are shown as strong, aggressive and professional people.

• In the film Legally blonde the character Elle woods in the beginning is seen as a very feminine, emotional character who was lacking any sort of knowledge. In the film she is seen wanting the love of a man. Stereotypically in pre war times women where only seen as home makers to there husbands. As apposed to being able to work or get the same level of education as men did.

Media effects debate

• Hegemony vs pluralismHegemony is the belief that media has a direct Influence on its audiences. Pluralism is the belief that as a audience we are not influenced by what we being shown in the media.

Hegemony (evidence)• Mark Duggan- a 29 year old from Tottenham was shot

dead by police on 4th august 2011. The police were attempting to arrest him on suspicion of planning an attack with the possession of a handgun. Duggan was shot in the chest and later died that same day.

• Many news outlets such as the BBC and The Guardian had covered the story.

• Influence from media outlets resulted in anger across the UK for the way in which police had acted in that situation.

• The constant outlook that the polices action in this situation was wrong resulted in hundreds of people protesting and rioting to make a point of the wrong doing in this situation.

Mark Duggan, 29, is shot dead by police in Ferry Lane, Tottenham, at 18:15 BST.The death happens during an operation where specialist firearm officers and officers from Operation Trident, the unit which deals with gun crime in the African and Caribbean communities, are attempting to carry out an arrest.Mr Duggan is a passenger in a minicab. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) announces it will investigate the incident and later says it believes two shots were fired by police. It also confirms that an illegal firearm was recovered from the scene.

Mark Duggan's family win the right to appeal against an inquest's finding that he was lawfully killed by police. Find out about the aftermath of his death in Tottenham.

Evidence (BBC)

Pluralism

• On the other hand some people may argue that the riots spread across the UK due to peoples greed and selfishness apposed to them wanting to fight for justice.

Evidence (BBC and Twitter)

In the image above you can see local shops in Tottenham being burnt down in the riots

The image on the right shows some of the tweets on twitter about the riots.

As you can see it almost became a “joke” instead of the original campaign being against lawful killing it became about peoples own individual greed.

Cultivation Theory

• The cultivation theory suggests that through constant reminding certain opinions can be normalised within society and or within culture.

Diffusion Theory

• Knowledge – social norms • Persuasion – advantages or possible

compatibility with the idea. • Decision – adoption or rejection• These are the three steps which take place in

the diffusion theory.
