Artist Analysis

This photograph uses projection over the models body. The projection could symbolise clothing material, someone's inner personality or thoughts. It also looks like that the surroundings are foggy and unclear, forcing focus onto the body and the colourful projection in comparison to the cloud like looking background. What I find interesting about this photograph is that is the full body being shown and used for the projection. This also could be seen as being seductive. especially the way her arms are placed, it allows the viewer to see her hourglass feminine figure. She's indulging herself in the clouds of smoke, drawing someone in with the unusual print and seductive body composition. She looks content, like she's proud, powerful and confident, like she's representing domineering women. Putting all these aspects together, I think it looks dreamy and reminds me of like in a movie, if a man was dreaming of his perfect women, this could be her. The print itself looks likes flowers. The photographer may of used this floral print to relate to the issue of being more natural when it comes to clothing. The photographer may be against leather/fur being used to make clothing for us. Maybe they’re trying to communicate that you can still be beautiful naturally, even naked. My personal response to this picture is pretty positive, I like print especially and how it’s the focus point within the fog.

Evaluation • I began my exam project by researching photographs linking to our theme of Convert and obscure and

being to understand the meanings of the words more. My initial idea for idea 1 was taking photographs intently hiding parts of my models face with flower petals, obscuring some features and skin. My initial idea for idea 2 was blurred lights. We visited the Southbank, London and took photographs of light reflections in the water and the surrounding buildings. My initial idea for the exam was taking a set of photographs of clothing prints and projecting them onto a model. I thought they both were a successful set of initial photographs that I could work well with and develop.

• Overall I was pleased with my initial photographs. I do think I could’ve taken more photographs when in London for idea 2, as I had slight trouble finding photographs to work with in the editing stage but after developments I was feeling more confident with the outcomes. Also with idea 2 I think I should’ve experimented more with my model in different poses, giving my photographs more variety. Technically I wasn’t fully pleased with my exam photographs as they turned out slightly grainy, to improve this in future I should spend more time finding the right settings on my camera to take the photographs in.

• My first set of photographs for idea 1 was my model being hidden by a bunch of flowers, after editing I wasn’t pleased with the majority of these photographs so I didn’t continue with this set and took another with a similar idea which I was more happy with. I began to develop these photographs by using Photoshop, changing the saturation of the models face to surroundings to emphasize her facial expression. I also developed the photographs by layering the original petals on top of prints of photographs. My 2nd set of photographs was developed through projection, which I had never used before so I wasn’t sure how the set was going to come out. I projected my photographs onto a wall and had a model make a shadow with their silhouette in different places and positions of the photographs. I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome, as initially I didn’t think it was going to be successful. For my 8 hour exam I also used projection. I took photographs of a range of different clothing prints and projected them over my model’s face and body. I developed them using copydex with the idea of my initial photographs starting as fabric and now the final photographs will end as fabric.

Evaluation

• I didn’t have a wide variety of developments and experiments. When it came to the exam/exam prep, I chose to stick with things I’ve done similarly before that I knew would be successful. For example, I’ve used copydex multiple times before in previous coursework. I also used projections a lot in my exam, differently to copydexing I haven’t actually experimented with the projector before my exam prep photographs (idea 1). I wasn’t sure if my silhouette idea was going to work, especially because I didn’t know how I’d photograph it but once I started experimenting with angles and my model in different poses I was pleased that I’d achieved my initial intensions. In relation to the use of projections, I researched the artist Corriette Schoenaert as she has used projections a lot in her work. I used this technique in my 8 hour exam. Unlike photographing the silhouette, like Schoenaert I projected images straight onto my model.

• Overall, I was surprisingly pleased with my outcomes from the exam as when I started the 8 hours by projecting my fabric prints onto my model, I wasn’t sure that I could produce a successful set of photographs from them but when I started editing the photographs I became more confident in my initial idea. I tried to vary each photograph as much as I could, using all prints, different compositions, poses and edits all slightly different but still noticeable that is was a set of photographs. I was pleased that when I was taking the projection photographs that I chose to spend more time in the studio experimenting with different prints and poses.

• If this project continued and I had more time to take it to the next level I would start by creating a magazine cover to have my 2nd piece of coursework (the interview magazine brief) set out on as if she was on the front cover of a magazine. With my second idea I think I would retake my initial photographs in a studio because I feel like they’re abit less professional than my other initial sets. I would've liked to actually place my exam prep, idea 2 photographs in an area flower petals, not just layering them over. Also maybe floating them in water with the petals surrounding them. Overall I’m happy with what I’ve submitted.
