The Wind Beneath Our Wings

It has often been said that the person behind a successful man or woman is an ever supportive and understanding spouse. Well, tonight, in our own little way, RCNMH is holding a rare “Spouses Night” to pay tribute and recognition to our dear spouses who have supported us in our various endeavours whether professional, personal or socio-civic in nature. Yes, indeed, in a way, we can call our respective spouses “the wind beneath our

wings.”

Even as we have our wings to fly, the wind beneath them is what enables us to effortlessly soar to greater heights and to bounce back and fly again when we do fall every so often. While tonight’s “Spouses Night” might not exactly be the kind of tribute we want to give (as the spouses will actually be “working” in tonight’s program), the thought of giving importance and recognition to our spouses I believe should already mean a lot and speak volumes. I know we don’t say it often, but I am pretty sure a lot of us cannot imagine a life without our spouses. As much as none of us are perfect, neither are our spouses. But one thing is for sure, in our respective eyes, they are as perfect as can be.

So before we go to bed tonight, I encourage all RCNMHers to do something special for our spouses or at least a symbolic loved one who serves as the wind beneath our wings. After all, Rotary is not just about service, but also about love and family. And who knows, after your act of kindness and love tonight, we may have found a new member for the club by next week. Yes, wouldn’t that be amazing if all of us are able to bring in our respective spouses or at least one family member to the club.

By the power vested in me, I hereby formally launch our “69 members” campaign tonight (no dirty minds please)! Good luck and God bless you all!

Night Prayer

Thank you, Lord , for gathering all of us here this evening. We thank you for the men and women who labor to bring more members into the work of serving above self. May the seed of service they plant, bear fruit that will endure. We also thank You for the spouses who have made tonight’s meeting possible. May You also make them even greater blessings to the world through Rotary. Empower tonight’s speaker so that she may effectively share her message to all of us. Our Club has been so blessed -- we are awed by Your generosity and Your blessings to us that has translated itself into exemption from the Mid-Year Review. We praise You for inspiring our leaders to make dreams of others come true, for enabling the attendance of our youth in Ryla, for the continuing work in attempting to eradicate TB and so many others. You are a God who cannot be outdone. Continue to lead us and form us so that we may be men and women after Your image. Amen.

Wind Beneath My Wingsby Bette Midler

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.It must have been cold there in my shadow,to never have sunlight on your face. You were content to let me shine, that’s your way.You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory, while you were the one with all the strength.A beautiful face without a name for so long.A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero, and everything I would like to be?I can fly higher than an eagle,‘cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed, but I’ve got it all here in my heart.I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.I would be nothing without you.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero? You’re everything I wish I could be.I could fly higher than an eagle,‘cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Did I ever tell you you’re my hero? You’re everything, everything I wish I could be.Oh, and I, I could fly higher than an eagle,‘cause you are the wind beneath my wings,‘cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Oh, the wind beneath my wings. You, you, you, you are the wind beneath my wings.Fly, fly, fly away. You let me fly so high.Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.Oh, you, you, you, the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly high against the sky,so high I almost touch the sky.Thank you, thank you, thank God for you, the wind beneath my wings.

CROSSROADSby Mario R. Nery

THE SILENT EVOLUTION

It is interesting for all Rotarians to know that Rotary has been undergoing a silent evolution from its first years up to today. This fact is a sure indication of an organization that seeks to continue to be relevant and useful for as long as it exists. It also means that Rotary knows how to read the signs of the times, and adjusts itself accordingly. The adjustments, however, are in its orientation and in its practices, not in its fundamental principles

When Paul Harris and three others organized the first Rotary Club, the first intention was to provide service to each other and to develop fellowship among themselves in a cold and lonely city. They soon realized that if they expanded their concept of service, their Club could be more useful to the community. Thus was born the first community service of Rotary - a public toilet, which responded to an urgent need. This major paradigm shift signalled the beginning of millions of various types of services to communities, which accompanied the expansion of Rotary all over the world.

Twenty-five years ago, after experimentation in the Philippines, Rotary had another major evolutionary change. It launched Polio Plus, a project which not only involved all Rotary Clubs in the world, but other civic organizations and government as well. It is easily one of the major examples of extensive networking beyond Rotary itself. Shortly thereafter, women were invited to join Rotary, an excellent strategy to add spice and life to the organization. Today, we are inviting the families of Rotarians to get involved in Rotary programs. Rotary has recognized that since many of our community-based programs have families as the major beneficiaries, we can build stronger communities and clubs, and families if all were involved. It is a win-win situation. And the evolution for good continues.

RCNMH Exempted from Mid-Year Review

In another feather to its cap, the Rotary Club of New Manila Heights was lauded during the last Presidents Meeting on January 16, 2010 as one among 29 out of 96 clubs in District 3780 to be exempted from the Mid-Year Review. Among the criteria for exemption, a Rotary Club must have accomplished the following: (1) paid all S.A.R. dues, including that of the July-December 2009 semester; (2) paid all magazine subscription dues; (3) paid District Governor’s fund & District disaster fund dues; (4) achieved and paid R.I. at least the 10% increase in your club membership goal; (5) paid at least 60% of TRF PHF/sustaining members pledged during the Governor’s Visit; (6) completed a service project on water management, health, hunger or literacy; (7) submitted the club’s mid-year report to its AG (by Jan. 10, 2010).

Of particular note was the ultra-comprehensive 170-page Mid-Year Report submitted by President Boone that garnered “great” and “outstanding” kudos from DG Dulce and AG Chito Borromeo, respectively.

Other Rotary Clubs exempted from the Mid-Year Review include those from Agham, Ayala Heights, Bagong Silangan, Batasan Hills, Central Fairview, Commonwealth, Cubao, Cubao Central, Cubao Kamias, Cubao South, Cubao West, Diliman North, Greenmeadows, Holy Spirit, Kagitingang Cubao, Loyola Heights, Metro Diliman, Metro West Triangle, New Manila South, North Balintawak, QC Circle, QC Southwest, San Bartolome, SFDM, Sta. Another RCNMH Anti-TB Program Launchedby PE Ma. Elisa Allado

The St. Elizabeth Hall at the Mt. Carmel Shrine Parish was abuzz with activity as parents, children, Red Cross volunteers and SSDM (Social Services Development Ministry) staff gathered last Friday, January 22, 2010. They were there for the tuberculin (PPD) testing of 102 children aged 0-9. As early as 1:00 p.m., registration started already, and by 2:00 p.m., the hall was filled up.

PE Baby Allado had to start the program earlier than scheduled as the children were getting restless. She advanced the film showing on multiple drug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB), which is the consequence of untreated or wrongly treated TB. It was a documentary of several patients sharing their experience about the stigma of having the disease and the result of not seeking immediate consult. This was followed by a short lecture on TB discussing what the disease is all about, how it is transmitted and how it is treated. She also corrected the common misperceptions about the disease as well as preventive measures for its spread. After the program, PE Baby met with the DOTs partners who will administer the medicines daily for 6 months.

11

This is the 4th anti-TB program of RCNMH and the 3rd sponsored by the RC of Makati through Kabisig ng Kalahi of which PE Baby is also a volunteer. The beneficiaries belong to Barangay Mariana in New Manila and our new partner is the SSDM of Mt. Carmel Shrine Parish headed by Sister Amy Berso, CM. Angela Quila, Director and anti-TB chair of the Kabisig ng Kalahi, gave an overview of the project before the actual tuberculin testing was conducted with the help of Quezon City Red Cross (QCRC) volunteer nurses and Dr. Luverne dela Cruz who also regularly serves in our Kalusugan Center.

Emcee during the program was Rtn. Janice Adolfo, presently OIC Administrator of QCRC, who has committed to do the mother’s classes and the health education component of the program. Due to the short-notice change in schedule, only a few RCNMH members were able to attend the launch. Outside of PE Baby and Rtn. Janice, also present were PP Elsa Unson and PDG Mar Nery.

Results of the screening will be read on Jan. 25 (Monday) after which the number of children who will proceed to the treatment phase will be known. Turnover of medicines and the MOA signing has been scheduled on February 11 at 2:00pm at the same venue. The 6-month treatment phase will start on March 1, 2010.

RCNMH Makes A Wish Come Trueby RCNMH Rotaractors, Roald Jap Ignacio and Jojo Flancia

Last January 14, 2010, the Rotary Club of New Manila Heights, in partnership with Informatics International College-Diliman and the GMA 7 “Wish Ko Lang” team, made the wish of a college education for visually impaired concert artist, Jean Mary Avenilla, come true.

In a red-letter campus day, the faculty, staff and students of Informatics prepared a special program for Jean, including the singing of the “Wish Ko Lang” theme song by the school’s Hymno choir.

“Wish Ko Lang” is an award-winning and top-rating public affairs TV show known for granting wishes of deserving but economically challenged Filipinos. More than just giving material items, the show takes pride in granting life-long gifts. In the taped episode (later shown on January 23), Jean Avenilla was awarded by RCNMH and Informatics President, Boone Ongchoco, a certificate of full scholarship to enable Jean to finish a BS degree in Informatics-Diliman. Pres. Boone also promised to help Jean find a job after graduation thru the help of another RCNMH service partner, myTrabaho Holdings, and RCNMH’s very own “Karunungan at Kabuhayan” Center. Jean also went home with souvenir shirts from RCNMH and Informatics and more importantly, a brand new computer set with “JAWS” installed in it. “JAWS” is the accessibility software that translates text to sound and vice versa.

Pres. Boone and Treas. Cris, Informatics personnel, guests and the GMA 7 “Wish Ko Lang” staff were all teary-eyed and touched when Jean and her parents expressed their gratitude. Indeed, nothing can replace the feeling of fulfillment for being able to share one’s blessings to less fortunate people who have but simple dreams.

RCNMH Sends Largest Delegation to RYLA Campby Pres. Boone Ongchoco

In another proof of its commitment to a balanced program of service, the Rotary Club of New Manila Heights went all out in its service advocacy towards the Youth or the so-called “New Generation,” as it not only co-hosted, but also sponsored no less than 12 delegates to the RYLA Training Camp held at the Sierra Madre Resort in Tanay, Rizal this past January 23-24, 2010.

The 12 delegates of RCNMH were chosen from the junior and senior high students of the Interact clubs of P. Bernardo High School, Lourdes College of Bulacan and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel College. The camp participants were exposed to leadership mentoring and taught how do develop action plans by their Rotarian-mentors.

President Boone was ably represented by Informatics Vice President Howell Mabalot, who gave a brief talk on the importance of having POWER (P-eople skills, O-bjective and life goals, W-ork ethic, E-nergy/passion, and R-esults). In a message read to the campers, Pres. Boone also encouraged the participants to get involved in extra-curricular activities like the Interact/Rotaract Club and the RYLA camp, as these are the type of activities that will make them well-rounded and prepare them for the rigors and realities of the real world, and of course, allow them to give back to their respective communities.

In a packed 7-Module Training Program, the RYLA campers were even able to sneak in some fellowship and singing on the first night and topped it off with some worthwhile tree-planting in an area near the campsite on the second day. RC Paraiso President, Betsy Bulanadi, who also served as the lead coordinator for the camp, challenged all the participants to effect real change by implementing their respective action plans and projects in the next two months. Of course, it will be up to the camp sponsors like our club to see it to it that we assist our own delegates as they move on beyond the planning stage and into the real world.

RCNMH Sponsors Training for Public School Teachers

As part of its advocacy in helping to improve the quality of education in the country, the Rotary Club of New Manila and service partner Informatics sponsored the recent lecture forum on “New Trends and Methodologies for the Modern Educational Managers” held at the Carlos Albert Session Hall, Quezon City Hall on January 23, 2010.

This training for public school teachers in Quezon City is under the “Continuing Education for Teachers” and “Hakbang sa Bagong Kaalaman Tungo sa de Kalidad na Edukasyon ng Kabataan” program of the Office of the Vice Mayor and the Division of City Schools. The Rotary Club of New Manila Heights and Informatics donated 500 blank CD’s and lent two LCD projectors, respectively, for the said forum participated in by approximately 600 teachers.

PE Baby to Sing in “Love Songs & Lullabies”Fund Raising Concert

by Pres. Boone Ongchoco

The R.I. District 3780 Presidents-Elect will hold a fund raising for a cause concert entitled “LOVE SONGS & LULLABIES” in time for the celebration of the Valentine season. Concert date will be on February 26, 2010, six in the evening at the Quezon City Performing Arts Theater, Amoranto Sports Complex.

All District 3780 clubs are enjoined to participate and be able to share in the funds to be raised from the said concert. Performers in the concert will come from the ranks of the Presidents-Elect and other Rotarians, with our very own PE Baby Allado to perform a couple of solo numbers. Light snacks and refreshment will be served, with food booths to be made available as part of the whole fund raising exercise.

Upon presentation to and approval by the RCNMH board last January 23, 2010, our club will “invest” in the project through the purchase of 5 tickets worth a total of P5,000.00. This will entitle our club to participate in the 50 percent share of the proceeds from the sales of the 6th up to the nth number of tickets sold by our club. Tickets for the event will be sold to Rotarians and the public alike at P1,000.00 per ticket good for 2 persons.

Likewise, any member who can solicit and bring in a sponsor or sponsors shall automatically earn and get 50 percent of the amount he/she can solicit, provided that payment is made not later than February 25, 2010.

Indeed, the future of Rotary is in good hands as the Presidents-Elect prepare early for the Rotary Year 2010-11.

RCNMH Girds Up for “An Evening with Paul Harris” Affair

It has been quite a while since the Rotary Club of New Manila Heights has sponsored a major district affair. As such, President Boone, the RCNMH board and of course, TRF Annual Giving Chair, CP Oyie Valarao, are leaving no stone unturned in making sure that the February 25, 2010 district affair, “An Evening with Paul Harris” comes out a success.

Chaired by no less than the indefatigable Club TRF Committee Chair (and District Governor 2012-13 candidate), CP Oyie Valarao, the event promises to be one of many “firsts” and surprises. Only held for the second time ever in the district, “An Evening with Paul Harris” is a night of tribute to all Paul Harris fellows for the current Rotary Year (2009-10). With over 200 pledges and 160-plus paid Paul Harris donors (16 of which are coming from our very own club) for the year, a full-packed Camp Crame Multi-Purpose Hall is expected. Of course, our club (Paul Harris fellow or not) is expected to come in full force and help out in this rare district affair.

Among the assignments to be divided amongst RCNMHers are the band music, invocation, national anthem, usher duties, wine and confetti. The food catering, invitations and the highly anticipated coffee table book are being overseen by CP Oyie herself. Engineers and architects among the ranks of the current batch of Hands On Presidents are actively taking part in the venue design layout and backdrop.

Once again, the unique brand of RCNMH teamwork, unity and spirit will be tested as the countdown to D-day begins. Pres. Boone, however, has no doubt that the club will close ranks and rise to the occasion like never before. Viva RCNMH!
