Dear Friends, As I write this article it is with the ‘Remembering Season’ just passing into our recent memory. The ‘Remembering Season’ is when we ‘Remember’ to say thank you for the harvest; when we ‘Remember’ on All Saints’ Day all those who have served God and the Church in a wonderful way; when we ‘Remember’ on All Souls’ Day our own loved ones who have departed; and, of course, we ‘Remember’ those who have given their lives in war so that we can live in peace and freedom. It does us well to ‘Remember’. You, like me, will probably have seen photos or television images of the 888,246 ceramic poppies ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ at The Tower of London. [Featured on the cover of the last edition of Niddside News - Ed.] Each poppy represents each one of the British lives given during The First World War. Ruth and I visited Tower Hill a couple of weeks before Remembrance Day, and even then, the vision of all those poppies was overwhelming. By the time the last poppy was placed in position on 11th November, the immensity of the sacrifice was quite incomprehensible. The people who were fellow visitors on the day we were there, almost without exception, were stunned by what they were seeing. The very elderly were lost in the memories of those they had actually known; the young were awed by seeing

adults with tears in their eyes; and the young adults were finding it difficult to appreciate that those who had died were no older than themselves. But, we need to remember, we must remember, as ALL that is past has contributed to what we are today. I’ll leave you to ponder on that thought.

+ + + + + Another form of remembering concerns ourselves as individuals. Before the major Festivals in the church’s calendar, there are times for reflection on our personal relationship with God - Easter has Lent and Christmas has Advent. It’s a shame that both of these seasons get lost in the general melee of preparation for the ‘Big Event’, and their purpose becomes obscure and generally overlooked. A recent survey was carried out to discover the most inappropriate Advent Calendar, the one that was in the worst possible taste. Needless to say there were quite a number of candidates, but the one that was in the No. 1 slot, came from the ‘Ann Summers’ shops. It never ceases to amaze me how commerce is so devoid of originality in promoting their goods and services that they have to highjack something so sensitive to Christians as an Advent Calendar. Perhaps we should recognise that the Christian Faith has more going for it than we sometimes think – whilst folks might not fully appreciate the significance of what is being done, it

certainly does get people thinking and talking about what Christianity means to them whether they realise it or not. So let us hope that in all the rush and tumble of preparing to celebrate Christmas we don’t, proverbially, throw the baby out with the bath water.

May we all enjoy a blessèd and holy Christmas,

A message from Clive BillennessA message from Clive BillennessA message from Clive BillennessA message from Clive Billenness After more than 10 years as Editor of Niddside News, having now moved to France, I am now also stepping down as Editor of Niddside News.

With effect from 1 January 2015 , the new Editor will be Mrs Emma Claye.

I would like to express my gratitude to all the people who have acted as correspondents and contributors over the years, as well as everyone who has helped to collate and distribute Niddside around the Parish. I would especially like to thank Paul Spurgeon for his support in my work.

I would also like to express my thanks to our advertisers, who help us so much meet the costs of printing and distribution.

Finally, I would like to thank the team at Lamberts Print Copy and Design, who for so many years have created a superb printed version of the magazine for us, ensuring that we received all our copies, often at short notice, carefully collated and whatever the weather.

Without all the support which has been so generously given over the years, this magazine could not have been produced, printed and distributed.

I am now moving on to become Editor of a new online Parish Magazine in the Chaplaincy of Midi-Pyrenees and Aude:

The formal vote in Synod, followed by the signing of the legislation in front of the entire meeting by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York marks of the completion of the legal process which has already included approval by Parliament and the granting of Royal Assent by the Queen.

Archbishop Justin Welby said that “Now the Church of England can “start to embrace a new way of being Church” and “moving forward together”

The Archbishop predicted that within 10 to 15 years, half the Church of England’s bishops might be women.

The Rev Rosalind Rutherford, 63, said: “I have been waiting for this since I was nine, and I noticed that my brother was allowed to join the church choir and I was not.”

Legislation will now also be introduced by the Government to allow women bishops to take seats in the House of Lords. There are 26 seats for bishops in the House, and the 38 bishops queue for these based on length of service.

The intention is, however, to allow newly-appointed women bishops to ‘jump the queue’ to ensure female representation there as quickly as possible.

It was a particular joy for Linda that she received her award from the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu (pictured opposite).

Linda said “For me, this marked the culmination of a journey which I started almost 14 years ago, when I first enrolled at York St John. I was especially pleased that Paul and Ruth Spurgeon were able to join me, as Paul’s support during my studies has been invaluable to me.

“I would also like to express my deep gratitude to the Lower Nidderdale congregation who have travelled this journey at my side and who remain in my prayers even though I am far away.”

HARVEST THANKSGIVINGHARVEST THANKSGIVINGHARVEST THANKSGIVINGHARVEST THANKSGIVING

On October 3 the congregation at the Harvest Thanksgiving Service was wowed by breathtaking floral decorations which were in the church in readiness for a wedding to take place the following day. Most agreed that Hunsingore Church had never looked so magnificent.

The collection taken during the service totalled £166.32 and was donated to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

Following the service, the Harvest Supper was served in the village hall. Although there were fewer diners than in past years, nevertheless we managed to make short work of the splendid spread.

Thanks must go to all those who contributed the fine assortment of salads and desserts, cooked the meats and to those who not only prepared the hall but cleared up afterwards; every year they do us proud. The evening raised £345 for church funds.

There will be a traditional carol service in St Michael's Church, Cowthorpe, at 7pm on 19 December.

This year, instead of an evening Carol Service at St John's, Hunsingore, there will be a Family Communion Service with carol singing at 10 am on 21 December at which the visiting preacher will be James Bell, Bishop for the Episcopal Area of Ripon .

Mince Pies and refreshments will be served after the service and we hope this revised time will be more suitable for families with children and for those who don't like to venture out on dark winter nights.

THE DAILY BREADTHE DAILY BREADTHE DAILY BREADTHE DAILY BREAD

On 10 October we welcomed back the Badapple Theatre for a performance of "The Daily Bread", a new play written by Kate Bramley .

A basically simple plot - Augusto de Villio, the heir to a newspaper fortune causes a run on a bank and goes into hiding in Bottledale where he masquerades as August de Ville and runs a very successful bakery. His cover is blown when he wins a

7

baking competition and his photograph is published, his enemies come looking for him and he vanishes. The resemblance of a television personality, a clergyman, to the missing man leaves the audience wondering whether he has taken on yet another persona.

Only one actor, Colin Montcrieff, appeared on stage yet we saw ten characters, all so different. Luckily, the headscarved Mrs Beaton, a Bottledale local, put in frequent appearances to keep us up to date with the plot as Frankie Craddock, a taciturn farmer, Kiefer Floyd and Hugh Feanley Rawtenstall graced the stage.

Mrs Hester Blumenthal, the lady who judged WI the baking competition, was quite wonderful - where did she get that hat and matching cardigan? - as was Nigella Awesome, an old flame of Augusto's.

When Mafioso Gordano Ramsayano and his minder, Big Tony, turned up at August's bakery in search of Augusto we were treated to a superb piece of comic theatre as Montcrieff, playing both Big Tony and Augusto, chased himself across the stage , fought with himself until Augusto was victorious and Big Tony had a heart attack, allowing Augusto to escape. Pure slapstick!

Colin Montcrieff was outstanding. With a quick change of headgear or the addition sunglasses, different accents and body language, in an instant he became convincingly one character after another, and that wasn't all!

The oven on stage was real and during the course of the play Montcrieff kneaded dough, placed it in the oven to bake and then passed the bread round at the end for us all to sample - and very good it was too!

There would seem to be no limits to his talents; not only is he an accomplished

actor but his former careers as a clown and baker made this play the perfect vehicle for him. This was one of the most entertaining theatre evenings we have enjoyed in Hunsingore.

Many thanks to Jane and her team who always provide such tasty food, and to Impressario Nigel who arranges our theatre evenings.

Budding thespians from Kirk Hammerton C of E Primary School and Staveley Community Primary School joined forces for a very special performance of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on Wednesday the 15th of October.

As part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival, 30 children aged 8 - 11 spent 6 weeks bringing the play together and getting first-hand experience of the theatrical process.

Their performance was one of 1,000 performances (involving 35,000 children) taking place nationwide to mark the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth.

Richard Howson, director and Class 4 teacher at Staveley Community Primary School, said: “The pupils have worked incredibly hard on this for weeks. After the initial read through I wasn’t sure if they would even understand the plot – but they have definitely risen to the challenge. We are all very proud of their achievements and know they will remember this for years to come.”

Although the abridged play script was provided by Shakespeare Schools Festival, the staging and setting of the play was left to each school’s own interpretations.

Rather than renaissance Padua, Staveley and Kirk Hammerton’s play was given the contemporary setting of a University Freshers’ Week.

The director also included a heavy rock band for the wedding scene, a set of dancing stained-glass windows and a very distinctive Brian May-style wig.

Timmy Gordon, Year 5 pupil at Kirk Hammerton, said: “Not all of us are acting in the play. I’m part of the tech team who do all the lighting and special effects. In the practice workshops we got to tell the man in the booth what to do – that was great!”

Stuart Gentle, parent of a year 5 girl and Chair of Governors at Staveley said: “All the kids did Mr Howson, the school and themselves proud… The story came across loud and clear to the audience with a nice blend of enthusiasm and comedy. The appraisal from the theatre was very complimentary, particularly the comments on how attentive and well-behaved the children had been.”

Head Teacher

Sue Fernyhough reports

As we head into the darkest months of the year, I would like to light up your world with news from Nun Monkton School

All the children performed the tale of Tiddalik the Frog, a legend from Australian Aboriginal mythology to illustrate why water is so important to us and the think about those people who do not have access to clean water.

There was a tremendous laughter in Church as we watched Tiddalik (Will) drink all the water and eventually giggle it all back into the lakes.

Our children have been taking part in cluster sporting events and achieved third place in the football competition. We are so proud of all our children’s accomplishments and were thrilled when Will qualified to go through to the next round in the cross-country.

The KS2 children are learning to play the keyboard this term. Miss Doherty, our music specialist, comes into school every week and she is so impressed by the children’s progress so far.

Every Friday after lunch, the children change out of their uniform, put on some warm clothes, their waterproof coat, trousers and a pair of wellington boots. They then travel to Tindal Woods near Shipton by Beningbrough to take part in Forest Schools.

This has provided opportunities for all the children to achieve, develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.

As we hastily approach Christmas, the rehearsals have begun for our Christmas Play – Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, which the children will perform on Thursday 11th December.

The last day of term marks our Nativity Play in Church which will be at 11am, after which the school will close for the Christmas break.

It has been a fast and exciting term, with never a dull moment. We all look forward to the new term and more incredible facts and knowledge being learnt.

If you would like to see for yourself what goes on in our school, please phone or email to make an appointment.
