FAST FOR HOPE2012-2013

What is Fast For Hope?Fast for Hope is a District-wide initiative celebrated in February

Club members are asked to forego a meal, or endure a hardship in recognition of those who have less

Clubs donate the proceeds of the fast to the Fast For Hope Initiative

Each club is asked to contribute a minimum of $10/member

Annually, District 5960 averages $39,000 for poverty eradication efforts through clubs FFH activities1998While the slide is on the screen read this: Fast For Hope has been conducted in our District for at least 15 years and the unique aspect of FFH is that it gives the District resources to engage in focused effort and currently that effort is to eradicate poverty in at least one community3Eradicating Poverty?

2006Eradicating poverty? Really? Well in 2006 Jeffry Sachs spoke at Rotary International and created hope and excitement within District 5960 leadership that it is possible to eradicate poverty, and in fact4Creating ways for people to solve their own problems isnt just an opportunity in 2010. It is an obligation.

Jacqueline Novogratz, founder of the Acumen Fund and author of Blue Sweater

Not only is eradicating poverty possible during our lifetime, it is an obligation according to Jacqueline Novogratz5

After several years of working with Rotary Clubs in Nicaragua, meeting and interviewing community development organizations working in Nicaragua the first formal partnerships were established between the Masaya Rotary Club, AKF School, District 5960 and Rotarians7A Shared Vision EmergesAmongst the PartnersThrough accompaniment, partners and communities that desire participate in a process of development in order to achieve a sustainable, healthy and economically secure environment.

2009For those who are presenting this vision statement needs to be memorized and delivered while looking at the audience then return to this scriptthere were some missteps prior to this accomplishment, some failures even and as Dave Damberger from Engineers without Borders shares in his TED Talk it is critical in working in international development that we recognize and admit failures and then move on without recognizing the missteps and failures we tend to repeat them8Hopes For The Nicaraguan InitiativeLong term sustainable development (hand up, not hand out)Recognition of cultural similarities and differencesWide ranging impact on all participants

Take a minute and think about that and when you are ready, wed like you to share a few of your thoughts to the group
