Climbing To The Clouds On The CogThey said Sylvester Marsh

was crazy, and maybe he was — crazy like a fox.

In NHPTV’s newest documentary, explore the history of the iconic Mt. Washington Cog Railway, from its founding visionary Sylvester Marsh, to its current operations, and all the dramatic moments that tested the existence of this engineering marvel.

From its conception in 1852, the plan was for the railroad to be used for tourism — to allow people to see the awe-inspiring beauty of the highest peak in the Northeast and to reach its summit. Sylvester Marsh, through ingenuity and inventiveness, would create the world’s first cog railway that could climb miles and miles of elevation, fighting gravity and inertia.

On July 3, 1869, “Old Peppersass” became the first cog-driven train to climb the 6,288-foot Mt. Washington. What followed was nearly 150 years of adversity, persistence and success.

NHPTV has a special connection with the Cog. The documentary’s producer and videographer, Steve Giordani, was once an engineer for the Cog. He changed careers after becoming friends with a man filming a documentary about the Cog’s steam engines. The Mt. Washington Cog Railway: Climbing to the Clouds premieres May 22 at 8 PM on NHPTV PRIME additional airdates on PRIME & EXPLORE and online at video.nhptv.org
