In season two of WINDOWS TO THE WILD, our ever-ready host, dressed in an olive plaid shirt with khaki pants, greets the camera like an old friend. He grabs his fishing gear from his road-worn blue truck, introduces us to the Little Lyford Pond caretaker, Chuck, and lets us tag along as they explore the rustic cabins and the pristine pond that he’s just itching to fish.
Not much has changed since the beginning of WINDOWS TO THE WILD. The equipment may be lighter and more durable, but as host Willem Lange says in this early episode, “We never have enough time to sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty around us. Well, that’s going to change.”
For 15 seasons, the WINDOWS TO THE WILD crew has taken viewers right alongside Willem to experience the outdoors as he does. “We’re trying to introduce viewers of all ages to beautiful hidden wild places they may never have heard of, to show the joy of the outdoor life — winter, summer, sunny or precipitating — and to encourage folks who, because of advancing age, may have put away their outdoor enthusiasms to take them up again,” says Willem.
Willem, who turned 84 this past May, is not as spry as he used to be, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying his time outdoors. “Well, I get around much less well now than I did in the beginning, which means fewer Katahdins and Moosilaukes, but I constantly channel Tennyson: ‘Old age hath yet his honour and his toil. Death closes all; but something ere the
end, Some work of noble note, may yet be done, not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.’ ”
Season 15 of WINDOWS TO THE WILD kicks off this month with three new episodes. You’ll meet Michael Beaumier and his Siamese cat, Rico, who are hiking the Appalachian Trail; a group of students from the Dartmouth Outing Club who are about to embark on a 50-mile trek; and local bookseller, Steve Smith, as he explores the roaring Cascade Trail and brings a bit of Waterville Valley history to life.
Willem’s days on the trail with the crew and his loyal four-legged sidekick Kiki give him comfort that all of this outdoor hiking is doing him good. “Kiki is usually with me, so I get to see my surroundings from two points of view: hers exploratory and high-speed — mine slow, noticing and reflective.”
This intrepid outdoorsman, who is brimming with knowledge about black flies, flora and fauna and who sings us long forgotten ditties, isn’t about to stop moving forward. But perhaps he’ll pause just a moment longer to revel in the scenery.
“I have one of the best jobs in television,” says Willem. “The only place I could find a home for these wonderful wild moments is on public television. It supports me and I support it with my annual membership.”
And as long as there are new places to explore, you can bet Willem will be on the trail.

COLLEGE BEHIND BARSNOVEMBER 25 & 26 | 9PM Executive producer Ken Burns presents College Behind Bars, a documentary directed by award-winning filmmaker Lynn Novick and produced by Sarah Botstein, that tells the story of a small group of
incarcerated men and women struggling to earn college degrees and turn their lives around in one of the most rigorous and effective prison education programs in the United States – the Bard Prison Initiative. Shot over four years in maximum and medium security prisons in New York State, the four-hour film takes viewers on a stark and intimate journey into one of the most pressing issues of our time – our failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the over two million Americans living behind bars. Through the personal
stories of the students and their families, the film reveals the transformative power of higher education and puts a human face on America’s criminal justice crisis. It raises questions we urgently need to address: What is prison for? Who has access to educational opportunity? Who among us is capable of academic excellence? How can we have justice without redemption?
