SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities:- To make

cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Why?

The world is becoming in-

creasingly urbanized.

Since 2007, more than

half the world’s population

has been living in cities,

and that share is projected

to rise to 60 per cent by

2030.

Cities and metropolitan ar-

eas are power- houses of

economic growth— con-

tributing about 60 per cent

of global GDP. However,

they also account for

about 70 per cent of global

carbon emissions and

over 60 per cent of re-

source use.

What are some of the most press-ing challenges that cities face to-day?

Inequality is a big concern. Over 1 billion people live in slums and this number keeps rising. The levels of urban energy consumption and pollution are also wor-rying. Cities occupy just 3 per cent of the Earth’s land, but account for 60-80 per cent of energy consumption and 70 per cent of carbon emissions. Many cities are also more vul-

nerable to climate change and natural disasters due to their high concentration of people and location so building urban resilience is crucial to avoid human, social and economic losses.

I live in a city but I’m not

affected by any of these

issues. Why should I care?

All these issues will eventually affect every citizen. Inequality can lead to unrest and insecu-rity, pollution deteriorates eve-ry- one’s health and affects workers’ productivity and therefore the economy, and natural disasters have the po-tential to disrupt everyone’s lifestyles.

What happens if cities

are just left to grow or-

ganically?

The cost of poorly planned ur-banization can be seen in some of the huge slums, tan-gled traffic, green- house gas emissions and sprawling sub-urbs all over the world. Slums are a drag on GDP, and lower life expectancy. By choosing to act sustainably we choose to build cities where all citi-zens live a decent quality of life, and form a part of the city’s productive dynamic, cre-ating shared prosperity and social stability without harming

the environment.

Is it expensive to put

sustainable practices in

place?

The cost is minimal in compar-ison with the benefits. For ex-ample, there is a cost to creat-ing a functional public transport network, but the ben-efits are huge in terms of eco-nomic activity, quality of life, the environment, and the over-all success of a networked city.

What can I do to help

achieve this goal?

Take an active interest in the governance and management of your city. Advocate for the kind of city you believe you need. Develop a vision for your building, street, and neighborhood, and act on that vision. Are there enough jobs? Can your children walk to school safely? Can you walk with your family at night? How far is the nearest public transport? What’s the air qual-ity like? What are your shared public spaces like? The better the conditions you create in your community, the greater the effect on quality of life. Global Youth Mobilization for Generation Disrupted

Y outh are the most im-portant and dynamic seg-

ment of the population in any country. It is believed that de-veloping countries with large youth population could see tremendous growth, provided they invest in young people’s education, health and protect and guarantee their rights. We can undoubtedly say that today’s young are tomorrow’s innovators, creators, builders and leaders.

During the Covid-19 pandem-ic all of us again are seeing the actions of the Young Peo-ple all over the world. In local communities around the world, young people are driv-ing change and contributing to the pandemic response and efforts through grassroots actions and voluntary service.

For the first time an alliance of the Big 6 Youth Organiza-tions (Young Men’s Chris-tian Association (YMCA); World Young Women’s

Christian Association (WYWCA); World Organiza-tion of the Scout Movement (WOSM); World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS); Interna-tional Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC); and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Inter-national Award ) are coming together around a Global Youth Mobilization to shine a spotlight on young people whose lives have been dis-rupted by the pandemic. More than 250 million young people contributed to the empower-ment of more than one billion young people during the last century in various communi-ties globally. The initiative was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Foun-dation.

The Global Youth Mobilization will focus on alleviating the negative consequences of the pandemic on young people,

while elevating the ideas, inge-nuity and innovation of young people working to respond to the global health crisis. The leadership of the WHO, Big 6 and youth organiza-tions around the world are calling on governments, busi-nesses and policy makers to back the Global Youth Mobi-lization effort and commit to invest in the future of young people. These measures will directly support young peo-ple engaged at the grass-roots level to tackle some of the most pressing health and societal challenges resulting from the pandemic. Big 6 will work with various steps from local to global level like - Youth Led Solution, Global Youth Summit, Advocacy and digital platform, In Coun-try Activation etc. We are looking forward for the best and being a member of the WOSM and WAGGGS the BSG, India should do its best effort to achieve the aims of the alliance of the Big6.
