3. 3. How They Form. Waterfalls form when melt water drops over theedge of a tabular iceberg or ice shelf. Waterfalls are commonly formed when a river isyoung. As the watercourse increases its velocity at the edgeof the waterfall, it takes material from the riverbed. Often over time, the waterfall will recede back toform a gorge downstream as it recedes upstream,and it will carve deeper into the ridge above it.

They also cause death for people, because sometimespeople slip or fall down the waterfall and when they fallthey die at the bottom. Waterfalls are like sandpaper to the base (floor). Theyscrape off the layer of for example rock. Very slowly thewater (rushing down from the top of the waterfall)scrapes off the base of the rock. The base gets smallerand smaller until there is nothing left.

Itswater plunges 3,212 feet (979 meters). Theres a waterfall in Minnesota where the waterdisappears into a hole and nobody knows where it goes. Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world and ismore than a mile long. Widest waterfall is Khone Falls stretch 6.7 miles (10.8kilometres) across the Mekong River, stopping river trafficat the Laos-Cambodia border.
