Why it´s not relevant?

NO ONE WANTS TO BE CALLED FAT - ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE DEDICATED TO BEING PHYSICALLY SUPREME.Yet some of Australia's finest athletes - according to the body mass index,

which is often used to measure if we are overweight - are technically unhealthy.

Olympian Anna Meares is tipped to win at least one cycling sprint gold medal in London.

Using the BMI, she's too heavy.

Fellow riders Shane Perkins and Scott Sunderland are gold prospects in the team sprint.

They, too, are overweight, says the BMI, as is marathon swimmer Ky Hurst and boxer Johan Linde.

Plainly, such findings say far more about the BMI measure than the health of the athletes.

For years, the worth of the BMI has been under question, mainly because it does not differentiate between muscle and fat.

By its measure, Hawthorn's Lance Franklin has been labelled "overweight", as has Brisbane's Jonathan Brown.

It's been argued that for non-athletes, who do not have high muscle mass, it is still a useful tool and starting point.

Yet the BMI seems far too easy to discredit.

Nor does it offer much motivation for those looking to shed kilos - from week to week, the measure tends to drop little despite the most intense of exercise and diet programs.

Perhaps it's time the BMI went the way of headbands and aerobics classes.
