Taiwan - Judging the Taiwan

International Orchid Show

2009

Taylor started growing orchids in 1971 after a trip to South Florida when her husband,

Frank, insisted on their buying two plants. "It was the beginning of a lifelong passion,

although I had to be dragged into it," says Taylor. "We have always grown paphs and

pleurothallids, but have some disagreements on how to allocate greenhouse space for

other genera. Now that they have moved to Philadelphia to be near granddaughters, they

have again begun to grow large cattleyas, which Frank loves, and cymbidiums, which are

a favorite of Taylor‟s. They required too much space in the Pittsburgh greenhouse . They

are also trying other genera, especially dendrochilums and bulbophyllums, which they

love for their complexity."

Taylor's interest in judging grew out of her other passion - learning and teaching about

art in museums. She believes her training in the appreciation of art helps her to recognize

the beauty in orchids. Taylor became an AOS-accredited judge in 1987, and was the

Chair of the National Capital Judging Center from 1999-2003. She serves at present as a

Trustee for the American Orchid Society. In March, 2009, she and Frank had the privi-

lege of being invited to judge the Taiwan International Orchid Show.

Finally, Fried Ba-nana Carmel Cheescake, which is rolled in a tortilla, deep fried and dusted with cinna-mon and sugar.

The cash bar (no credit cards) will be open all night featuring top shelf spirits, 8 beers on tap and several different wines. Tickets, as has been customary for the last several years, are $30 per person. Students are $15. We haven't charged gratuity in the past because it has been in restaurants and have passed a basket for the servers. A basket for a volun-tary gratuity will be passed at the end of the evening. The bar is not operated by Capoz-zoli Catering so you should tip your bartender accordingly if you so choose.
