The iPhone is driving innovation in mobile content:"Music has been the first 'killer app' for the operators to drive the consumption of premium content on the handset." Future iPhone / laptop hybrids?09.07 Apple applied to WIPO to patent a track pad that is translucent, touch sensitive on both sides and can be used as a displayeg: two-part, fold-up mobile phone:
•Open, one section would act as a track pad device with optional numeric keypad display.
•Closed, the input device would act as a translucent touch screen, displaying information from the screen underneath.
•A user could, for example, select an entry from phone's address book before opening the phone, which would initiate the call.
•The technology could turn a closed laptop into a Tablet PC-style device with a touch-sensitive screen.
•When the laptop is opened, the touch screen could function as a normal keyboard. Next Generation TV

What is Next Generation TV?
Building a global entertainment system that adopts the philosophies of the Internet as well as its technology.
Those principles are:•openness•freedom•neutrality•accessibility•global availability
The revolutionary change with IPTV is that every viewer has a personal relationship with a broadcaster through a transactional request/response mechanism, rather than just picking up a broadcast sent to anyone and everyone.

Todays three screen reality
•Broadcast is “broken”•Interruptive marketing a thing of the past•Consumers are now creating - they are content companies new critics and evangelists•Effect on advertising revenues, they’re moving online•There are over 3 billion IPTV-capable devices available in the world•Can IPTV replicate the Web 2.0 experience, and stimulate advertising revenues?
According to the EU, advertising revenueswill be mostly digital in two years:
“From an estimated €849m revenues in 2005, we expect newspaper and magazine publishers revenues to amount to €2bn in 2010,
almost exclusively from online and mobile advertising.”

The IPTV revolution
•Although it will not appear overnight, IP and transactional delivery will be the dominant method of broadcasting in 10 years. •The eventual goal of IPTV is to distribute live, stutter-free high-definition television (HD) over the backbone of the Internet rather than satellite, cable and terrestrial networks. •The promise of IPTV is that every piece of audio and/or visual content ever created in human history will be available in digital form anywhere in the world, on any device, whenever anyone wants it. •Digital media and our preferences for it will follow us wherever we go in the world, so rights will need to be allocated to an individual rather than a country and a platform. •All systems will feature centralised viewer database information and decentralised/local delivery equipment.

IPTV will...•forever change what the telcos are. The phone company of the past, the 800-pound gorilla, is dead. Long live the new phone company!•transform telcos from the market dominating gorillas they once were, to street fighting guerrillas, whether its cause or effect.•change the way applications are developed for television•force cable companies to evolve into more dynamic and responsive organisations•give rise to a new generation of video provider, on that is decentralised and flexible •open one of the last vestiges of the closed, legacy telco and cable service environment•create micro-markets of intense local competition in the US•achieve 9.6% of US IPTV market by 2011

Next Generation TVOisin Lunny 07.05.08www.interoute.com
It’s the IP in IPTV that’s important•IPTV content needs to be TV focussed, not a PC -> TV clone. IPTV currently has little to significantly differentiate it from cable and satellite.•This is due to the technology ecosystem being relatively new•IPTV requires new technology in:
•access networks•compression•middleware•customer premises equipment (CPE)•and... it all has to work together
•As these technologies mature, IPTV operators will be able to take advantage of the inherent opportunities presented by an IP based infrastructure•Key factors:
•bandwidth delivered to each user•ability of middleware to act as an application development environment

Recommendations for IPTV providers
•Keep changing marketing tactics•Plan ahead and raise prices gradually
•IPTV should not suddenly charge more for the same content - need to add value with applications that can be deployed quickly due to the IP based infrastructure •Middleware and bandwidth will differentiate IPTV from cable, the better the connection, the more advanced the applications can be
•Build out advanced services such as DVRs and VoD, and promote their use
•Focus on HD VoD content•Teach consumers how to use advanced services•Leverage the flexibility of IP to extend services to mobile platforms•Stop relying on third-party broadband portals
Next Generation TVOisin Lunny 07.05.08www.interoute.com
*Source: From Gorillas to Guerillas - IPTV changes everything Yankee Group 2008
Recommendations for Cable Operators
•Decentralise the control structure and move marketing power to the edge•Accelerate network upgrades - FTTH providers defining Internet Access and HD content as the early weapon of choice•Embrace open environments as an asset, not a threat•Treat the entire home as your domain•Improve customer service•Augment user interaction eg: UGC•Bundle equipment with contracts and promote its use•Invest in cross platform applications e.g. on TV caller display - increases stickiness for the end users

Content control - API
In addition to the web-based console, clients can use the Media Manager “Workflow Gateway” API for FTP file ingestion and platform control. Our Workflow Gateway is a tool for bulk uploading of content to the Interoute Extra and Media Manager plat forms for g lobal distribution. We supply a set of delivery instructions which can be i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t o o u r clients digital workflows exactly how they want them to be by using an openly published XML schema.
Next Generation TVOisin Lunny 07.05.08www.interoute.com
Interface connection - SOAP
All of the features of the Media Manager content platform are a v a i l a b l e t h r o u g h a S O A P webservice. The SOAP webservice enables our clients to control every aspect and platform feature directly from their own applications.
The concept is simple, we supply our clients with a number of developer friendly SOAP operations with request and response code snippets. They can copy and paste these into their own webpages and workf lows, adding their own account specific details.
With this SOAP webservice code in place, their platform can be the sole end-user interface, in whatever layout and language they choose, but the delivery infrastructure will be provided by Interoute.
Two way control with SOAP webservices
Next Generation TVOisin Lunny 07.05.08www.interoute.com
Content control - transcoding
Our clients can use our Workflow Gateway API to directly access the upload, content ingest ion and transcoding capabilities of Interoute’s platform.
There are two Direct Linking URL structures; one for Flash S t reaming , and one fo r everything else. By using the Workflow Gateway API, clients can set the ContentID in advance, enabling them to predict the URL by using our Direct Linking URL structure.
Transcoding is accessed at the same time by invoking the appropr ia te t ranscoding profiles through the Workflow Gateway API. There are a n u m b e r o f p r e - d e f i n e d template profiles available, or we can create them to suit our client’s requirements.
Media Manager transcoding, accessed through our API

•Content will always be king. •Effective content delivery networks are key.•Video quality is crucial.•Converged service delivery is crucial.•SOA (service oriented architectures) important for networks.•DRM Keys - a centrally held identity will manage the relationship between individuals and content.•Content will originate and be distributed “from the centre” but can live “on the edge” of networks using P2P for the “last mile”.•Routing the user to the content will be the opportunity.•Relationships between domain identities will be managed by Web 2.0 companies, while laptops / iPods / slingboxes can hold local identity caches.
