DANCE TEAM

The Louisville Male Dance Team got their season off to a great start with a 1st place win in the hip hop division at the World Spirit Association National Championships held at the Louisville International Convention Center. The team recieved a first place banner and National Championship jackets. The team kept the momentum going by winning the Large Hip Hop division at the LIT and receiving the Grand Champion award for the highest score of all hip hop routines performed that day. The team was also blessed with an outstanding achievement at the LIT competition by being named the first ever Mega Grand Champion of the event. The team received the award for having the highest score of any team over all of the dance divisions in the competition that day.

The team received an invitation to compete in the Kentucky State Dance Team Championships, three championship banners and the Mega Grand Champion trophy which has been engraved with the dance team’s name. The trophy will be displayed at the school for one year. The dance team competed in the Kentucky State Dance Team Competition on February 20, 2016. The team placed second in the state in the very competitive Large Pom Division.

The coaching staff is proud to say that the Louisville Male Dance Team is the 2016 Kentucky State Large Hip Hop Champions and were also named Grand Champion of the entire event! The win at state propels the team to set even higher goals for the upcoming season. But most of all our win at state means that all of the hard work, dedication, and determination to perform with intensity as a team, was noticed and rewarded. Sheryl Knight ‘90 & Ainsley Thompson, the coaches, told the team all season-- “perform to be memorable and the rest would fall into place”. That is what this group of young ladies has done. Everyone is extremely proud of the efforts and successes our team has had the entire season.

Louisville Male High School is one of the best schools in the state. Academically Male High School rates with the top five schools. Everyone knows by this time about the football team. The team went 15/0 and won the class six A state championship.

Wow, what a year we have had so far! Our football team was undefeated and state champion, our dance team was state champion. We have a state champion wrestler, and our basketball teams have been doing a fantastic job. Both the girls and boys had very successful seasons. Spring sports are underway and we believe we will compete for state championships this spring! Our students are the absolute best!

When our scores for the state accountability system came back, we continue to show that we score at the distinction level, in the 99th percentile, which is the highest category. Each year it gets hard and harder to stay at or near the top, but you would be proud of our staff and our families for the effort they put in. I think the old saying, “Anyone can, but Male does!” is appropriate, as we look at all of our programs both academic and extra-curricular.

What is hard for me to believe is that I have really only been here for a year as principal. I love being part of what is going on at this great school. Some of the current projects include renovation of the cafeteria, lights outside, locker-room work, painting the hallways, and moving to the lower level of Gheens where we have an additional nine classrooms. So, for the first time in a long time, we do not have teachers moving from room to room on carts, which is very important. The support of our alumni association and Ms. Day have been a great help and we wouldn’t be able to do these things without your support.

As I close, I want you to know that Male High School is in a great place and poised to continue to keep moving forward. There was a song in 1986 titled, The Future’s so Bright, and the lyrics include, “Things are going great and they’re only getting better... The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades!” That’s where we are at Male High School – things are great, and the future is very bright! Thank you for all you do.

Vincel Anthony ‘85 and his Mom came to the Alumni Room after Vincel spoke. It was so great to see him and Brenda. They are really MALE people. Vincel was such a great athlete and his Mom was always here to support him. He is also a great person. Vincel is going to work with Young Men’s at Male.

Vic Montgomery about scared me to death when I heard he had a stroke. He has recovered and he came to a Male basketball game. Another great Bulldog with a Mother (Bertha String Southerling) who always supported him at Male. He’s back in Washington where he works at the Pentagon and does refereeing on the side.

I am so grateful to Garnett Phelps ‘65 who is going to head up the BIGGEST FOOTBALL REUNION AND COOKOUT IN HISTORY Kirk Day is going to be working on the cooking.

Ted Boehm, past principal, is head of a breakfast we are planning for all alumni. Hope to have several hundred come and eat some great food and have great fellowship.

George Mercker ‘50 is working with Dr. Jury to have Hall of Fame members come back and speak to our students. We want them to find out what early Male is about.

Ainsley Thompson, adopted alum of Male (and my daughter), and Sheryl Knight ‘90 have won Mega Champion at the LIT and Grand Champion at the state championship.

We took a bus to Bowling Green to see the State Championship and we all had a ball on the bus and at the game. Our side sang “Dear Ole High School”. So proud of how our bulldogs act at games.

Be sure to read about all our sports teams and how much they have accomplished. UofL may have Tom Jurich, but we have JOHN KELSEY, the greatest AD in the country.

GHOSTS OF OLD MALE HIGH SCHOOLExcerpt from GHOST OF OLD LOUISVILLE by David Domine(copyright 2005) Across the street from the former Johnson residence, the site of Victorian Louisville’s most heinous crime, sits Old Male High School, a majestic 1914 structure that fortunately survived several recent short sighted attempts to bulldoze it. However, it seems that when the lights go down in this local landmark, the building takes on a life of its own. A laborer who stayed late one night to complete some renovation work claims he turned off every light in the enormous building before he locked up and ran to his car in the parking lot. But he says his heart almost jumped up in his throat when he pulled out onto the street in front of the old school and saw every single window ablaze with light. He ran back inside and spent ten minutes turning out lights. When he entered the large auditorium the last part of the building he needed to turn off - he claims he saw a strange man staring down at him from the interior balcony He faded away into nothingness after a few seconds. When the disturbed worker left the second time, he made sure he drove out a back way so he wouldn’t have to pass in front of the school. Several people claim they have heard mysterious groans late at night when they were the only people in the building, and they agree that it didn’t sound like pipes or anything else mechanical that can sometimes be blamed. Some have attributed the strange noises to the ghost of Jennie Bowman, the young servant girl who was brutally attacked across the street in the late 1880s, but the spirit of a former student apparently survives as well. An old school legend claims that a former student beaten to death by his father

in the 1920s still walks the hallowed halls of the imposing structure. Marie Sandoval worked for a child care center housed in the old schoolhouse and she claims to have received a disturbing visit from the unfortunate boy one night. “We were usually closed and gone by 6:30 P.M. But one night I went home and realized I had left my purse behind. My husband and I had gone out for dinner and we stopped on the way home so I could get it.” Marie recalls the exact time she entered the building to retrieve her bag that evening. “It was exactly ten after ten, and it was really dark and spooky outside, I ran to my desk and got my purse from the drawer, and as I was reaching for my keys I looked up and saw this little boy looking at me.” At first Sandoval was overcome with fear that a child had been left behind at the daycare center, but when she got a closer look at the boy she realized that wasn’t the case. “I saw his face was all bruised, and there was blood all over his head and on his hands. He was ghastly pale and almost blue. I just shrieked and ran out of the building to husband in the car. He didn’t believe me and said I had drunk too much at dinner.” But at work the following Monday, Marie says she shared her story with a coworker who had had a similar experience and described the same apparition. Several other individuals in the Old Male High School claim that they have witnessed paranormal activity in certain parts of the building, including levitating objects, unexplained cold spots, and loud moans and sobs. Could they be the sobs of a young boy beaten to death by his father many years ago? Could they be the sad moans of a poor servant girl who died in agony in the late 1880s? Many neighborhood residents feel that these are secrets only the Old Male High School can tell.

Contrary to what many people believe, idleness is an exacting science, demanding much time and study on the part of the would-be idler. A master of the art of idleness can well be proud of himself, for he has an opportunity that few others will ever have, to enjoy life. Those skeptical people who degrade idleness do so only because they have never had the opportunity to enjoy it themselves.

Idleness is beneficial for several reasons. Its chief advantage lies in developing physical and mental well-being. The body is never dangerously overworked. A true idler plans and organizes every detail of his time, thus promoting the efficiency of his mind. A person really interested in becoming a proficient idler find his time so completely occupied that he has not a minute to run around saying and doing things that might rouse the ire of others.

Idleness also develops a person’s initiative, because he gets out of it only what he puts into it. There is nothing more satisfying than time well spent in idleness. In conclusion, I say that idleness is profitable to more people than just the idler. The idler becomes so engrossed with his occupation that he has no time to make himself a burden on others. This is the greatest virtue of idleness.

LACROSSE

The Male High School Boys Lacrosse team is returning a strong core of 9 seniors. We are looking at this season to be one of the most promising in the history of the team. We have high expectations for ourselves and we hope our success will help draw out more and more Male High School fans. Also a congratulations to midfielder Kris Stone on committing to play Div III lacrosse at Transylvania University.

TEAM ON THE RISE

Louisville Male Boys Soccer was led this fall by, first year coaches and Male Alumni, Head Coach Daniel Anderson ‘96 and Assistant Coach John Seewer ‘11. Our goal this season was to establish a great work ethic, respect for our opponents, and reflect the values of our great school. The Boys’ team had adversity pop up around every corner: injuries, limited availability of players, to even a four hour bus break down on the highway. In the end, we always moved forward and the players played their hearts out.

On the field, the Bulldogs struggled at times against more established opponents. But, we continued to grow. After knocking off #1 State, #7 Nationally Ranked Trinity, the Rocks only regular season defeat, our progress was starting to show. We logged the toughest schedule for 2015 season, playing 9 of the top 10 teams in the state. Our final loss came in a tough match with Collegiate where we had many chances on goal, but could not find the back of the net. We bid farewell to the only senior class at Male in the last 15 years to beat St.X and Trinity in back to back years. The Bulldogs will return 16 players with varsity experience next season. The future looks good. To all alumni, Boys Soccer has started an ALUMNI Night tradition. We had over 40 players and coaches return last year. All former players, please come out next season and support your current Bulldogs.

SOFTBALL

The 2016 Softball team is once again one of the top teams in the state of Kentucky. With a State Runner-Up finish in 2015, this year’s team is working hard to conquer that last hurdle and bring home the school’s 1st state championship. While many schools would have to rebuild after losing seven seniors that all contributed at the varsity, this year’s team is loaded with talent that should continue the success of the program. The softball program prides itself on hard work, toughness, and playing the best competition possible. This season we will be competing against top teams from the states of Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Alabama, and Florida. With the goal of a 4th straight regional championship and a trip to the state tournament, we look forward to the challenges ahead.

We want to thank the Alumni Association for all their support in making our facilities the best they can be. Your support has increased the level of pride within the program and we are extremely grateful!

GIRLS GOLF LMHS had just enough players (4) to make a team, one of which was an 8th grader.

They still managed to produce a 9-1 record with junior Faythe Turner leading the way with team’s lowest scoring average.

VOLLEYBALL

The Volleyball team, led by all region player and Captain Lexie Gatewood, wrapped up the 2015 season with a 19-19 record. Seniors Jordan Horne, Audrey Jarboe, Madison Peyton, and Ashley Wheatley guided the team to a second place finish in the District and a runner up finish in the JCPS volleyball tournament. Freshman Brenna Valsted and Camryn Rich were key freshman contributors and earned all-district awards.

Junior Megan Soloman along with Sophomores Hallie Osborne and Jennie Malone took home our Bulldog awards for the 2015 season. This award is given to the players. The best exemplify what a Bulldog volleyball player should be on and off the court. The most outstanding players for the 2015 season were Camryn Rich (freshman), Caroline Tino (Junior Varsity) and Lexi Gatewood (Varsity).

CHEERLEADERS

The 2015/16 Male H.S. cheerleaders went to UCA cheer camp. We got Blue Superior Ribbons and the spirit stick all four days we were evaluated. This allowed us to be invite to the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl and perform pre-game. We qualified for UCA Nationals. We were the camp champions for the Extreme routine 1st place out of 6 large varsity teams. We also were selected by the other 35 teams to receive the Leadership Plaque for the entire camp. Three girls made All American and 2 of them (Cierra Isom, Madison Olhmann) attended the London New Years Day Parade. We received 1st at the 7th regionals in the super large division. This advanced us to KHSAA State. We received 3rd in the State out of 15 Super large teams. Our competition season was finished off with 1st in super large division at the LIT competition.

The Male cheerleaders worked in the community by volunteering at the diabetes walk. They helped keep people motivated

by staying healthy and stoping diabetes. They also volunteered to get two elementary schools (Okolona & Price) cheer programs started. The Male H.S. cheerleaders made all these accomplishments while simultaneously cheering in support of the football team and girls/boys basketball. We will continue the Male Pride in the cheer Program and it is always great to be a Bulldog!

PATRICIA TOWELL MARTIN ’56 teaches at White Oak Senior Center in Silver Spring, MD, and helps about 990 seniors from all over the world continue with their life in USA. Her grandson, Nick Donner, is Captain on American Airlines and Chase Donner received his MBA from Emory in Atlanta & proposed to his girlfriend, Callie. They will marry in October in Lexington. Their sister, Amelia Higdon is expecting my first great grandchild in June 2016.

ALEX MACKEY ’09 married Katelyn Blandford (Owensboro Catholic) on September 26, 2015. They both graduated from UK in 2013. Alex works for UK in the Enrollment Management Department as the Interactive Communications Specialist.

CLASS OF 2016 BURIED FOOTBALL

Class of 2016To the significance of the buried football. We buried the football to speak things into existence. A State Championship. We came together as a brotherhood and said our time being here we will get a championship before we leave. We did it. It was buried with all the players names on the football. With all the memories we will come to reminisce when we unearth the football. We came to a conclusion we would unearth the football when we won a State Championship. The football was buried on the practice field next to the equipment shed. It came about because of the extraordinary talent and poise from the Class. No doubt that Class of 2016 was going to be remarkable!

Say the least, the football is a piece of history that will be cherished forever. This football is a complete symbol of our season, in a nutshell. A definition of great tradition, Male pride, and the Love we have for the game. Thanks Male for the great opportunity! Love forever from the Class of 2016. Peace and blessings. Go Bulldogs for Life!

What the football means to 2016. After completing the first undefeated freshman season in years, the Class of 2016 got together with an assistant coach, Coach Brewer, and decided we were going to make more history before leaving Male High School as graduates.

So the class of 2016 all signed a football and dug a hole in the practice field. We buried that football and placed a brick on top as the head stone. We promised that we would dig up the football once we became State Champions. Nobody knew about the goal we had set for ourselves. We used that football as motivation and that we began our legacy as Male High School’s most memorable class to play football. Breaking records, ending streaks, defeating rivals and private schools, power houses and winning a state championship.

That football was the base of our success and it will forever be remembered along with the class of 2016.
