A better term for a sensor is a transducer. A transducer is any physical device that converts one form of energy into another.

An Actuator takes an electrical input and turns it into physical action. For instance, an electric motor, a hydraulic system, and a pneumatic system are all different types of actuators.

An IoT gateway device bridges the communication gap between IoT devices, sensors, equipment, systems and the cloud.

An IoT gateway performs several critical functions from translating protocols to encrypting, processing, managing and filtering data.
