CRANBERRY PICKINGPaul Bruce, InstructorTake a short walk over easy terrain through a handsome white pine forest, enter a low- lying forest, arrive at a cranberry bog hidden away in this pastoral landscape, and then it’s down to business. Pick as many organ-ic, wild cranberries as you like, including Early Blacks, Antique Howes, and larger MacFarlanes, and gather some smoke grass for flower arranging if you’d like. You’ll find endless beauty and nature to admire and harvest in this 60-year-old cranberry bog/meadow. Bring a camera (in case we en-counter wildlife and migrating birds), and a container for the berries. Wear sturdy shoes (boots would be best), a hat, and bug spray. Class takes place rain or shine. Directions will be sent to enrolled students. For kids of all ages with an adult.

CRAB CATCHING ADVENTUREPaul Bruce, InstructorBait a few traps, drop them into the water, and haul them out ten minutes later. Will you capture “king” or “queen” crabs, green crabs, or something else? Maybe you’ll catch a lobster! You just never know what will come up in a crab trap, but it’s always an ad-venture. This is a spot known for migrating water fowl—we may even catch a glimpse of Chumly the Seal. Bring a container for your catch, as you probably won’t want to use your pockets. Class takes place rain or shine; please plan ahead and dress appropriately for the weather. Directions will be emailed to enrolled students. For kids of all ages with an adult.

DUCKYBOTS: TURN RUBBER DUCKS INTO ROBOTS!Kevin Osborn, InstructorLet’s get those lazy rubber ducks to move! Your job is to imagine and then build a propulsion system for a rubber duck. Along the way, you’ll accidentally learn a bit about engineering, physics, problem solving, and teamwork. With simple instructions and supplies of ducks, duct tape, and motors, you’ll engineer your unique duckybot to test out and race. If you’d like to take it home, bring $10 payable to the instructor at the beginning of class; otherwise your ducky will be returned to the flock. For kids ages 7 and up with an adult (one child per adult please).

LANGUAGE CLUBSIES National Language Foundation staff, InstructorsHola! Bonjour! Ciao! Ni hao! Learn Spanish, French, Italian, or Chinese in a fun and engaging atmosphere. Through games, songs, and drama, you’ll get a feel for the language you’re learning and its culture. Just as you learned your first language, we use a natural immersion approach to get you comfortable with basic commu-nication skills in your new one. Our classes are divided by age, but ad-vanced younger language enthusiasts are welcome to join classes with their older peers, and older students are free to join a younger group. We provide books and CDs for listening at home. Enrollment is for the entire year (26 weeks), and classes are offered at ele-mentary schools throughout Newton. Please check our website for the com-plete list. These classes are coordinat-ed by Joanna Hooley, who has been running after-school language classes for NCE for many years; for detailed information about course content, please contact Joanna Hooley at 617-363-9450 or [email protected].

NCE/NAA YOUTH BASKETBALL NCE is happy to continue its partnership with the Newton Athletic Association (NAA), Newton’s largest youth basketball program. Leagues are for players in grades 3–12, and our program is open to all players regardless of ability or experience. (High school JV or varsity players may not participate.) Though boys are in the majority, girls are welcome to play in all leagues. A mandatory evaluation clinic is held in late October to assist in creating balanced teams for all leagues.

Practices are one night per week (Monday–Thursday and possibly Sunday) beginning in November and running through early March. Teams play 10 to 12 games on Saturdays and/or Sundays. The number of games, when and where they are played, and practice locations, may vary by grade level. League information and online registration will be available on September 3. See www. naabasketball.org for more details.
