Customer Relations & Satisfaction SurveysCPT’s qual i ty pol icy is to place customers f i rs t ,

enforce participation from all employees, and eliminate all shortcomings. CPT’s ceaseless self discipline and growth provides customers with the most competitive and high quality products, as well as the fastest service to satisfy customer demands. To account for different requirements for customers across the world, CPT provides displays, laptops, and medium and small specialty products. At the same time, CPT has also created maintenance and service centers in European, North American, and Asian locations to provide customers with timely post-sale service.

CPT uses its customer satisfaction surveys as references for enhancing customer service, product quality, and any necessary adjustments to competition strategy. CPT’s customer satisfaction surveys are conducted biannually, and investigates the five major aspects of “customer service,” “quality,” “technological developments,” “schedules & costs,” and “HSF restricted

materials.” Overall indicators from customer satisfaction statistics are reviewed in annual operational management evaluation meetings, where they are comprehensively assessed and compared with corporate benchmarks for trend comparisons to act as reference data for CPT’s short tern business plans.

Customer Privacy Protection

To protect customer privacy, CPT’s relevant departments will discuss and formulate privacy strategies and policies that fulfill the requirements of each department for private documents according to practical needs. For CPT’s upstream and downstream contractors, periodical bulletins and communication systems are in place. Internally, CPT executes measures such as internal and external audits and specialized task force management, and standardizes response and processes for when confidential documents or technologies have been leaked. Industry-Academic Cooperation PlanCPT carries out a series of “Fun Electronics Seminars”

annually for school campuses, to introduce students on technological education, and also develop future technological talents, so as to ensure sustainable development for the optoelectronics industry. The seminars not only involve outstanding and enthusiastic CPT elites sharing their professional knowledge with school campuses, students can also arrange to experience display disassembly for themselves.

CPT’s long term arrangements for industry-academic cooperation plans cover process management, material development, process development, product development, etc., all of which are gradually coming to fruition. In terms of patents, CPT has accumulated as many as 267 patent applications between 2004 and 2010 in its industry-academic cooperative research projects with Tatung University, National Chiao Tung University, and other universities. 179 patents had been publicized, and 37 patents had been successfully certified.

In terms of dissertations, outstanding performance was also witnessed in industry-academic dissertations for 2010. 300 professional dissertations were published. The National Science Council’s three-year industry-academic cooperation project with major schools and CPT’s own industry-academic project will continue to enhance cooperation and consolidation over forward-looking technologies with domestic academic communities in hopes of continuing to combine industrial, governmental, and academic resources and capacities, and create more comprehensive technological arrangements.

Completion of Carbon Footprint Certification for 15.6” LCDCPT announced tha t “product carbon footpr in t”

certifications for the 15.6 inch LCD display are complete. CPT observes global carbon footprint standards, and uses SimaPro, a life cycle assessment (LCA) software, to conduct carbon footprint investigations for the 15.6 inch laptop display. Third party verification and certification was completed through cooperation with Foundation of Taiwan Industry Service and SGS Taiwan Limited.

Since March 2010, CPT’s relevant internal departments had been planning and executing “product carbon footprint” certification work. After approximately 8 months of work during the project, over 20 task force members, over 200 task force meetings, and investigations, visits, and verifications with cooperation from almost 20 suppliers, the process and data for the “greenhouse gas emission during product life cycle” for the LCD had been fully revealed, thus completing the “product carbon footprint” certification for the 15.6 inch LCD. The entire product process, from raw materials, manufacturing, assembly and transportation, to customer delivery, had all been incorporated into calculation parameters. Through quantified carbon footprint indicators, future CPT customers can more clearly reveal to consumers the magnitude of environmental impact from the products they use. CPT plans to be an industry leader in initiating product carbon reduction policies in 2011.

Refinement in 21” CRT Deflection

CPT’s Malaysia plant had successfully produced 21 inch super short tubes, whose high voltage design was reduced from 23kV to 20kV. Also, its deflection yoke incorporated pin-free designs, as well as designs that eliminated field control coils and balance coils.

As global metallic raw material price increased, price of copper had risen to US$9,500/ton, while aluminum is only US$2,500/ton. Therefore, replacing the copper wire ring of the deflection yoke with aluminum versions is now mainstream practice, which also reduces overall weight by 10~13%. Anti-corrosion technologies are also introduced, where the positioning needle is wrapped around with silicon rubber.

Customer: Samsung

Yan Sai Liu Assistant Manager, Taiwan Samsung Ltd.Bring a Successful Hidden Hand

CPT’s cooperation with Samsung in the LCD field began in 2003, which provided immense support and assistance for Samsung in terms of new product development, technological exchange, and quality and service. Furthermore, CPT capitalized on its own mass production advantage to reduce costs and its acute awareness of market information to provide policy orientations, which greatly enhanced Samsung’s competitiveness in the unusually competitive electronics industry.Samsung was created in 1969, and became a world leader in the global high-tech industry in 42 years. It has 185 offices in 65 nations in the world, and accommodates as many as 187,000 employees across the world, producing revenues as high as US$138.858 billion in 2010. Such distinguished growth and performance on the Samsung’s part is not only enabled by its own continuous investment in its brand and technologies, one of the most important factors is the support and cooperation from its suppliers. In particular, being world’s first and foremost brand in LCD TVs and monitors, a stable display supply is a critical condition of success for Samsung, and CPT is precisely the hidden hand that drives Samsung to success.

Customer: TPV Technology Limited

Xuchang Yang, Senior LCD Screen Procurement Division Director, TPV Technology LimitedThe Most Important Cooperative Partner

To maintain corporate competitiveness, strong logistical support is required. Mere competition strategies are hardly sufficient in the every-changing optoelectronics industry. The establishment of supply partnership relations and networks are particularly important keys to corporate success. TPV and CTP’s cooperation

began in display tubes during the earliest days, with CPT consistently acting in the role of product development assistance, and grew with our company until today. CPT not only provides outstanding products and post-sale services, they also provide market information and technological trends to help TPV design, research, and develop new products. Also, CPT possesses the advantage of effective cost control and mass production, which can increase TPV’s product competition advantages, and also fulfill market demands. Currently, TPV is the world’s largest manufacturer of surveillance equipments, with significant market share in China. CPT’s assistance is truly invaluable.

Vice President, Hong-Tien YuCPT, as a company, is emphatic about relationships. It engages in a wide range of cooperation in the industry, and maintains positive

interactive relationships with Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese companies, and even their own “colleagues.” Because of CPT’s cultural characteristics, they are more likely to acquire concessions when cooperating with their partners. This is advantageous for resource integration, where all parties can capitalize on their specializations. For example, CPT still maintains cooperative relationships with its original technology transfer company, Mitsubishi.

As important as cooperation is, establishing one’s own capabilities is an even more long term endeavor. CPT had been in the display industry for a long time, and its primary partners still exist. Therefore, CPT can maintain competitiveness in terms of intelligence gathering and experience retention. Most of CPT’s technological foundation is self made, with infrequent use of external personnel. After all, every company espouses different cultures, and external personnel need considerable time to be conditioned to those cultures.

Running an industry not only requires design capabilities, it also includes plant operation, protection of production and sales channels, control over raw materials, etc. production plans need to retain high flexibility in order to instantaneously account for chances in customer orders. Tablet PCs present competition and opportunities. The prevalence of Tablet PCs requires a multitude of coordination between software and hardware manufacturers. The best results can only be achieved by interdisciplinary fusion. To CPT’s which places particular emphasis on inter-industry cooperation, this commitment will be an advantage.

Stakeholders’ Voice

CPT listens to the voice of its customers and maintains positive interactive relationships. Long term partnership relationships are difficult to establish, and customer recognition for CPT’s work is even more invaluable.

2010 International Display Product Innovation EvaluationCPT is an award winner of the 2010 international green

display product innovation evaluation. The 215FA04 was the CPT product evaluated in the event. Its innovative vision focused on three major characteristics of green products. First is BL energy conservation. Blacklight power consumption for normal black screens was consistently 14W. Blacklight power consumption for black screens with light sensors can be reduced from 14W to 1W without compromising image quality. The B/L Power saving is 57.5% (Max.). The second characteristic is IC material conservation → waste reduction. The third characteristic is paper material weight reduction → energy conservation and carbon reduction during transportation. The green packaging design concept can: 1) reduce paper material usage for transportation, while intensive use of recycled paper (paper-based raw materials) can reduce deforestation; 2) eliminate the need for internal insulation paper board materials so that the gap between cartridges can be adjusted to accommodate 11 pieces instead of the 10-piece display capacity of the original cardboard box. The use of paper plastic cardboard boxes reduces cardboard box usage, increases cargo usage, and reduces cargo loading frequencies. These benefits can reduce annual carbon emissions by: 13.15 tons.

2010 EPA Green Packaging Design Double AwardCPT’s paper plastic tray dish packaging design for displays

won the outstanding green packaging design award and the media award from the EPA.

CPT’s paper plastic tray dish package is based on the concept of green design, which uses 100% recycled paper pulp. Compared to traditional cardboard boxes for displays, the design penetrates tradition by not using outer boxes, and only uses upper and lower caps stuffed with paper plastic tray dishes, this design greatly reduces paper material usage and packaging costs. Packaging designs with no outer box can also be adjusted according to the number of displays accommodated, if needed. Storage of product pieces can be increased to decrease storage space and increase transportation and loading efficiency. Paper plastic tray dish packages for displays can reduce the volume of cardboard boxes by 40% per box. Paper plastic tray dishes and upper and lower caps are all made from 100% recycled paper pulp, without the need for outer boxes, reinforcement materials, and insulation boards, which reduces environmental impact and packaging costs. The upper and lower caps and paper plastic tray dishes can all be recycled and reused. Paper plastic tray dish packaging boxes for displays can be reused 3 times or more, and after usage, they can be recycled into recycled paper or other environmental applications. Waste cardboard boxes can also be converted into paper pulp and applied into other recycled paper. Eliminating the need for adhesive tapes greatly increases recycling efficiency for packaging materials.

“Voluntary Packaging Reduction” Signed with EPASince late 2009, CPT and four other display and laptop

companies (including AU Optronics, Chimei Innolux Corporation, BenQ Corporation, and ASUS TeK Computer Inc. had signed a packaging reduction agreement with the Executive Yuan. In February 2011, after the results from the 2010 packaging reduction agreement were announced by the Executive Yuan, CPT and other participating companies signed another packaging reduction agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency. It is estimated that, among the 15 products from 11 companies that were part of the agreement in 2011, 600 tons or more of packaging waste would be reduced each year.

In the 2011 agreement, 17 inch LCD packaging cardboard boxes were approved for packaging reduction. CPT’s design concepts replaced the traditionally used cardboard and EPE bags, and adopted large amounts of recycled paper plastic cardboard boxes with improved design. Not only does this measure increase load capacity and reduce loading frequency (it is estimated that approximately 6 tons of CO2 emissions can be reduced yearly when transporting this product), it can also reduce recycled paper usage (it is estimated that recycled paper usage can be reduced by 220 tons, which can reduce CO2 emissions by 54 tons yearly when transporting this product).

According to production capacity estimates, for the packaging cardboard boxes of this type of 17 inch display, energy conservation and carbon reduction results amount to 60 tons of annual CO2 emission reductions according to cardboard box and energy expenditure calculations.

M a t e r i a l U s a g e R e d u c t i o n a n d Packaging Design Refinement for CRTIn the push for clean production during the manufacturing

process, cleanliness control through raw material (Mask / Frame / IS) insertion was adopted to reduce the use of auxiliary materials, which further canceled the original cleaning procedures. In other words, cleaning fluids are not required. Not only is cleaning solution conserved, it also indirectly achieves environmental protection objectives. Also, materials are refined for the 14 inch and 21 inch electronic gun design, where simplification of parts can reduce material usage, realizing the application of source reduction design concepts in the manufacturing production process.

To effectively increase CRT load delivery capacity, the Malaysian plant has currently revised the Styrofoam packaging design for 14 inch CRT tubes, which increases load capacity by 6.25%. Each freight can add a maximum of 144 pieces, which effectively reduces packaging material and carbon emissions.

Corporate Social Responsibility Report44

To realize its corporate social responsibility and reduce the environmental impacts of waste fluid produced during the manufacturing process, parts of the solutions used in the TFT display manufacturing process is released after being processed by contractors approved by the Environmental Protection Agency or CPT’s own wastewater treatment system. For recyclable and reusable solutions like stripper solutions, light resistance dilution fluids, chromium etching fluids, aluminum etching fluids, NMP, hydrofluoric acids, etc., such waste fluids are recycled by their original suppliers, converted back to industrial or electronic grades, and then resupplied back to the TFT-LCD manufacturing process to reuse. Waste in all plant areas are turned into resources / recycled and reused wherever possible.

In 2010, the Yangmei plant altered the manufacturing process to improve and extend fluid exchange intervals, and successfully extended the lifetime of fluids to reduce display fluid usage by 23%. Through management method improvements to rework base board solution consumption, heavy industrial fluid consumption for ITO and RGB glass were reduced by 60% and 58%, respectively. CPT’s effort to reduce waste by reducing chemical usage at the source is indicative of CPT taking the best actions to protect the environment.

Improvement Measures and Expected Benefits in 2010

Innova t i ve En t repreneursh ip CompetitionCPT began introducing and promoting “knowledge-based

management and innovation plans” from November 2008, a program that was led by CPT’s General Manager. The position of “Knowledge Chief” is established directly under the General Manager as the project administrator, as well as the core unit – “Knowledge Promotion Office.” One representative is then appointed by each functional department by the “High Navigator” to act as knowledge management seed personnel for each department. In 2009, the “Three Pillars of KM” – knowledge database, knowledge social group, and Yellow Pages of experts – were created specifically for CPT, which will engage in knowledge audits and management and maintenance of valuable documents for CPT’s existing information and knowledge documents, and also simultaneously establish knowledge social group platforms, inspire the work habits of knowledge sharing and exchange among coworkers, and thus initiate the development of a culture of knowledge sharing and exchange.

In 2010, the Knowledge Promotion Office further held the first “Innovative Entrepreneurship Competition” with “innovation” as the core theme. A total of 22 teams (approximately 90 people in total) applied for the event. The enthusiastic participation is indicative of CPT’s tireless culture of innovation. The competition featured two workshop courses. Because many teams contained members who were originally research, development, or manufacturing professionals, they tended to lack marketing and sales concepts. Through entrepreneurial planning, participants gained a deeper understanding of the conditions and resources required for corporate operation. Furthermore, during the competition, group discussions were able to uncover problems, focus on every possibility of innovation, and encourage more objective thinking.

During the competition process, internal and external experts were invited to conduct the first stage of evaluations. The second stage of evaluations involved interviews by the I2C committee (innovation development), comprised of first class management. Finally, six teams (for a total of 52 people) entered the final competition, and the first and second place winners of the innovation team and entrepreneurship team were elected by popular vote.

Case of Innovation in Green Manufacturing Process

Solvent-Free Repair Fluid

Product Development Division of the Yangmei PlantMembers: Fengjin Tang, Wenteng Zhang, Jiapin Yu, Yipeng Guo, Xiuxue ZhangInstructor: Wenren Xie

Perennially, materials used directly by the color filtering lens industry are all directly harmful against the environment. In particular, solvents for light resistance materials are often byproducts from the petrochemical industry. The research focus of this project is in reducing the solvent contents of the repair fluids for color filter lens to reduce high temperature solidification processes. Not only would environmental damage from solvent dispersion be reduced, manufacturing costs can be lowered as well. Normal repair fluids primarily provide the coloring liquid for displaying color, and its main ingredients include 25~30% coloring agents and 70~75% dispersing solvents (for example, PGMEA). Units with lower dispersing tendencies (for example, MMA / TPGDA) are selected to replace dispersing solvents to achieve environmental protection and energy conservation objectives.

Also, to account for developments in inkjet printing technologies, this conceptual recipe can be simultaneously applied to inkjet applications, and remain adjustable to fulfill customer requirements. More importantly, through developing our own ink manufacturing technologies, we can penetrate the bottleneck caused by specialized ink materials being controlled by foreign manufacturers, and thus increase CPT’s cost and competitive advantages.

Our team has many dissertations published domestically and abroad. In particular, our Solvent Less Ink dissertation won the Symposium Distinguished Paper award from the international information display association’s conference (SID) in 2010. This award empowered our technology with certain recognition. Also, CPT has made preparatory announcements for solvent-less ink recipe patents.

Orientation Fluid-Free (PI) Production Technology

Members of the Material Development Department of the New Product Research and Development Division of the Research and Development Center:Junwei Su, Zhantian Lian, Meisha She, Xinmin FuInstructor: Director Jianlong Zhou

To realize the objective of harmonized development between industry and environment, this task force proposed to stop using PI orientation membranes and organic solvents during the manufacturing process, which can conserve 50 tons or more of CO2 emission annually, making it a green manufacturing process with great development potential.

During the initial stages of developing PI-free technology, the most difficult part was introducing orientation functions to liquid crystal without using PI orientation membranes. Therefore, we started considering mixing orientation units into liquid crystal, so that the unit forms a layer with the characteristics of orientation membranes within the liquid crystal, thus replacing the manufacturing process for traditional PI orientation membranes and producing liquid crystals with orientation functions. The greatest issue with this technology is in the development of units and liquid crystal materials. After the combined diligence of our team members and encouragement from the instructor, this technology was finally successfully applied for cell manufacturing processes after close to three years of technological developments, thus replacing traditional PI manufacturing technologies. Furthermore, this technology yielded distinguished results in patent applications and international dissertations.
