Mission accomplished!The Bahrain Roy-

al Guard team, led by Prince Shaikh Mohammed Hamad Mohammed Al Khali-fa, on early Tuesday morning (Bahrain time) became the first international team to conquer the new altitude of Mount Ev-erest.

They successfully reached and stood atop the world’s highest mountain peak between 5.30am (2:45am Tuesday, Bahrain time) and 6.40am local time (3.55am, Bahrain time).

This was confirmed by Min-gma Sherpa, chairman at Seven

Summit Treks which organised the royal expedition. The news was announced on its social me-dia account.

The Bahrain Everest team was formed by HM the King’s

Representative for Humani-tarian Work and Youth Affairs, National Security Advisor and Royal Guard Commander, Ma-jor-General His Highness Shai-kh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khal-

ifa, to train in the Himalayas in Nepal and to climb the summit of Mt Everest.

This is the first internation-al team to conquer the new al-titude of the snow-capped Mt Everest, said Mira Acharya, di-rector at Nepal’s Department of Tourism.

In December last year, Nepal and China jointly announced that the revised height of the world’s highest peak was 8,848.86 metres, about 86 centi-metres more than the previous measurement done by India in 1954.

The Nepal government decid-

ed to measure the exact height of the mountain amid debates that there might have been a change in it due to various rea-sons, including the devastating earthquake of 2015.

Sherpa told Xinhua news agency that 12 members of the 16-strong team of the Bahrain Royal Guard reached the top of the world’s tallest mountain.

“Four could not climb the mountain due to illness,” he said, without giving details.

Sherpa denied, however, that any of the four climbers were infected with coronavirus, as reports were rife about climbers

sickened with the virus at the base camp of the world’s tallest peak.

The Bahrain team arrived in Kathmandu on March 15 to be-gin its Everest expedition.

Climbing leader Tashi Lak-pa Sherpa, who is the youngest person to climb Everest without oxygen support in 2013, said that the team members are now de-scending from the top.

They are the first Bahrain na-tionals to stand atop Everest, he said.

The Royal Guard of Bahrain is a unit of the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF).

Startup Exporter Solution launched • The move targets first-time exporters serving startups, SMEs and micro-businesses exporting new service and product lines

• All first-time exporters are entitled to utilise Export Bahrain’s various offerings and services

Export Bahrain, an initia-tive of the national SME Development Board, has

launched its latest Startup Ex-porter support solution to help Bahraini businesses enter new markets.

The solution aims at encour-aging new exporters and SMEs by providing incentive-based grants to overcome liquidity challenges faced by first-time exporters.

The move targets first-time exporters serving startups, SMEs and micro-businesses exporting new service and product lines.

The solution will allow grants covering up to 20% of the initial value of their first export trans-action.

Other services include export

credit insurance facilities, inter-nalisation and export advisory, ex-port tendering, international retail buyer initiative, export shipping and logistics, export facilitation and deal support, export market intelligence and more.

All first-time exporters are en-titled to utilise Export Bahrain’s various offerings and services.

“Introducing new exporters into the market through the Startup Exporter solution is a

critical component of our na-tional strategy to attract more international buyers to small and medium businesses,” Zayed bin Rashid Alzayani, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tour-ism, and Chairman of the SME Development Board, said.

“Initiatives such as this will serve to incentivise companies to explore new market opportu-nities and attract global buyers to products and services in Bah-

rain while helping to accelerate their growth.

“We are hopeful that initi-atives such as this will create new opportunities for Bahrain based businesses as they glo-balise their business models and seek to promote their products on a national level in the global marketplace.”

For her part, Safa Abdulkhal-iq, Export Bahrain Acting Chief Executive Officer added: “Our

latest solution is designed to en-courage exporters to initiate their first export transaction and at the same time to cover the necessary overheads required for the cost associated with that.”

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yes-terday held a telephone

call with the Bahrain Royal Guard team which successfully reached the peak of Mt Everest, the highest mountain summit in the world.

HM the King congratulated the Bahrain Everest team captain, Major Shaikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, for the historic exploit, and for hoisting the king-dom’s flag at the highest moun-tain summit in the world, lauding the courage of the team members and expressing the pride of all Bahrainis in their ability to attain a world achievement.

HM King Hamad stressed that Bahrain’s message from the highest mountain is that peace

and security should prevail all over the world.

HM the King congratulated the team on Eid Al Fitr, wishing them further success, and ex-pressing hope to meet them in Bahrain soon.

Bahrain approves new Sputnik Light single dose vaccineTDT | Manama

The Kingdom of Bahrain yesterday approved for

emergency use the new single dose Sputnik Light vaccine produced by the Gamaleya National Center for Epidemiological and Microbiology Research, at the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

The decision to approve the new Sputnik vaccine and allow its use was based on the thorough analysis data provided by the man-ufacturing company.

On receipt of the vaccine files and the results of the expanded study, the Na-tional Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) under-took a review and evalu-ation process, including the evaluation of efficacy data, safety throughout the clinical trials and vaccine manufacturing quality and product stability, noting the manufacturer’s com-mitment to applying the principles of good phar-maceutical manufacturing (GMP) according to inter-national standards.

The NHRA also took the opinion of the Clini-cal Research Committee, academics and physicians responsible for approving clinical trials.

Following approval by the Immunization Com-mittee at the Ministry of Health, who considered technical and scientific data, the NHRA took the decision to approve the Sputnik light vaccine for emergency use.

The new Sputnik Light vaccine uses the first dose of the previously ap-proved Sputnik V vaccine, with a high efficacy level and proven effectiveness against all new strains of Covid-19, evident during laboratory testing at the Gamaleya National Centre.

The NHRA confirmed that based on the approval issued today, the Ministry of Health will commence import procedures.

By permitting the emer-gency use of Sputnik light, Bahrain has approved its sixth vaccine for emer-gency use, following; Sin-opharm, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Johnson and Sputnik V. Bahrain is com-mitted to protecting the health and safety of all cit-izens and residents.

Kingdom condemns school shooting in Kazan, RussiaTDT | Manama

Bahrain condemned the shooting incident that

occurred at a school in Ka-zan, Russian Federation, which resulted in the death and injury of dozens of people, including children.

The Foreign Ministry extended sincere condo-lences to the families of the victims and to the Russian government and people, wishing a speedy recovery to all those injured as a re-sult of this heinous terrorist act that contradicts all re-ligious and human values and principles.

No political prisonersAl Jazeera Channel’s professionalism claims are false: Interior Ministry

The Interior Ministry is-sued a statement to clar-ify facts and refute fre-

quent allegations of the Qatari Al Jazeera Channel as part of its hostile campaign against the Kingdom of Bahrain.

In the statement, the Interior Ministry asserted the following:

First: The report of Al Jazeera channel quoting US Congress Members calling for “the re-lease of political prisoners in Bahrain” is baseless and against reality. Bahrain has no single political prisoner.

Those serving their penal-ties at the Reformation and Re-habilitation Centre, in which Al Jazeera and its proxies are pressuring for their release, are convicts in criminal and ter-rorist cases, and final verdicts were issued against them after completing all judiciary phases.

Second: Freedom of expres-sion is one of the primary hu-man rights principles that Bah-rain gives high importance in its human rights records.

This should be clear in the activities of local media and so-cial media websites that reflect the vitality of Bahraini society, which enjoys the brightest era of freedom of opinion and ex-pression.

Third: Those running the Qatari Al Jazeera Channel think that the channel is a me-dia establishment to highlight

various opinions, “the opinion and the other opinion.” Then

why are the “different opin-ions” only limited to those who work against Bahrain and its accomplishments? Those peo-ple overlooked Bahrain’s long human rights accomplishments, including its milestones in the last few years.

Along with the formation of active and civilised organisa-tions such as the National In-stitution for Human Rights, the Ombudsman and the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commis-sion that carry out periodic and surprise visits to the reforma-tion and rehabilitation centres to ensure that inmates receive services stated in the law.

Fourth: The double-standard of the Qatari Al Jazeera Channel in its media approach and attempts to diminish others and interfere in their internal affairs is obvious, and it is against the channel’s pro-fessionalism claims.

As Bahrain wakes up to Eid this year, the world had lost more than

Eid is thus also the ‘Feast of the Sacrifice’.

And, suddenly, the word sac-rifice is relevant more than ever.

It’s now the time for us to make sacrifices, not just for ourselves, but to save others too.

For this, we have to sacrifice our habits or change ourselves.

As they say, “Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures.”

Certain habits should go, as several others should come.

Social distancing, masks are some amongst them.

These are humanity’s weap-ons against this invisible enemy.

Resisting them will only re-sult in losing more lives.

Lockdowns are the norm in several parts of the world.

But we are a lucky few. Bahrain is easing many re-

strictions, but let us not misuse this hard-gained freedom.

Let us make sure to main-tain social distancing and wear masks this Eid.

Mosques open in various part of the Kingdom are ensuring this.

But, out cooperation is nec-essary.

The government, health

workers and our leaders are re-lentlessly battling the pandemic to keep us safe.

They had also succeeded to a great extent.

Let’s not fail them. Bahrain has almost returned

to business as usual, thanks to the national vaccination drive.

The government is also plan-ning a booster dose to ensure that another wave never hap-pens.

For this, our resolve to main-tain the COVID-19 protocol is a must.

As we get on to celebrate Eid, let us not forget to con-t i n u e s u p p o r t i n g t h e s e efforts.

As Bahrain wakes up to Eid this year, the world had lost more than

3,300,000 of our kit and kins. This Eid is without them. And as we speak, many more

As we know, the word Adha means ‘sacrifice’, ‘offering’ or ‘oblation’.

It honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismael (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to God’s com-mand.

Eid is thus also the ‘Feast of the Sacrifice’.

And, suddenly, the word sac-rifice is relevant more than ever.

It’s now the time for us to make sacrifices, not just for ourselves, but to save others too.

For this, we have to sacrifice our habits or change ourselves.

As they say, “Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures.”

Certain habits should go, as several others should come.

Social distancing, masks are some amongst them.

These are humanity’s weap-ons against this invisible enemy.

Resisting them will only re-sult in losing more lives.

Lockdowns are the norm in several parts of the world.

But we are a lucky few. Bahrain is easing many re-

strictions, but let us not misuse this hard-gained freedom.

Let us make sure to main-tain social distancing and wear masks this Eid.

Mosques open in various part of the Kingdom are ensuring this.

But, out cooperation is nec-essary.

The government, health

workers and our leaders are re-lentlessly battling the pandemic to keep us safe.

They had also succeeded to a great extent.

Let’s not fail them. Bahrain has almost returned

to business as usual, thanks to the national vaccination drive.

The government is also plan-ning a booster dose to ensure that another wave never hap-pens.

For this, our resolve to main-tain the COVID-19 protocol is a must.

As we get on to celebrate Eid, let us not forget to con-t i n u e s u p p o r t i n g t h e s e efforts.

Celebrating Eid with e-GiftsTDT | Manama

Due to the ongoing pan-demic, people are ex-ploring ways to ex-

change gifts and eidiya this year, predominantly through apps to send e-gifts.

An eidiya is hard to define. Its literal translation is “of Eid” and it is usually a money gift that children — and sometimes adults — receive on the morn-ing of the first day of Eid, with amounts generally depending on one’s age.

Families often exchange gifts during this season, with chil-dren receiving money from fam-ily members. Muslims will also wear their best attire which is often newly bought for this spe-cial occasion. They may give oth-ers new clothes to help everyone look their best for this important festival.

Eid al-Fitr is Arabic for “holi-day of breaking of the fast” and begins at sunset on the last night of Ramadan. It marks the ending of a one-month fast when Mus-lims worldwide celebrate with festivities that last three days.

Every single member of the family gets to shop for new clothes and shoes for Eid. Shop-ping centres offer discounts to people looking for the best outfit to wear the next morning during prayer.

Women usually gather in the eldest family members’ home to bake sweets—lots of sweets.

Pistachio cookies, Baklava, and many more desserts are pre-pared and set up in the dining room for the morning. Tempo-rary henna hand tattoos are a symbol of celebration for women worn to accessorize their new outfits that will be worn the next morning for prayer.

Eid is also marked by gener-osity. Adults, family, and friends give cash to children, it is very common for young people to exchange gifts. Many people also use the occasion to give chari-table donations to the poor and needy.

Most importantly, Eid is about community. Eid Mubarak, which means “a blessed holiday” in Arabic, is a common greeting between Muslims during the holiday. Phones are flooded with cheerful and happy mes-sages. Young people compete

in constant competition for the best Eid selfie or photo mes-sage. Family and friends gather

after prayers to eat, with entire generations coming together to exchange gifts. It is a tradition to visit the eldest family members’ home to celebrate with them and cheer them on, with sons and daughters bringing sweets and gifts.

Muslims also take time to visit their loved ones’ graves with fresh flowers and prayers to God to have mercy on the deceased. It is an act worthy of praise in the Muslim community and is a way for the living to remember the dead even amid days of cel-ebration. All these things com-bine to make Eid one of the most special, moving periods of the entire year. Hopefully, wherever people are celebrating Eid, they are doing so with sweets, selfies, and love.

New rules in Bahrain Meanwhile, Baharini officials

have annouced they will allow

indoor gyms, swimming pools, cinemas and other attractions to open to vaccinated people and those who have recovered from coronavirus, officials have announced. The end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr will mark the start of the new rules, said the National Task-force for Combating Corona-virus.

Eid al-Fitr features two to three days of celebrations that include special morning prayers. People greet each other with “Eid Mubarak,” meaning “Blessed Eid” and with formal embraces. Sweet dishes are prepared at home and gifts are given to children and to those in need. They decorate their homes and prepare sumptuous meals for family and friends. They prepare new clothes and shoes for the festival. Eid festivities in various countries may vary culturally depending on the region, but one common thread in all celebrations is generosity and hospitality. It is a common tradition for families to gather at the patriarchal home after the Eid prayers. Before the special Eid meal is served, young children will line up in front of each adult family member, who dispense money as gifts to the children.

In Bahrain, Ramadan Ghabgas were held in compliance with man-datory precautionary measures set by the

Ministry of Health and the National Task-

force for Combating COVID-19. The Ghabga meals were sent to the participants in coop-

eration with hotels, in full compliance with

the health protocols for food deliveries.

Last year, Hajj that usu-ally sees over 2.5 mil-lion Muslims travel to Makkah was curtailed

for the first time in modern history to allow

just 1,000 pilgrims to take part due to COV-

ID-19.

Things you should knowu The National Medical Taskforce for Combatting the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has announced the procedures to be followed by vaccinated or recovered citizens, residents and visitors, for sectors to be re-opened from the first day of the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

u To access services provided by re-opened sectors, all vaccinated citizens, residents within the Kingdom of Bahrain are required to provide proof of vaccination; by displaying their vaccinated green shield on the ‘BeAware Bahrain’application, and visitors can also use other official COVID-19 applications within the GCC as proof of vaccination or proof of recovery. Visitors from other countries are also required to provide proof of vaccination by presenting an acceptance card of certified vaccination, provided upon arrival to the Kingdom.

u Mosques in the Kingdom were temporarily hosting Friday prayers following COVID-19 guidelines. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia has announced that the Hajj will be held this year following health and safety requirements due to the pandemic. The Hajj and Umrah Ministry said in a statement that Hajj will go ahead this year with all the health, security and regulatory standards and regulations in place in order to preserve the health and wellbeing of the pilgrims.


There are moon-sighting committees in each country all over the

world. They get together after the sunset prayers in order to see the new moon of the month of Shawal. If the moon is seen with the naked

eye, the committee will announce the end of

Ramadan.

The start and end of lunar months are deter-mined in Bahrain and in most Muslim countries by sighting the moon.

A month lasts 29 or 30 days, so Ramadan

will end on Tuesday or Wednesday and Eid al

Fitr (Eid feast) will start the next day.


Bahrain Flour Mills reports Q1 profit

Bahrain Flour Mills com-pany yesterday report-ed a profit for the first

quarter, reversing a loss a year ago, helped by increases in the fair value of investments and other income.

The company said it has all COVID-19 measures in place on its premises, with 90% of its employees receiving the vaccination.

Quarterly net profit was BHD 1,110,945, compared to a net loss of BHD 1,931,932 in the year-ago quarter.

Basic and diluted earnings per share were 45 fils com-pared with a loss of (78) fils in the same period of 2020.

Q1 operating profit was BD 160,079 compared to BD 260,314 in the year-ago quar-ter, a decrease of 38.5%.

Al-Matahin attributed the drop in operating profit to a decrease in sales volume and increases in operating expens-es.

Regarding Q1 sales, Bah-rain Flour Mills Company said it achieved sales of BHD 1,928,346, compared to BHD 2,051,225 in the year-ago quar-ter, a 6% decrease.

Total equity increased by 3.4% to BHD 21,602,998 com-pared with 20,884,437 as re-

corded on 31 December 2020.The total assets reached

BHD 25,673,335 compared to BD 30,123,536 at the end of the same period in 2020, a de-crease of 14.8%.

Marwan Khaled Tabbara, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, said that the company continues to adhere to all necessary COV-ID-19 precautionary measures to preserve the safety of its employees and ensure the continuity of work amid the challenges the company is fac-ing under the current circum-stances.

Al-Matahin Company said it is proud of its employee’s awareness and commitment to the government’s vaccina-tion initiative. The company said 90% of its employees are vaccinated.

GFH reports strong performance in Q1, records US$16.12 million profit• Profit surged 217.2%

• Total income rose 30.1%

Helped by a strong per-formance of all its busi-ness lines, GFH Finan-

cial Group yesterday reported a profit which surged 217.2% in the first quarter, despite the continuing effect of the pan-demic.

First quarter profit, GFH said, was also boosted by improved contributions from its com-mercial banking and treasury activities.

“In the first quarter, profita-bility was driven by the place-ment of unique and diverse deals including the Group’s c.US$135 million acquisition of a mission-critical distribu-tion facility in Chicago, leased to Michelin North America, as well as the sale of GFH’s US-based portfolio of pre-IPO, high-growth companies that specialise in next-generation technologies,” Hisham Alrayes,

CEO of GFH, said. Also supporting the results

was the sale of equity invest-ments and treasury income re-alised from Sukuks, notes and fixed income.

Quarterly resultsThe first-quarter net prof-

it attributable to shareholders was US$16.12 million up from US$5.08 m in the same quarter a year ago.

Earnings per share were US cents 0.53 compared to US cents 0.15 in the prior-year quarter.

Consolidated net profit

jumped 185.2% to US$19.34 m from US$6.78 m in the first quar-ter of 2020.

Total equity attributable to shareholders was US$0.92 bil-lion on 31 March 2021 from US$0.91 billion at year-end 2020, up 0.4%. The marginal increase in shareholders’ equity was primarily due to profit for the period and fair value move-ment in the treasury portfolio.

Total income was US$90.39 m compared to US$69.46 m for the first quarter of 2020, a 30.1% rise. Supporting the growth was income generated from

the placement of deals, sale of assets and increased treasury activities.

Total expenses were US$71.05 m, up 13.4% from US$62.68 m in the year-ago quarter.

Commenting, Jassim Alsed-diqi, Chairman of GFH, said, “We’re very pleased with the Group’s first-quarter results especially in light of the con-tinuing effects of the pandemic still being felt around the world. Despite this, the first three months of 2021 saw GFH make great strides across the business and deliver good growth in prof-its and income year-over-year. Over the quarter, we continued to grow our retail and invest-ment banking, asset manage-ment and treasury businesses as well as our portfolio and pres-ence in key markets including the GCC, UK, Europe and the US.”

Looking ahead, he said GFH will continue building on the momentum. “We will focus and expect to further acceler-ate growth, enhance value and strengthen the bottom line in the periods ahead.”

Alrayes added, “We entered 2021 with a very promising pipeline of opportunities and successfully converted these into transactions that were wel-comed by our investors across the region.”

Tesla puts brake on Shanghai land buy as US-China tensions weighTDT | Manama

US electric car maker Tesla Inc has halted plans to buy

land to expand its Shanghai plant and make it a global export hub, people familiar with the

matter said, due to uncertainty created by US-China tensions.

With 25% tariffs on imported Chinese electric vehicles im-posed on top of existing levies under former US President Don-ald Trump still in place, Tesla

now intends to limit the pro-portion of China output in its global production, two of the four people said.

Tesla’s Shanghai factory is de-signed to make up to 500,000 cars per year, and has the capaci-

ty to produce Model 3 and Model Y vehicles at a rate of 450,000 total units per year.

In March, Tesla refrained from bidding on a plot of land across the road from the plant as it no longer aimed to boost Chi-

na production capacity signifi-cantly, at least for now, three of the people said, declining to be named as the discussions were private.

In a statement to Reuters, Te-sla said its Shanghai factory was

“developing as planned.”Tesla sold 25,845 China-made

vehicles in China and overseas in April, down from 35,478 in March, according to data from China Passenger Car Associa-tion.

Ahli United Bank reports Q1 net profit of $ 159.6 m • The cost to income ratio was maintained at 27.7%

Ahli United Bank yester-day reported a first-quar-ter profit, which the

bank said was impacted by low-er net interest income amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hurting the net interest in-come, AUB said, was low-key benchmark interest rates and reduced activity-based fees & commission and other income due to the outbreak.

Meshal Al Othman, AUB Chairman, said that global and regional economies are still “be-ing impacted by the resurgence of new virus variants which adversely affect business con-fidence and delay recovery ef-forts.”

AUB, he said, continues to nav-igate these challenging market conditions in a balanced and structured manner, and its re-sults reflect its conservative stance in terms of risk assess-ment and management.

The bank, however, said the net interest income and total operating income improved by 3.8% and 0.7% from the trailing Q4/2020 quarter with improved

core interest and fee income streams.

Quarterly resultsThe quarterly net profit at-

tributable to its equity share-holders was US$ 159.6 million for the first quarter, compared to US$ 171.4 m in the year-ago quarter, a decline of 6.9%.

Basic and Diluted Earnings per Share were US 1.6 cents versus US 1.7 cents in the same quarter a year ago.

Comprehensive income at-tributable to the owners of the bank was US$ 174.8 m (Q1/2020: US$ -37.0 m).

Net interest incomeNet interest income was

US$ 207.0 m (Q1/2020: US$

213.8 m, -3.2%), and total op-erating income was US$ 291.0 m (Q1/2020: US$ 318.7 m, -8.7%).

Non-performing loans ratio stood at 2.7% (31 December 2020: 2.6%) with specific pro-vision coverage of 85.2% (31 De-cember 2020: 85.9%). Provision coverage levels are calculated on a cash provision basis ex-cluding the value of the addi-tional significant non-cash (real estate and securities) collateral available against non-perform-ing loans.

The cost to income ratio was maintained at 27.7% (Q1/2020: 27.1%) reflecting AUB’s contin-uing cost discipline.

Total assets at 31 March 2021 was marginally lower (-1.6%) to

US$ 39.4 billion (31 December 2020: US$ 40.1 bn) reflecting prudent balance-sheet manage-ment under subdued operating and funding conditions..

Return on Average Assets was at 1.7% for Q1/2021 (Q1/2020: 1.9%).

Google Pay launches international money transfers with Wise and Western Union

Alphabet Inc’s Google has launched international

money transfer partnerships with remittances firms Wise and Western Union Co (WU.N) for users of its U.S. payments app, the companies said on Tuesday.

Google Pay users in the Unit-ed States can now transfer money to app customers in In-dia and Singapore, with plans to expand to the 80 countries available via Wise, and 200 via Western Union by the end of the year.

Google’s foray in the $470 billion remittance market, marks a further step by the technology company to ex-pand its financial services of-fering, ramping up competi-tion in the digital payments sector.

London-based Wise was launched in 2011 with the aim of making international money transfers cheaper and easier, while Western Union remains

a market leader in remittances, with a sprawling global net-work of physical locations.

Their partnership with Google Pay, which has 150 million users in 40 countries, comes as the COVID-19 pan-demic has led to a boom in online payments, but an es-timated drop in overall re-mittances flows. The money migrant workers sent home is projected to have declined 14% from 2019 due to wors-ening economic conditions and employment levels in mi-grant-hosting countries, ac-cording to the latest estimates from the World Bank.

“Even with COVID a lot of people have relocated around the world and we wanted to focus on how we can help facilitate these payments,” said Josh Woodward, direc-tor of product management at Google. “Our goal for this year is to work with Wise and Western Union to roll this out for the countries they support.”

Ahli United Bank reports Q1 net profit of $ 159.6 m • The cost to income ratio was maintained at 27.7%

Ahli United Bank yester-day reported a first-quar-ter profit, which the

bank said was impacted by low-er net interest income amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hurting the net interest in-come, AUB said, was low-key benchmark interest rates and reduced activity-based fees & commission and other income due to the outbreak.

Meshal Al Othman, AUB Chairman, said that global and regional economies are still “be-ing impacted by the resurgence of new virus variants which adversely affect business con-fidence and delay recovery ef-forts.”

AUB, he said, continues to nav-igate these challenging market conditions in a balanced and structured manner, and its re-sults reflect its conservative stance in terms of risk assess-ment and management.

The bank, however, said the net interest income and total operating income improved by 3.8% and 0.7% from the trailing Q4/2020 quarter with improved

core interest and fee income streams.

Quarterly resultsThe quarterly net profit at-

tributable to its equity share-holders was US$ 159.6 million for the first quarter, compared to US$ 171.4 m in the year-ago quarter, a decline of 6.9%.

Basic and Diluted Earnings per Share were US 1.6 cents versus US 1.7 cents in the same quarter a year ago.

Comprehensive income at-tributable to the owners of the bank was US$ 174.8 m (Q1/2020: US$ -37.0 m).

213.8 m, -3.2%), and total op-erating income was US$ 291.0 m (Q1/2020: US$ 318.7 m, -8.7%).

Non-performing loans ratio stood at 2.7% (31 December 2020: 2.6%) with specific pro-vision coverage of 85.2% (31 De-cember 2020: 85.9%). Provision coverage levels are calculated on a cash provision basis ex-cluding the value of the addi-tional significant non-cash (real estate and securities) collateral available against non-perform-ing loans.

The cost to income ratio was maintained at 27.7% (Q1/2020: 27.1%) reflecting AUB’s contin-uing cost discipline.

Total assets at 31 March 2021 was marginally lower (-1.6%) to

US$ 39.4 billion (31 December 2020: US$ 40.1 bn) reflecting prudent balance-sheet manage-ment under subdued operating and funding conditions..

Return on Average Assets was at 1.7% for Q1/2021 (Q1/2020: 1.9%).

Looking ahead, Meshal Al Othman said, “AUB will con-tinue to focus on providing a safe operating environment for all staff, clients and coun-terparties, on building a seam-less remote capability through its existing digital initiatives to transact its business client needs and on protecting its core earnings capacity and multi country franchise until busi-ness as usual conditions can be restored”.

Google Pay launches international money transfers with Wise and Western Union

Alphabet Inc’s Google has launched international

money transfer partnerships with remittances firms Wise and Western Union Co (WU.N) for users of its U.S. payments app, the companies said on Tuesday.

Google Pay users in the Unit-ed States can now transfer money to app customers in In-dia and Singapore, with plans to expand to the 80 countries available via Wise, and 200 via Western Union by the end of the year.

Google’s foray in the $470 billion remittance market, marks a further step by the technology company to ex-pand its financial services of-fering, ramping up competi-tion in the digital payments sector.

London-based Wise was launched in 2011 with the aim of making international money transfers cheaper and easier, while Western Union remains

a market leader in remittances, with a sprawling global net-work of physical locations.

Their partnership with Google Pay, which has 150 million users in 40 countries, comes as the COVID-19 pan-demic has led to a boom in online payments, but an es-timated drop in overall re-mittances flows. The money migrant workers sent home is projected to have declined 14% from 2019 due to wors-ening economic conditions and employment levels in mi-grant-hosting countries, ac-cording to the latest estimates from the World Bank.

“Even with COVID a lot of people have relocated around the world and we wanted to focus on how we can help facilitate these payments,” said Josh Woodward, direc-tor of product management at Google. “Our goal for this year is to work with Wise and Western Union to roll this out for the countries they support.”

Bahrain-based Ithmaar Holding yesterday posted a

first-quarter profit, reversing a loss in the prior quarter, helped by improvement in assets per-formance, and lower impair-ment provisions compared to the previous period.

The Board of Directors also said they are working on var-ious initiatives to improve the capital position, “which will strengthen the Company’s con-solidated equity.”

As part of this strategy, Ith-maar Holding and the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait (BBK)

signed a Memorandum of Un-derstanding in September 2020 on the potential acquisition by BBK of Ithmaar bank’s Bahrain operations as well as specific assets of IB Capital, a whol-ly-owned subsidiary of Ithmaar Holding.

The plans, which are current-ly in the due diligence phase, will require shareholders and regulatory approvals. Ithmaar Holding Chairman Prince Amr Al Faisal announced the first-quarter results.

Earnings Per Share was posi-tive US Cents 0.30, compared to negative US Cents 0.78 for the same period in 2020.

Overall , net profit was US$13.85 m compared to a net loss of US$18.18 m in the same period in 2020.

Total owners’ equity in-creased to US$34.08 m as of 31 March 2021, a 130.9% increase compared to US$14.76 m as of 31 December 2020, mainly due to income attributable to share-holders as well as improve-

ments in the Pakistan Rupee’s exchange rates. Accumulated losses stood at US$824.16 m and amount to 109% of the share capital. Total assets in-creased to US$8.98 billion as of 31 March 2021, a 7.1 per cent increase compared to US$8.38 bn as of 31 December 2020.

Ithmaar Holding’s invest-ment portfolio comprises ma-jor financial institutions such as Ithmaar Bank, Faysal Bank Limited Pakistan, BBK and Sol-idarity Group Holding, in ad-dition to several other non-fi-nancial investments including Naseej and Ithmaar Develop-ment Company.

the first quarter and said it con-tinues to focus on further en-hancing its customers’ Islamic banking experience.

The bank’s quarterly net profit attributable to equity holders was BD0.15 million compared to the BD6.71 m net loss attrib-utable to equity holders in the year-ago quarter. Overall, net profit was BD1.55 m compared to the net loss of BD5.68 m for the same period in 2020.

“On behalf of the Ithmaar Bank Board of Directors, I am pleased to report that, despite the continuing economic chal-lenges imposed by the ongoing global pandemic, the Bank has started the current year on a positive note, reporting profits for the Quarter and continuing to improve its customer offer-ings,” said HRH Prince Amr Al Faisal. “This further reinforces our confidence that the Bank is on the right track, and takes us another step closer to realising

our shared vision of becoming one of the regions’ leading Is-lamic retail banks,” he said.

The bank also said its cost of funding decreased significantly, with profits paid to banks, finan-cial and other institutions dur-ing the three months ended 31 March 2021 reducing to BD15.42 m, a 36 % reduction compared to BD24.09 m in the same pe-riod last year. Ithmaar said the total expenses also remained well under control, decreasing to BD17.14 m, a 1.9% reduction compared to BD17.47 m, despite continued investments in fur-ther enhancing products, servic-es and the customer experience.

“Despite the ongoing econom-ic challenges, Ithmaar Bank con-tinues to grow, particularly in the key, customer-focused ar-eas,” said Ithmaar Bank Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed Abdul Rahim. “This is reflected in the continued growth of custom-er deposits, a key indicator of market confidence in the Bank,

despite the extraordinarily tur-bulent economic conditions,” he added. “Despite current market conditions, the equity of

unrestricted investment ac-count holders remained stable at BD1.28 billion as of 31 March 2021, with a minor increase

of 0.5% increase compared to BD1.27 billion as of 31 Decem-ber 2020,” said Abdul Rahim. “Customers’ current accounts

also grew to BD708.25 million as of 31 March 2021, 7% increase compared to BD661.74 m as of 31 December 2020,” he said.

Morgan and Bank ABC in a dig-ital currency settlement pilot scheme, the central bank said in a statement yesterday.

“Bank ABC, along with JP Morgan, will pilot the transfer-

ring of funds from and to Bah-rain in US dollars for payments from buyers to suppliers,” the statement said.

“This will lead to suppliers being paid faster and buy-ers originating payments in shorter time periods without the need for holding funds in advance.”

million fund to pay content creators who make hit videos on its new short-form video feature Shorts, as YouTube aims to court more influencers.

The fund will launch in the coming months and pay crea-

tors this year and 2022, You-Tube said.

The investment comes as platforms are racing to at-tract young creators who are building huge fan followings -- and big earning potential -- by filming short comedy skits and dance routines. Viral app TikTok jump-started the trend of short-form video clips and was quickly copied by other apps such as Facebook-owned

Instagram’s Reels, Snapchat Spotlight and YouTube Shorts.

YouTube said the new fund will pay thousands of creators each month whose videos on Shorts receive the most engage-ment from viewers.

A 13-storey residential block in the Gaza Strip collapsed yesterday

night after being hit by an Israeli air strike, witnesses said, and three people were wounded in a retaliatory rocket attack from Gaza on Tel Aviv.

Video footage showed three plumes of thick, black smoke rising from the Gaza tower, its upper storeys still intact as they fell. The building houses an of-fice used by the political lead-ership of the enclave’s Islamist rulers, Hamas.

Electricity in the surrounding area went out, and residents were using flashlights.

Shortly after the attack, Ha-mas and the Islamic Jihad group said they would respond by fir-ing rockets at Tel Aviv.

Air raid sirens and explosions were heard around the city, and the skies were lit up by the streaks of multiple interceptor missiles launched towards the incoming rockets.

Pedestrians ran for shelter, and diners streamed out of Tel Aviv restaurants while others flattened themselves on pave-ments as the sirens sounded. Israeli television stations said three people had been wounded in the suburb of Holon.

The Israel Airports Authority said it had halted take-offs at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport “to allow defence of (the) nation’s skies”.

The US State Department urged restraint on both sides.

“We are now carrying out

our promise,” Hamas’s armed wing said in a statement. “The Qassam Brigades are launch-ing their biggest rocket strike against Tel Aviv and its suburbs, with 130 rockets, in response to the enemy’s targeting of resi-dential towers.”

This holiday spans over three day with the first day marking the end of the month of Ram-

adan. The month of Ramadan Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, and intimacy with their spouses from sunrise to sunset. In the evening, they gather in the mosque to perform a special congregational prayer called Tarawih. Additionally, many Muslims spend most of the month of Ramadan in sincere devotion, praying in the middle

of the night, giving charity, and performing good deeds.

One might imagine that Mus-lims are relieved that Ramadan is over. However, for many, as Ramadan comes to an end they feel a sense of sadness. Ramadan is a time when they draw near to God, better themselves, and feel a close intimacy to God that cannot be explained. It must be

experienced.Ramadan is not only about

refraining from food and drink, but it is also about abstaining from evil thoughts, words, and actions. What makes Ramadan special is that these acts of devo-tion are done collectively.

Everyone is fasting, praying, and trying to get rid of their bad habits. It creates an atmosphere where one is encouraged and supported to become a better person. However, what also makes Ramadan special is that it is only one month. Had it been more than that it would lose its uniqueness.

It is a short, but high intensi-ty, month of changing your life. Because Ramadan is a month of refraining from eating and drinking during the daylight hours, Eid is about celebrat-ing the hard work. During Eid, Muslims are prohibited from fasting and therefore must eat and drink.

Each culture throughout the world has different Eid tradi-tions, but all of them begin with the morning Eid prayers in the mosque. These prayers are usu-ally very large and sometimes take place in a larger setting such as a park or stadium to accom-modate all the people. Toward the end of Ramadan Muslims give a small amount of money in charity, approximately $10 a person, and this goes to the less fortunate.

It is meant to allow those fam-ilies who are struggling to also celebrate Eid, buy new clothes, or gifts for their children. As Muslims celebrate, they must never forget the less fortunate. This charity is meant to lessen the burden of the underprivi-leged, those who have nothing to celebrate. Although Eid is meant to be a time of joy and celebration, one cannot divorce themselves from the misery of others.

Muslims dress up, wearing their best and finest clothes. The new clothing represents spiritual renewal. The person leaves Ramadan, a month of self-discipline, in a more beau-tified spiritual state. Food is an important part of Eid. Eating takes the place of fasting just as ease in the next life will take place of challenges in this world.

The Quran notes that in the

hereafter, believers will be told: “Eat and drink with happiness because of what you used to do” (Quran 52: 20). Meaning, the reward of fasting is that one will enjoy never ending buffets and luxurious meals in the hereafter.

After the prayer, most Mus-lims focus on gift giving and f a m i l y g a t h e r i n g s . M a n y mosques in America give toys to all the children who attend the prayers. Different Muslim cul-tures have their own special Eid sweets.

The day is usually marked by visiting relatives and friends to celebrate together, share the happiness, and spread harmony. When it was Eid, Prophet Mu-hammad would take one road to the mosque and a different road on his way back. He did this in order to great as many people as possible and spread peace and happiness.

Aisha, the Prophet’s wife, not-ed that on the day of Eid there were people playing in the mosque and entertaining others. She sat with the Prophet with her cheek against his. Rower Nievarez earns Tokyo Olympics spotTDT | Manila

Rower Cris Nievarez of the Philippines will now hope

to put the country in the Olym-pic map in his debut appear-ance.

The 21-year-old became the eighth Filipino to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after organizers confirmed his qual-ification in the men’s singles sculls.

Nievarez, who only joined the national team in 2016 at 15 years old, finished ninth in his event at the Asia Oceania Continental Qualification over the weekend in Tokyo, Japan, where only the top five rowers will earn tickets.

However, since other coun-tries in his event have already earned berths particularly Ja-pan and Iran, he was able to earn a slot.

“I am so happy. I just can’t believe it, I’m shocked,” said Nievarez, who only learned of his qualification while in a 14-day quarantine after arriving from Japan the other day.

His Olympic ticket came as a surprise and with only 10 weeks left before the Games, but Nievarez said he is not put-ting this once-in-a-lifetime op-portunity into waste by putting more quality to his training.

“I will be more focused es-pecially on improving my en-durance and muscle strength. I will also improve technique,” said Nievarez.

He knew what was in store for him as far as venue is con-

cerned, as the venue for the Games is the same venue that they had competed during the Asian qualifiers. It is a matter of improving his time to be at par with his Olympic-bound counterparts, particularly from Europe.

“It is really my goal to keep my time close to my opponents’ in Tokyo,” said Nievarez, adding that his best time of 7 minutes and 10 seconds is still far from

veteran rowers clocking under 7 minutes.

Nievarez’s qualification end-ed Philippine rowing’s two-decade-old Olympic drought where the last rower to qualify to the Games was Benjie Tolen-tino at the 2000 Sydney edition.

The Atimonan, Quezon na-tive will join early qualifiers pole vaulter EJ Obiena, world champion gymnast Carlos Yulo, 2016 Rio Olympics sil-ver medalist Hidilyn Diaz of weightlifting, and boxers Eumir Marcial, Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio and Irish Magno.

Philippine team coach Ed Maerina, who was the coun-try’s first rower to qualify for the Olympics at the 1988 Seoul, said they will continue to train Nievarez at the Lamesa Dam in Quezon City after serving their quarantine.

They have asked to bring a rowing machine for Nievarez so that he can still train while in quarantine.

Zamboanga City, in the south-ern Philippines, said he has learned how to deal with the mounting pressure and expec-tations of bringing honors to the country.

And now that he is carrying the country’s hopes of winning the Philippines’ first ever Olym-pic gold medal in Tokyo this year, it gives Marcial an idea of what to expect.

Now training in his home-town in Zamboanga City, Mar-cial said his first professional fight last December gave him an idea of what to expect.

And this will help him deal with his inner self when Mar-cial fights in the middleweight division in the Tokyo Olympics.

“I can say that I can now manage to cope with the pres-sure of winning the gold. I will just go there, and do my utmost best to win it,” said Marcial. “I will train harder to keep myself physically and mentally fit.”

Marcial decided to turn pro-fessional when he signed a deal with the MP Promotions of box-ing legend and Senator Manny Pacquiao.

Last December, Marcial scored a unanimous decision win against American boxer Andrew Whitfield.

From that fight, Marcial said he has learned a lot about the

techniques and strategies that he can use when he gets to To-kyo.

Marcial has gone to the Unit-ed States in July last year to train under Freddie Roach for seven months.

One of the things that Marcial was able to improve after his stint in the US is his punching power.

Gerson Nietes, a member of the national boxing team coaching staff, made this as-sessment on the development of Marcial.

“He has more power, that’s what I’ve noticed,” said Nietes. “That’s because his opponents in sparring are strong in the US.”

“Gloves in the amateur are a bit thick, but he’s been able to knockout opponents. He al-ready has power even before, but his punches are more pow-erful now,” he added.

While in Zamboanga, Marcial will do his workouts in a box-ing gym complete with training equipment provided by sports-man Junnie Navarro, who also owns a basketball team in the Zamboanga Valientes.

He decided to return to the country with the rest of the Philippine team after their bid to participate in the Asian Box-ing Championships in India was cancelled due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Youth is a time of finding your place in the world, both literally, by under-

standing where you are from, absorbing cultural and histor-ical notions, and how things function around; and figurative-ly, with character development, self-understanding, personality being key to one’s individual growth. But, of course, given the complexity of the situation and how high the stakes are, it’s not smooth sailing for everyone.

BRAVE Combat Federation’s Marcel Grabinski can vouch he’d experienced a bumpy road himself. Grabinski was born in Germany, and lost his father when he was a little kid and struggled to find his own iden-tity as a teenager.

One of the main pillars for Marcel’s development and his personal stronghold is his rela-tionship with his mother, which hasn’t changed much over time. He revealed that even nowa-

days, being married and having his own house and family, he’s not only calling his mom daily, he’s visiting her pretty much every single day.

But even that strong bond was put to proof, as Ms. Grabinski has faced several health com-plications over the last years, which she overcame with the support of her beloved son.

Being from Germany, with football as the most popular sport in the country, it’s no surprise that Grabinski put on the cleats and spent most of his younger days inside of the pitch.

And he did so with great suc-cess. So much so that he says that, even to this day, some of his friends question him on why he left the sport.

But everything in Grabinski’s life changed when he turned 16 and he had his first contact with Mixed Martial Arts. “I loved watching Bruce Lee movies and I even trained Karate when I was 6, but eventually left. When I was 16 I found my way back to martial arts when I was intro-duced to MMA. As they say, old love doesn’t rust!”, he said.

Since then, he transformed

into one of the brightest stars in European MMA, a two-division champion in Germany, and pos-sibly the next big thing in BRAVE Combat Federation.

On June 4th, the Marcel Gra-binski forged through a strug-gling identity, a loving mom, and his passion for Mixed Martial Arts will face the biggest test of his entire career, as he takes on the former world champion Lucas “Mineiro” Martins in the BRAVE CF 51: The Future Is Here main event, in his first inter-national headliner, in Minsk, Belarus, which takes place in association with Rukh Sport Management.

Bahrain is set to host three matches in the 2021 AFC Cup group stage later

this month.The Group A games are

scheduled to be held between May 21 and 27, featuring three clubs, including Bahraini outfit Hidd, defending champions Al Ahed of Lebanon and Al Wahda of Syria.

Hidd will be hoping to fin-ish in first place to advance to the Zonal semi-finals. They can also make it through as the best runners-up from West Asia.

Groups B and C are also in the same zone. Bahrain’s Muharraq are in Group B along with Al Salt of Jordan, Markaz Balata of Palestine and Al Ansar of Lebanon; while Group C fea-

tures Tishreen of Syria, Markaz Shabab Al Am’ari of Palestine, Al Faisaly of Jordan and Al Ku-wait of Kuwait.

The Zonal semi-finals are scheduled to be held in August and September later this year.

This year’s AFC Cup is the 18th edition of the competition. The AFC Cup is Asia’s second-ary club tournament organised by the Asian Football Confed-eration.

The winners of the AFC Cup automatically qualify for the

2022 AFC Champions League.Ahed won the 2019 AFC Cup,

and will be looking to defend their title with the competition not being held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 38 clubs from 28 nations are competing in this year’s tournament.

A Bahraini club has won the AFC Cup just once in the past, when Muharraq took the title in 2008. They had also finished as runners-up in 2006.

“not really sure” the coronavi-rus-hit Tokyo Olympics should go ahead, as doubts grow about the Games just weeks before the opening ceremony.

The four-time tennis Grand Slam winner joined fellow Jap-anese player Kei Nishikori in raising concerns as Tokyo and other parts of Japan remain un-der a virus state of emergency.

A top politician also warned that Japan still had to make a “careful decision” about wheth-er to hold the Games, which have scant public support, ac-cording to opinion polls.

Scrapping the 2020 Olym-pics, postponed last year as the pandemic advanced, is an idea that has never quite gone away, despite repeated asser-tions from officials that they will proceed.

A survey by a leading Japa-nese daily released on Monday found 59 percent of respond-ents want the Olympics can-celled, underlining persistent public concerns over the risk of infections.

Osaka, Japan’s biggest sports star and a major gold-medal

prospect, said “to be honest, I’m not really sure”, when asked if the Olympics should take place as planned.

“I’m an athlete, and of course my immediate thought is that I want to play in the Olympics,” the four-time Grand Slam win-ner told the BBC.

“But as a human, I would say we’re in a pandemic, and if people aren’t healthy, and if they’re not feeling safe, then it’s definitely a really big cause for concern.”

Nishikori said there “defi-nitely should be a discussion” on whether Tokyo should plough ahead.

Bahrain head coach Helio Sousa has called up a 23-man national team that

will be travelling to Kiev in just over a week’s time and play two international friendly matches later this month.

The Bahrainis will be holding the camp and tune-up games as part of their remaining joint-qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023. Those qualifi-ers will be held in the Kingdom next month, and this will be the team’s final lead-up to that

crucial period.The squad list was announced

last night by the Bahrain Foot-ball Association. The camp will kick off locally on Saturday and continue until May 28. Bahrain’s qualifiers are currently sched-uled to begin in the first week of June.

The team includes 13 play-ers from national league-and-cup champions Riffa, namely Ahmed Abdulla, Ali Haram, Ali Madan, Hamad Shamsan, Hashim Isa, Hazza Ali, Jassim Al Shaikh, Komail Alaswad, Mahdi Humaidan, Mohammed Marhoon, Redha Isa, Sayed Baqer and Sayed Shubbar Alawi.

Three players are from Ma-nama, namely Ahmed Nabeel, Mohammed Adel and league top scorer Mahdi Abduljabbar.

Two are from East Riffa, in-cluding Mohammed Al Rumaihi and Abdulla Hazaa.

The rest of the team features Mohammed Marhoon from Malkiya Club, Jassim Khulaif from Budaiya, Abbas Fadhel from Al Shabab, Ebrahim Lut-fallah from Al Khaldiya Club, and overseas-based professional Sayed Dhiya Saeed from Al Nasr SC in Kuwait.

There were no players named from Hidd or Muharraq, as both clubs are set to play in the AFC Cup during the same period.

The Bahrainis are expected to depart for Kiev on May 20, where they will stay until May 24. They are scheduled to face their Ukranian counterparts at the Metalist Oblast Sports Complex stadium in the city of

Kharkiv on May 23.This friendly is the first of

two this month. The other will be against Malaysia at home on May 28.

Bahrain are in Group C of joint-qualifying, along with Iraq, Iran, Cambodia and Hong Kong. Bahrain are set to go against Cambodia on June 3, Iran on June 7 and then Hong Kong on June 15, all in the Kingdom.

The Bahrainis are currently second in the group with nine points, having won two matches and drawn thrice. Iraq are the leaders with 11 points after win-ning three games and drawing two other times. Iran are third with six points but have played just three matches so far and have two wins and two loss-es. Hong Kong and Cambodia completed the Group C table with five points and one point, respectively.

There are eight groups in all in this round of qualifiers, with five nations in each group. At the end of this stage of qualifi-cation, the eight group winners and the four best runners-up advance to the third round of World Cup qualifying, and also secure their berths in the Asian Cup. The next best 24 teams will compete in a separate competi-tion for the remaining 12 slots in the Asian Cup.
