This insightful new documentary tells the story of Danny MacAskill’s 2014 release “Epecuén”. Directed by innovative French filmmaker Thibaut Grevet, the film follows Danny and a small crew as they head to the incredible setting of Villa Epecuén. The recent history of the once thriving tourist town is told through the eyes of Pablo Novak, the town’s longest serving resident, who describes how his birthplace was destroyed and submerged by floodwaters, making it uninhabitable. After 25 years, the salt waters receded leaving behind a barren, yet beautiful landscape. The documentary explores the mental and physical challenges that filming in such a remote and desolate location presents as well as offering an intriguing insight into the processes that Danny MacAskill goes through in the creation of his extraordinary riding films.

“Imaginate” is trial biker’s Danny MacAskill’s latest re-invention of the bike video genre. Almost 85 million viewers have seen his earlier hit videos, “Inspired Bicycles and Way Back Home”. The affable Scot is an idol. Here, young Danny plays with a toy cyclist. Scattered toys transform themselves into the most imaginative stage ever set for a bike trial. MacAskill shows off his new tricks as he whirls across huge building blocks, crayons and playing cards, and fights toy soldiers that suddenly come to life. The video documents the painstaking preparations for Danny’s trials. Despite an injury, Danny throws himself into the project. We hear from his parents and the creative crew. “Imaginate” realises one of Danny’s dreams: ‘I feel like I’m a kid and I’m given the biggest toy ever.’ His community loves it – a few days after going live, the clip already scores over three million hits.

HERBERT NITSCH BACK FROM THE ABYSSOn 6 June 2012, diver Herbert Nitsch attempts to improve his own freediving world record by another 100 feet to 800 feet (244m). The record attempt off the Greek island of Santorini is only the first stage in his ‘1,000ft’ project. On this summer afternoon and despite painstaking preparation, Nitsch suffers the worst-case scenario. Having reached a depth of more than 818ft (249,5m), he falls unconscious and rescue divers bring him to the surface. For almost a year after the incident nobody knew what happened or how Nitsch was doing. The documentary accompanies Nitsch during his amazing recovery away from the public eye. It includes world-exclusive footage of the months of preparation leading up to and including Nitsch’s near-fatal accident off Santorini, of his difficult rehabilitation in specialist clinics and, finally, of his return to the stillness of the underwater ocean world.

INTO THE LIGHTMajlis al-Jinn, a vast underground chamber in Oman, is big enough to house the Great Pyramid of Giza or more than a dozen Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets. After rappelling down a 170-metre drop, Chris Sharma and his partner set out for their record-breaking ascent from the deepest point of the cave. Fighting gravity they follow the enormous arch suspended upside down much of the time. It is a ground-breaking climb back into the light.

NEYMARTHE DOCUMENTARYGenius is a word commonly used to describe Neymar. He possesses a unique talent, and his joyful and vibrant style of football amazes fans all over the world. The most marketable player on the planet began his professional career at the tender age of 17 at Santos Football Club, the same team that introduced Pelé to the world. Often compared to ‘The King Of Football’, the Brazilian star recently debuted at Barcelona, where he plays alongside greats like Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta. With more exposure now than ever, Neymar carries the burden of being an idol of a young generation and the hope of the Brazilian nation for the 2014 World Cup. Neymar’s willingness and skill to face a tough schedule of matches, training and other appointments have made him a phenomenon, but this cannot be explored without mentioning his father, Neymar Senior, who manages his son’s career and guarantees his success with a mix of professionalism and paternal love.

START OF A GLOBAL MOVEMENTWINGS FOR LIFE WORLD RUN 2014The documentary, “Start of a Global Movement”, will tell the stories of a group of individuals who are all competing in the 2014 Wings For Life World Run. We will follow our characters; who live in very different countries, separated by thousands of miles, as they prepare to run in their local race. Despite this geographical separation the races all start at the exact same time, in 36 countries around the world. This unique internationalism puts the stakes at an extraordinarily high for our characters, as they are battling across continents to become the global champion. The Wings for Life World Run isn’t only about sportsmanship, it raises money for research into spinal cord injury and as we get to know our characters we will begin to understand their relationship to the disability. Some of them are related to sufferers; sons and daughters, parents and siblings of people who are partially paralysed by a spinal cord injury. Others among our contributors are actual sufferers themselves, living with the affliction and competing in one of the four wheelchair races that are held at the same time as the runs.

THE EIGOSATO STORYJapanese FMX warrior Eigo Sato (1978-2013) made it to the very top of the freestyle motocross scene. At the age of 18 he moved to the U.S. to train. Japan’s first pro FMX rider took part in the world’s biggest FMX competitions. Sato was about to realise his great ambition of bringing Red Bull X-Fighters to Japan when a training accident cut short his life. Sato inspired many of his fellow riders and raised the FMX profile in Japan. One of the world’s best and best-liked freestylers, he is missed by his wife, family and friends. A homage to the FMX warrior, the film takes Sato’s widow, Kaori, and his 3-year-old son, Eidai, on a trip that retraces the rider’s journeys to the US, Europe and back to Asia. They meet up with Sato’s friends, sharing memories of him and learning the full Eigo Sato story. The film is a “road movie” about a woman who tries to find another side of her husband; it also retraces the history of Japanese freestyle motorcross.

Red Bull Air Race is back! Having resumed in 2014 after a three-year hiatus, another world champion will be crowned at the end of the speediest flying race’s season of 2015. Crack pilots will hold ‘master classes’ in acrobatic flying. Going for the best time and maximum number of points, they will put their small planes through high-precision manoeuvres along challenging courses marked out by inflated ‘air gates’. Thrills are guaranteed as pilots skimming the water engage in heart-stopping duels. Legendary acrobats including Hannes Arch (AUT), Kirby Chambliss (USA) and record holder Paul Bonhomme (GBR) will put their stamp on the races. As for the rookies, they will relish eying for the new ‘Challenger Cup’. A new structure and standardised propeller planes will make a fantastic contest even greater. At ten breathtaking venues including Malaysia, Japan, Russia and the U.S., there will be ripples in the air when the Red Bull Air Race is in town.

Spectacular cliffs, incredible jumps – 2015 will see the seventh round of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. To win the jury’s approval, athletes will need total focus of mind and perfect body control as they dive from a cliff height of 27 metres or 88.5 ft to execute breath-taking multiple twists and somersaults before hitting the water at over 85 kmph or 50 mph. The eight venues of the tour will be as spectacular as the high-divers’ performances. At locations such as Texas (USA), the Azores (POR), La Rochelle (FRA) and Polignano a Mare (ITA), the state of the art will be defined by the world’s elite cliff divers including record winner Orlando Duque, multiple champion Gary Hunt, maximum points holder Artem Silchenko and the young high-flyer Jonathan Paredes.

The search for the world champion in Ice Cross Downhill is on from January until March 2015 at four venues in Helsinki (FIN), Belfast (IRE), St. Paul (USA) and Edmonton (CAN). Fighting to survive each heat, ‘gladiators on ice’ will require speed, strength, agility and nerves of steel to keep their opponents in check and emerge victorious from unforgiving tracks. Top ice-cross athletes, including many ice-hockey stars, will step into their skating boots to heat up the icy spectacle, performing crazy jumps and suffering bone-crushing falls. While favourites include 2014 winner Marco Dallago and brother Luca (AUT), Cameron Naasz (USA) and Scott Croxall (CAN), the winner is anyone’s guess – because each race is a new challenge and losers will fall by the wayside.

An event that sets benchmarks. Arguably the world’s major freestyle motocross contest, the X-Fighters series also keeps pushing the boundaries of the sport. In 2014 Munich’s Olympiapark saw the first race on floating pontoons. The riders are driven by the same spirit of innovation. Year on year their breakneck jumps, stunts and tricks raise the bar ever higher. Calling at cities including Athens, Madrid and Mexico City, highlights are a certainty in the 2015 tour. As always, excited crowds will be able to watch in close proximity. Cauldron-like venues will be seething as FMX stars including current champion Josh Sheehan (AUS), 2013 winner Tom Pagès (FRA) as well as Dany Torres (ESP) and Levi Sherwood (NZL) once more attempt to make history.

The people who inhabit our planet are as diverse as the Earth’s landscapes. Different in their ways of thinking and their skills, they all have one thing in common: their identity, their most precious good. But change is upon them – and a rich diversity of cultures, languages and knowledge could be lost forever. There are many reasons for this: tourism, political upheavals and climate changes, not to mention the prevailing economic interests in our global society, are all taking their toll on the last remaining enclaves on Earth. In Niger, the ancestral lands of the Wodaabe are shrinking; in the Brazilian jungle the Yanomami people are threatened by illegal gold mining; a Chinese company is willing to buy more or less the entire island of Yap to build luxury resorts and land sales by the Ethiopian Government are endangering the Suri in the Omo Valley. Very few populations have been able to avoid change for this long. These peoples chose to remain isolated and vehemently refused contact with the Western world, but their days now appear to be numbered. This two-part series sets off on a cinematic journey to people whose world is changing, and shows others who are fighting to preserve their culture and identity.

The world of bugs – insects and arachnids – can be as spectacular as that of the big mammal predators but even more bizarre, in appearance and behaviour. To explore this world, close-up 3D takes us to a strange, dramatic and alien universe that defies the imagination. The mantis, for example, is an impressive insect, with its grasping forelegs and strange, large complex eyes, and in close-up we will see its lightning-fast strike as it captures its prey and eats it. Also, the iconic spider is the subject of many a horror movie, and the trapdoor spider is the most spectacular of them all: she hides in the ground beneath a camouflaged cover und jumps up to grab her passing prey in the fraction of a second. The familiar honey bee forms spectacular swarms and we can enter inside the swarm in 3D, seeing the behaviour of the bees as they communicate to their hive mates the position of possible new nests as well as experiencing their flight in slow motion.

Brazil is a land of gigantic proportions. This one country is almost as large as Europe or the USA. Brazil is energetic, flamboyant and fun, but also overwhelmingly beautiful. Within its mountains, seas, rainforests, deserts and millions of miles of rivers, are many of our planet’s last wild frontiers. Its diversity of life and landscape is second to none. Brazil is a rapidly developing country. In 2016 it hosts South America’s first Olympic Games. Yet, surprisingly, most of its animals and regions are still little known. This series explores five spectacular worlds. In each episode the viewer will be taken on a journey across fabulous landscapes and will meet a few carefully selected, charismatic and little known animal species. The latest in HD technology, including super slow-motion, night vision cameras, and extreme macro photography, will bring Brazil’s mysterious carnivores, secretive sea life, astounding insects, and much more to life and make this series an emotionally moving experience.

This is not a battle of eternal enemies – but a war of wits. In this two-part series, world-famous ‘lion whisperer’ Kevin Richardson will be joined by the world’s leading behavioural zoologists. Together, they will identify the lions’ as well as the hyenas’ behaviour when it comes to solving exciting, entertaining and ground-breaking tasks and riddles, custom-tailored to the animals in question. The different trials focus on specific abilities and aspects of the animals’ behaviour. Cognitive awareness and social intelligence will be put to the test: how well will the animals fare when it comes to tasks such as puzzle boxes, rope pulling or mirror mazes? Will they share their findings with animals from their own family or clan – or will they keep their knowledge to themselves? Social politics in lion prides and hyena clans differ; will these differences play out in the end? And which animal is more hard-wired for social co-operation and forming alliances, lions or hyenas? And why? This series is not about trying to find a winner – but instead will reveal why each of these species is the ultimate specialist in their own unique way.

DUST AND STRIPES

87

©TMFS

When thunderclouds begin to gather over Botswana’s Kalahari each year, 20,000 zebras get itchy feet. As the first fat raindrops hit the dust, southern Africa’s biggest animal migration gets under way. In a never-ending quest for grass and water, the striped herds undertake an annual epic trek across the vast lunar landscape of the Kalahari’s Makgadikgadi Pans. Most of the year, the Makgadikgadi is an inhospitable wasteland of windswept, salt-encrusted pans. For the area’s water-dependent zebra, the Boteti River on the western edge of the pans is a dry-season lifeline. However, it is also a death trap, with lions waiting in ambush and crocodiles lurking in dark riverside caves. As the drought tightens its grip, overgrazing along the shoreline forces some zebras into marathon-like daily roundtrips between water and grass. ‘Dust and Stripes’ tells the story of this spectacular annual migration through the eyes of a single zebra family. Documenting their journey across this otherworldly landscape, ranging from vast lunar-like pans to rolling grasslands, the film explores the wonder of this great wilderness and pays tribute to its tenacious inhabitants.

ELEPHANT KING

89

©TMFS

An isolated, ever shrinking water hole is their sole means of survival. Rain has not fallen for months. As Namibia’s worst drought on record grips Etosha National Park, the fate of an extraordinary band of bull elephants is in the balance. They have been forced into an unnatural proximity by thirst. When the giant leader of the bull elephant group goes missing, drought or no drought, the battle for his crown begins. The stakes are high. Only with the survival of this year’s calves will the herd survive. Scientist Caitlin O’Connell is one of the world’s leading experts of elephant behaviour. She has spent the last 20 winters observing the herd at this waterhole. Caitlin knows the group so well that she can almost read their minds. As she witnesses the unfolding situation she is all too aware of where this could lead. Her studies in elephant communication have shown that they form strong familial bonds. They are nature’s ideal family. Extreme times reveal extreme behavior. If the stress continues, the family will become dysfunctional. What will happen in this long dry season will shape the future of this herd for decades to come. The King can only reign if the next generation survives. And what is a king without his followers.

GENIUS OF NATURE

91

©TMFS

Life has been evolving on Planet Earth for nearly three and a half billion years. In that time, the process of natural selection has been like an arms race, shaping creatures able to survive in virtually every corner of the planet. Just 10,000 years ago, as the world emerged from the last Ice Age, one species evolved the intelligence to manipulate the natural world as never before: Homo sapiens – the wise man. In three one-hour episodes, Richard Hammond looks at some of those most remarkable creatures on the planet. A more blue-chip oriented, presenter-less, three-part version with additional stories and examples will be available alongside the Richard Hammond version. Each programme begins by identifying a selection of human problems, explores how nature has solved these problems, and then reveals how modern science has adapted nature’s solution to our own ends. In some cases, nature’s solution is still far beyond our capabilities and we have had to invent an ingenious parallel solution. The stories are visually linked by the use of an elegant ‘Library of Life’ set. Specially built and looking like a super-modern museum store, the set is packed with specimens and skeletons and extended to infinity with CGI – to suggest the sheer scale of possibilities for inspiration from nature.

Carnivorous, vegetarian or a scavenger – a fox is our main character in this journey along the Guadalquivir, which Arab Emirs once called Wadi al Kabir – the Great River. It flows for 650 kilometres before merging into the Atlantic Ocean in the salt marshes of Doñana, the greatest European paradise of wildlife. The fox has everything it takes to be the main character for our trip along the Guadalquivir. Living alone or with others, it has the stealth of a cat and the slyness of a wolf. And more than that, it has no respect for the rules of the field. Following the riverbanks, heading south to a safer surrounding, we discover many more animals along the way. The river, rich with dragonflies, poses many mysteries: sturgeons, prehistoric giants, once lived here – then suddenly disappeared. Meanwhile, the Doñana salt marshes are alive with birds. Flamingos, glossy ibises, purple swamp hens and spoonbills gather in vast numbers. And close to the salt marshes hides the most endangered feline in the world – and the fox’s worst enemy: the Iberian lynx. Together with the fox we will embark on a journey from the snow-covered summits of Cazorla to the seashore, where the Guadalquivir flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

HUNT FOR THERUSSIAN TIGER

95

©TMFS

British ecologist and wildlife researcher Chris Morgan has tracked large predators in some of the wildest and most remote places on Earth. He now faces his greatest challenge yet: to find and film the Siberian tiger living wild and free in Russia’s Far Eastern forests. It has long been accepted as impossible to film the largest big cats on Earth in the wild. But then Sooyong Park, a Korean cameraman, emerged from years in the forest with some extraordinary footage. Nobody had achieved anything like it before or since. To get his remarkable footage, Sooyong spent years tracking tigers over their huge territories. When he had identified the places they visited regularly, he dug himself into an underground pit and, unbelievably, stayed there for months at a time waiting for the tigers to come. Meeting up with Sooyong Park, Chris will learn how he found the tigers and will soon come to understand the enormity of what Sooyong achieved in capturing the images that we are now able to use in this film. Chris Morgan’s energy and enthusiasm will carry us off into his most challenging, most arduous and deeply affecting adventure yet.

KILLER WHALES FINS OF CHANGE

97

©TMFS

A remarkable story is unfolding in the Arctic. As the ice melts and the polar bear struggles to survive in a fast-warming world, another animal is moving into the northern regions of the planet – and it is starting to usurp the polar bear’s dominant role. Welcome the new top predator of the Arctic: the killer whale. In the last 50 years – and at an apparently accelerating rate – one third of the Arctic ice cap has melted, and more and more open sea is revealed in the summer months. The polar bear’s home ground is vanishing from under its feet. Meanwhile, scientists have started noting an ever-growing number of orcas in previously inaccessible Arctic waters during the summer months. And they are attacking not only narwhal, belugas and bowhead whales, but also seals – the preferred prey of polar bears. As the polar bear’s world is shrinking, the orca’s world is growing. These changes in environment have also been noticed first-hand by the local Inuit, who are key players in this story. The introduction of a new aquatic predator impacts their own hunting opportunities. In this extensive documentary, the fast-changing world of the Arctic will be explored as never before.

Kevin Richardson shares an extraordinary bond with Africa’s most fearsome predators. Together with them, he has experienced some real adventures. However, transporting 27 lions and 14 hyenas to a new home presents a different challenge. The lions’ new home will be a sanctuary on the edge of Dinokeng, a South African game reserve spanning 18,000 square metres. The huge task ahead includes planning and designing the new enclosures, and securing permits to move the animals. However, everything takes longer than predicted. And every day, the pressure increases to move the animals and open the lodge. Not only are the animals regularly rotated into new enclosures to prevent repetitive behaviour developing out of boredom, but Kevin also has to practise loading them in and out of the van so that later the move can go ahead smoothly. Weeks away from the move, the permits are turned down. When they are eventually granted, actually moving the animals presents the next major challenge. A few of them are not that keen anymore on climbing into the specially adapted van. Can the reluctant lions and hyenas eventually be persuaded to get on board with the move?

METEOR MENACE

101

©TMFS

February 15th, 2013 already is a historic date: out of the blue, a meteorite exploded in the earth’s atmosphere above the Russian region of Chelyabinsk. The massive shockwave destroyed countless windows and buildings. About 1,500 people were injured. The same day, the 40-meter Asteroid 2012 DA 14 passed the earth in a distance of only about 26,000 kilometers – the closest fly-by scientists ever recorded. These two events were not linked to each other – which only points out the menace of meteorites hitting our planet. In ‘Meteor Menace’ we put that threat into perspective. We visit the best-preserved meteorite impact in the world – Arizona’s Meteor Crater. It was caused around 50.000 years ago by an iron slug only 50 meters in diameter. And then there’s the ‘dino killer’, the meteorite that hit Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula seen by many experts as the death knell for most cretaceous creatures. Our mammal ancestors crawled out of that one, but will we be so lucky next time? Engaging computer graphics and spectacular eye-witness images combined with the expertise of some of the world’s leading specialists make this comprehensive portrait essential viewing. The recent events are a reminder of the ever-present ‘Meteor Menace’ and the need to understand more about these missiles from outer space.

Sand dunes a 1,000 feet high, shimmering mirages and scorching temperatures – these are the deserts of northern Namibia. Although this place looks totally inhospitable, there is a remarkable diversity of life found here. But how do animals survive in this desert kingdom? Although the dunes are barren, the dry riverbeds show signs of growth. And out of the heat, vast shapes appear. A herd of desert elephants ambles along the dry riverbed sniffing the ground with their lazy trunks. These remarkable creatures can smell the water underground and know where to find it. An abandoned well attracts a troop of chacma baboons, followed by a small herd of oryx and springbok and finally a group of jackals. None of them has seen the pride of desert lions lying in wait. It has been months without rain and even the desert-adapted elephants are finding it hard. Thunderstorms are rumbling in the Angolan highlands 500 miles to the north – all the desert life here in Namibia is dependent on the rain. But in some years it never arrives – and every creature of the sand rivers awaits its fate.

From the Nile’s mysterious sources to its delta on the Mediterranean coast, this majestic river has a length of 6,650 kilometres – and its natural wonders are just waiting to be discovered. The river’s source can be pinned down to the area of the Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda, a wonderland boasting 10m-high trees and rare, magical birds such as the Scarlet-tufted Sunbird or the shimmering Ruwenzori Turaco. The river passes Lake Victoria and Murchison Falls National Park, where the stars of Africa’s animal world – giraffes, elephants and lions – wait to make their appearance. After passing through the Sudd’s wetlands, the Nile slowly but steadily makes its way to its delta in the Mediterranean, through endless deserts and past Egypt’s famous pyramids. More than 80 million people live in the delta region, many of whom depend on the regular flooding of the world’s longest river for their livelihood. The fauna and flora in the Nile’s catchment area are as diverse and full of contrasts as the landscapes and nations along its course. This three-part series explores the many different faces of the world’s ultimate river.

Alien invaders are infiltrating our cities. Colourful, noisy and clever, they are multiplying rapidly – and they seem to enjoy their new, urban lifestyle. In Stuttgart, Germany, Yellow-headed Amazons swoop through the air, looking out of place against the grey buildings and drab skies. In Sydney, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos have become a common sight. And Argentina is seeing more and more established colonies of Burrowing Parrots in its towns. To counteract this development and help save the wild populations of parrots, a team of experts in Mexico is fostering a brood of Scarlet Macaws and will eventually try to reintegrate them into the wild. So, while their rural cousins are struggling to survive, the rise of the city parrot seems unstoppable – 70,000 birds have already found their way in. We encounter them in places where we would least expect them. But why are parrots doing so well in human environments? Are they outsmarting our native birds? Or is it because we adore these intelligent and colourful animals, and so encourage them to live alongside us? ‘Planet Parrot’ shows how these colourful, charismatic birds are increasingly turning a human world into a sanctuary of their own.

Unveiling a world of deceit and treachery worthy of any fictional thriller: ‘Plants behaving badly’. Two groups of plants exhibit such intriguing behaviour that a century and a half ago they attracted the attention of Charles Darwin. These same plants, orchids and their carnivorous relatives, still fascinate scientists today. Darwin’s book ‘On the Origin of Species’ shook the scientific world and far beyond. Yet it was his next book, devoted entirely to orchids, which filled in crucial gaps and clarified his revolutionary ideas. Orchids have an ethereal beauty, whether growing hundreds of feet up in a misty rainforest or along the verges of busy suburban roads. But their exotic flowers are shaped for just one purpose – to seduce pollinators. Many use sex as a lure by impersonating a female bee or wasp. But it’s not only about the orchids: scientists have recently shown that there are many more carnivorous plants than we ever thought existed. Welcome to the world of killer tomatoes and murderous potatoes! Even the more well-known carnivorous plants – sundews, flytraps and pitchers – are revealing new behaviour. Carnivorous plants have featured in many sci-fi films over the years, but the reality turns out to be far stranger than the fiction.

SECRETS OF THE EEL

111

©TMFS

Though much of the natural world is already discovered and understood, a few great mysteries remain. Consider the eel: snakelike, slimy and with a row of jagged teeth, yet aside from these fearsome qualities we know little about its life. The eels evolved over more than 50 million years ago and gave rise to 15 separate species. We still don’t know where it goes, what it does and how it dies. Hailed by poets as the ‘Siren of the North Sea’ and ‘Love’s Arrow on Earth’, this shadowy creature has fascinated researchers for centuries. James Prosek, artist, writer and eminent naturalist, will take on the mystery of the eel himself, shedding light on the animal and the strange behaviour it inspires to those who seek to know it. This documentary brings the dark world of the eel into focus. We embark on a journey, which takes us all over the world, from New Zealand to the Sargasso Sea and into the estuaries along the East coast of the United States. Swimming in vast and deep oceans and with typhoons to disguise its trail, the eel continues to elude biologists as if ‘Poseidon was trying to keep the eel’s secret’.

Britain. 3000 BC. Out of a violent, divided nation of early farmers a surprising new society is born. Unified and organized to such an extent that they can harness the expertise and drive to build the world’s greatest and most mysterious monument. Stonehenge. When the society disappears, it transforms into a new culture founded on metal and personal wealth. But the builders leave something more than the mammoth monument behind. They leave their bodies, buried in the earth. Leading Stonehenge expert, Professor Mike Parker Pearson, opens his groundbreaking discoveries to us so we can tell the story of Stonehenge in a unique way. It has always been shrouded in magic and secrets, but now, for the first time we will meet the people who worshiped, celebrated, lived and died in the shadow of Stonehenge. In the process, we trace the dramatic rise and fall of one of the greatest prehistoric societies in the world. This genuinely new narrative is based on the latest research conducted into the cremated and buried people at the site. The stones have mesmerized humans for hundreds of generations. But now we will meet the makers.

It is the most famous work of art in human history and has become an ideal of beauty and perfection. However, with the Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci left behind more than just the portrait of a woman. He also left us with one of the greatest mysteries of all time. The real circumstances surrounding the painting’s creation remain a secret. To this day, nobody knows who the beauty with the enigmatic smile really was, or when exactly Leonardo painted the portrait. There are only two contemporary reports that exist about the work – and although both sources are considered to be completely credible, they contradict each other. To reconcile these accounts, there would have to be two versions of the Mona Lisa. With the help of modern forensic methods, fresh sources and the discovery of a new painting – the ‘early Mona Lisa’ – it is now possible to weave together all the facts for the first time. Suddenly, all the contradictions make sense. And upon close examination, what was considered a simple copy for many years, has turned out to be the missing link, unlocking this ancient mystery.

Say hello to the most controversial dog on the planet! Not even the big bad wolf can touch the dingo when it comes to being feared and hated. It is after all a ‘baby killer’ in the eyes of many Australians. But is our perception of the dingo the right one? For the first time ever, a film crew sets out to discover what it takes to be a dingo. By following a pack as the pups emerge, we explore the intimate lives of dingoes, high in Australia’s Blue Mountains. For several years, dingo expert Brad Purcell has been following a pack in a secret Blue Mountain valley. Last year, for the first time, he observed adult dingoes teaching their pups how to kill. This training is essential if young dingoes are to learn the ropes and survive. Brad’s access offers a unique insight into Australia’s top land predator. Using the latest science, we explore how this controversial dog fits into the Australian landscape and how it has taken the role of top predator. Understanding what it takes to be a dingo has never been more crucial.

THE SECRETLIFE OF DEER

119

©TMFS

So much is known about deer. They are, in fact, the most highly studied mammals in the world. But once they retreat from our passing view, where do they go? When do they sleep? What secrets do they take with them into the forest? 30 million white-tailed deer live in the United States. They have begun to adapt themselves to living in a world of traffic, pets and backyards. In Cayuga Heights, New York, the suburb’s residents are trying to get used to this exceptional living arrangement. The deer can be spotted daily from kitchen windows and porches. Life in the suburbs is deer heaven – large areas of grass, no predators and plenty of water means their population is on a steady rise. In this documentary, white-tailed deer are outfitted with special cameras to take the viewer into their world. ‘Deercam’ allows us to see them in a new light – not frozen in the headlights of a car or as shy residents of the woods, but as intelligent and affectionate family animals. Special infra-red night vision, trail cams and multiple camera teams will show us the secret life of deer as they turn Cayuga Heights into their own friendly neighbourhood.

THE TULIP BUBBLE

121

©TMFS

The events in the Netherlands in the spring of 1637 were the first examples of speculative frenzy taking over a marketplace. Of course many more were to follow in the history of the world’s economics. But this one is special, a beautiful stand-alone, in a garden of falling graphs and rising statistics. In 1637 many Dutch citizens sold all they had for a few bulbs or ‘paper promises’ of potential tulip bulbs that didn’t even exist. It all started when tulips became the vogue in Holland in the early 17th century. Flower peddlers were soon faced with a problem: the demand for tulip bulbs was greater than the supply. For the first time ever, option certificates were issued for products that would be made in the future. Of course, trade in these certificates followed soon after that. Prices hit the roof. The tulip business bloomed and boomed. And then – one seller failed to receive the asking price for his bulbs. The news spread like wildfire. The bubble burst. And many more bubbles have followed. Understanding how it all began may be the ultimate lesson for the green thumbs of finance!

TO BEE ORNOT TO BEE

123

Honeybees are in a crisis: around the world bee populations have suffered dramatic losses over the last decades. Loyal companions in the production of our crops for centuries, the little insects seem to have been overburdened. However, their work is crucial for our survival, as a third of what we eat is pollinated by bees. The reasons for the mysterious bee die-offs are unclear. This leads scientists to reflect about possible scenarios of who will pollinate our crops in the future. One way out of the pollination crisis could be by beating the deadly varroa mite, a parasitic insect specialising in sucking the blood of bees and bee larvae. Another solution might be presented by the ‘killer bees’, a honeybee subspecies of the Africanized bee, which is resilient to the mites – but dangerous to men and other bees alike. Can the killer bees be tamed? Around the world, there also exists a rich and diverse variety of native wild bees, most of which have been ignored until today. Will one of them take over? The time has come to look closely at all the bees out there and understand the biology of each species.

The wings of cliff swallows in Nebraska are getting shorter – while female turtles in Chesapeake Bay are getting larger. On the Galapagos Islands, two species of finches are developing back into one. Increasing numbers of peregrine falcons are living in urban areas – and have adapted their behaviour: thanks to the city lights, they have learnt to hunt at night. What has happened to evolution? The answer is very simple: us. Life emerged three and a half billion years ago and since then has evolved into a dazzling variety of shapes and forms. Species that are better adapted to their environment survive, selected by nature to breed and pass on their genes to the next generation through a process called natural selection. Humans have played a part in this new development as well, as they have transformed our planet beyond recognition – turning grasslands and forests into fields and cities, and polluting the air and water, thus changing the environment of many animals. All of these changes have altered the course of evolution – in some surprising and unexpected ways. The process known as natural selection has now taken on another, quite different dimension: ‘Unnatural Selection’.

At the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, the white stallions perform a breathtaking display of beauty and power that celebrates a perfect harmony between horse and rider. These carefully choreographed and synchronized movements were originally intended for war. Then, only the strongest and most athletic of the horses were chosen. The Lipizzaner stallion was bred for his courage, his strength and his character. Yet, he is at heart gentle and sensitive, responsive to praise, but rebellious to the use of force against him. The performance of the white stallions is the demonstration of a unique relationship between horse and rider, each reliant upon the other. ‘White Beauty’ is a stunning documentary about the history of the oldest breed of horse in the world. Using the latest technology of high definition and digital ultra-high speed cameras, this film celebrates the classical art of dressage when horse and rider become one in a ballet of exquisite grace and beauty.

Also available as ‘Legendary White Stallions‘ (1 x 53 min), highlighting the history of the Lipizzaners‘ breed from the deserts of Morocco to the pastures around the Piber Federal Stud in western Styria, until their time in the famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna.

This is the story of two remarkable – and extremely rare – wild white lion cubs on their journey to adulthood. Both are female, sisters born as white as snow in May 2009 in South Africa’s Kruger Park. Growing up in this vast, wild wilderness they must not only overcome the same survival challenges that all young lion cubs face, they must also overcome the threats their high visibility brings. In the African bush, anything unusual stands out and is often eliminated by eagle-eyed predators. Will our cubs survive? The odds are stacked against them – 80 per cent of all newborn lion cubs don’t make it to adulthood. ‘White Lions - Born Wild’ is a true wildlife story, with strong characters and closely studied behaviour. We follow the cubs’ progress as they embark on the pathway to adulthood, learning to hunt, learning to avoid danger, learning to live in their white coats. This is a strong behaviour-led film, a coming-of-age story of a very rare and unusual pair of lions. Through their eyes we learn what it is really like to be a lion in Africa.

Fabulous landscapes and spectacular wildlife: O Canada! This vast wild country, boasting the longest coastline in the world with shores on three oceans, has the greatest north-south latitude range of any nation in the world. Countless generations of humans have shaped Canada’s nature for their own purposes and their own survival, ever since the kilometer-thick ice began to melt and the land beneath was exposed. Over time, next to humans an array of plants and animals invaded these regions as well – mammoths, moose and musk ox were common sights in the vast plains of what now is Canada. In this stunning documentary, a journey of exploration is at hand – to re-discover this remarkable and beautiful land with its fabulous landscapes and wildlife, seen through fresh eyes. Filming inside a beaver’s lodge, following the track of bears, swimming deep underwater alongside whales or taking a macro-look at ice crystals: this production has it all. A four-part documentary, ‘Wild Canada’ features never-before-seen wildlife stories, stunning landscapes, dramatic reconstructions of historical events and state-of-the-art graphics and CGI, to paint an awe-inspiring picture of a land full of amazing wildlife, shaped by man over thousands of years.

YOU, PLANETAN EXPLORATION IN 3DIt’s an unknown planet, yet it seems strangely familiar: deep canyons and crevices scar the landscape, rugged mountain ranges tower over vast plains, humid jungles and acidic lakes hide creatures unknown to most – ferocious predators, peaceful grazers, cunning quick-change artists. But this alien planet is not from outer space. This planet is you. At any given moment, we are the human habitat of 100 trillion organisms, almost all of them hidden from our naked eye. The average human plays host to four pounds of alien creatures that inhabit every nook and cranny of our body. Scientists are just beginning to understand the real dimensions of this biodiversity. This extraordinary 3D adventure takes us on a journey into an inner world few of us are aware of. Specially developed electron microscope imaging reveals the dramatic interactions happening in our body tissues when microbes, parasites, cells and viruses fight and co-operate. We combine images from the latest scanning electron microscopes with CGI to fly over micro-landscapes and travel through cells and organs as we explore what makes this amazing eco-system work.

DOCTORSWITHOUT BORDERSDEDICATED TO LIFE

They travel around the globe to care and to cure, dare to enter crisis zones and repeatedly put themselves in danger as they carry out their missions: the people from ‘Doctors without Borders’. Who are these men and women? What do they think? What do they feel? ‘Dedicated to Life’ gives an insight into the reality of their lives between home and the frontline. Maarten is currently the only doctor on site in a refugee camp in South Sudan, where more than 40,000 people are living under very difficult hygienic conditions. “It teaches you to be humble, it teaches you to be thankful for the things you actually have”, he reflects as he recalls his battle against a recent outbreak of hepatitis E. Not all of them are doctors: Erik, a civil engineer and water technician, is responsible for ensuring a functioning supply of drinking water in an even bigger camp. ‘Dedicated to Life’ portrays the lives of these doctors, engineers, nurses, logistics experts and a host of other support personnel as they really are: no pathos, no clichés, no hero cult. As the experienced project-coordinator Renate says, “We are not looking for heroes – just be yourself, be professional and make every moment of it count”.

HARNASWILDLIFE RESCUE CAMP

©TMFS

Harnas is a large farm in southern Africa that offers shelter to abandoned wild animals. The van der Merwe family who own the farm take on volunteers from all over the world to help run their animal orphanage: the young people come to meet exotic animals and to get a taste of the ‘real’ Africa. City slickers from London, New York and Frankfurt suddenly become foster parents to baby leopards. They get bitten by baboons and scared by ferocious wild dogs. But they are safe, protected by characters like Frikkie, the hard-boiled Namibian cowboy who gives the kids a hard time; by Hermann, the gentle giant who has spent most of his life in the bush; and by Schalk van der Merwe, former football pro and manager of Harnas, who has an almost eerie ability to talk and walk with lions. Harnas – Wildlife Rescue Camp is the story of the animals living at Harnas and some amazing people who do all they can to help them.

An ex-NASA-scientist, who, together with an amateur submarine engineer, builds a rocket which will be launched into space. A passionate scientist engaging himself in the fields of biology and robotics, who taught himself to communicate with bees. A dedicated marine biologist and diver, who explores a nearly unknown world. An enthusiastic chef, who builds his own amusement park in the backyard of his restaurant. A creative geographer, who thought of constructing a globe just for kicks, resulting in him founding a whole company. The first officially acknowledged cyborg ever, and his amazing story. Showing the audience at home how science works nowadays is the ultimate aim of these entertaining as well as informative mini-documentaries which make up ‘SCIENCE™’.

BOMBS AWAYAt the end of World War 2, the world’s largest art collection was stored in the salt mines of Altaussee, Austria. Next to it were crates full of bombs that the Nazis intended to use to destroy the mine, in order to keep more than 6,000 art treasures from falling into the hands of the enemy. The film Bombs Away depicts the enthralling events surrounding the mine, and shows the circumstances under which the Rembrandts, Vermeers, Breugels, Raphaels, Titians, Michelangelos and the Ghent Altarpiece were saved. In a race against time, two miners, Alois Raudaschl and Hermann König, foiled the detonation plan, risking their lives in the process. One was a member of the NSDAP, the other had joined the resistance. At the decisive moment, the two friends mobilised all crucial parties involved in the rescue operation. At that time, the two weren’t aware of the value of the artworks. Saving the mines, however, meant that many of Europe’s most valuable art treasures, were rescued.

This documentary tells the true story behind the events that inspired Hollywood’s The Monuments Men, a major motion picture that hit theatres in early 2014.

DAVID LAMAOFF LIMITS ON ROCK AND ICEThis personal portrait explores the life of climber David Lama, an exceptional talent and all-round alpine specialist. Lama, 23, is the son of an Austrian mother and a Nepalese father. He grew up in Tyrol surrounded by mountains. He was only five when he attracted the attention of legendary mountaineer Peter Habeler; he was only 10 when he climbed his first 8a-route. Lama has won many titles, including both Youth World and European champion in bouldering. In 2010, he left the indoor climbing walls and started concentrating exclusively on mountaineering. It was in 2012 that he set out for the first free ascent of the ‘Compressor route’ on Cerro Torre in Patagonia. The great mountaineer Reinhold Messner shows enormous respect for David Lama’s performance. He says: ‘When you were doing the freeclimbing up Cerro Torre we were full of awe – including me. We were standing there, gaping with our mouths open, saying ‘That’s it…’

MILLE MIGLIA –THE LEGENDARY 1000 MILES OF BRESCIAThe legendary Mille Miglia was an open-road endurance rallye held 24 times on the roads of northern and central Italy from 1927 until 1957. In its heyday, the round race attracted an estimated five million spectators. The report follows today’s participants as they take their classic racing cars to the treacherous road from Brescia to Rome, recreating the spirit of what experts call the world’s most beautiful car rallye. Many of the superb motors are collectors’ items worth millions of dollars. Like its Sicilian predecessor, the Targa Florio, and the Carrera Panamericana that came after, the Mille Miglia brought Gran Turismo sports cars by Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche to prominence. The Mille Miglia lives on, not only in the hearts of the drivers.

SAVINGTHE WHALE An exclusive report on the activities of Thomas Motsch and the Sea Shepherds as they try to prevent the slaughter of pilot whales off the Faroe Islands. Here, right on Europe’s doorstep, large-scale drive hunts (“grindadráps” in Faroese) are held several times a year to round up and butcher the marine mammals. The semi-autonomous islands enjoy unique political status as part of the kingdom of Denmark without being part of the EU. Providing insights into local traditions and views, the report gives locals a voice to defend their traditional hunts. We learn Faroese society is steeped in tradition: “Only a grindadráp makes a true man of a Faroese.” Is confrontation the only way to prevent future grindadráps? Can education begin to make a positive difference?

SILENT NIGHTTHE REAL STORYIn 1831, the Strasser family, from Laimach in the Zillertal valley, made their way to Leipzig in Germany, where four of Strasser children performed Stille Nacht outside Austria for the first time. From there, the carol has made a triumphal march all over the world. One hundred and eighty years later, it has been translated into more than 300 languages and acknowledged as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

This documentary retraces the Strassers’ arduous journey, shooting in locations including Leipzig and the small Strasser house in Laimach. Four amateur actors and singers from the Zillertal valley play the Strasser siblings. Their voices are impressive.

THE POWER OF SCULPTURE

THE BULL OF STEEL

The works of Austrian sculptor, architect and painter Jos Pirkner unite energy, vision and sensitivity. The film presents the distinctive, passionate and committed artist. We witness the creation of an architectural sculpture designed by Jos Pirkner. Europe’s largest bronze features a herd of raging, oversized bulls that stampede out of Red Bull’s volcano-shaped headquarters in Fuschl, Austria, like a lava stream. “Die Bullen von Fuschl” is a synthesis of the arts that blends space, sculpture and nature in an eye-catching, idiosyncratic statement.

It must be the biggest bull in the world. Completely covered in gold leaf, its horns alone span 7 metres. Assembled from 1,228 pieces of corten steel, the “Stahlbulle” or Bull of Steel is 14.6 metres high and weighs 68 metric tons. Visible for miles around and showing every sign of having been built to last, the oversized creature stands guard at the new Red Bull racetrack at Spielberg in Austria’s Steiermark region. We reveal how artists Martin Kölldorfer and Clemens Neugebauer created the gigantic sculpture, from the initial drafts to its completion. Come and see how this new landmark came into being.

The air around us and the ground beneath our feet are teeming with life. But we are deceived into thinking that apple trees in colourful country gardens or pristine mountain pastures are peaceful idylls. Hidden Worlds documents tragedies unfolding in a clump of weeds, on a twig or tree branch, or on the underside of a blade of grass. Everywhere it looks, the HD microscope reveals hunters and their prey – spiders murdering grasshoppers, millipedes assaulting ringed worms, butterfly larvae devouring springtails, the destruction brought on by a gust of wind or a heavy shower.

Filmmaker Berndt Welz has used state-of-the-art camera equipment to produce a unique nature documentary. In three dramatic episodes, Hidden Worlds unveils the struggle for survival in nature’s usually invisible microcosm.

Baffling natural phenomena, cryptic inscriptions and mysterious relics of long-ago cultures – we expect to find them in Egypt or Mexico. Countless fascinating phenomena, however, are awaiting discovery in Europe, in the Alpine crescent between the Danube and the Adriatic. A team of archaeologists, researchers and scientists embark on an exciting adventure to discover mankind’s ultimate mysteries. How did hieroglyphs get to Castle Schönbrunn, Vienna? Where do Styria’s secret underground passages lead? What’s the story of the prehistoric pyramids in Visoko, Bosnia? The twelve fascinating episodes of Phaenomania take a close look at these and many more unsolved mysteries.

The past comes alive in re-enacted historic scenes and sophisticated computer animations based on field research and interviews with experts and witnesses. This is a series that throws a light on extraordinary, obscure and possibly supernatural phenomena.

The fact that man is fragile when exposed to the elements of nature probably becomes most evident in the high mountains. In the Alps, The Four Elements of air, earth, fire and water define life; they stand for danger and untamed nature, and explain the region’s enduring attraction. In this impressive four-part documentary, Tyrolean meteorologist and geophysicist Norbert Span explores their fascination. He ventures up and out to feel each element with all his senses. The air is very thin around Europe’s highest inhabited building. The Tagliamento, one of Europe’s last truly wild rivers, runs in white spate. Span takes a foehn wind-driven balloon ride. During a thunderstorm in Appenzell, he witnesses truly frightening lightning bolts. Born of and in the Alps, he also has a very personal view of this iconic area.

The Four Elements presents spectacular new images of natural phenomena that illustrate nature’s elementary powers, and how people have been coping with them.
