You must learn to be responsible for your own happiness and your relationships with others: The most important relationship in life is the one with yourself. You must be aware of your goals in life: You cannot live all the time like you are driving to an unknown destination. To succeed in life you must know your potential. enjoying it. Thinking of ways which goals can be achieved with small and sure steps: Give yourself a reward for each “victory “ no matter how modest it seems to be. Sharing your happiness with others can be contagious! Live with intensity: Happiness never comes to you-you are the one to find it! There are people who don't care how many problems stand in their way; they still end up finding happiness. Others look at them wondering, how come they always find reasons to be happy? Happiness can be achieved by everyone. All we need to do is to know how to live it. By: Rodica V. Level 5 Lesley’s class Halton region MY JOB Where do you think you can meet many kinds of people? Where do you think you can really use money to make money? Yes, that’s it- the Casino. I'm sure you got it. The

Casino may be a wonderful world for all of you, but for me, that's a very special workplace. I'm a dealer at the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino. My work is dealing card games. The first game I learned was Blackjack. Blackjack is a kind of card game where if you get a total of 21 points in the first two cards (eg.A.10,A.J, A.Q,A.K), that is called Blackjack. You'll lose if you go over the total value of 21 points in the cards you get and you'll win if you beat the dealer. Have you ever heard of it? If you have been to the Casino recently, you would not miss it because that is the most popular game there. It makes everyone crazy. Now I can also do some other games, like Three Card Poker, Let it Ride, etc. Let it Ride is another kind of card game. You play three cards with the dealer's two cards. You win if you get a pair of 10's or better; otherwise you lose your money. They are fun games for the customers but boring for me because I play them so often. There are still many games I need to learn, like Mini-mac, PaiGow (a kind of Chinese poker), Poker, etc. It's a long road for me to go. I work the night shift from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. or from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. I work both shifts because I'm part-time. If you are a full-time worker, you can choose the shift you want. There are still other shifts in our casino, like day and graveyard shifts, but the night shift is the busiest shift and usually has the best tips.

As a dealer in the Casino, I'm pretty new compared with others who have worked there for more than ten years. It's not a tough job, but it's also not an easy one either. Although that's not too hard on your body, it's hard on your mind because you have to face so many complaints everyday, and sometimes people’s behaviour is so rude, you just can't stand it. You feel hurt about it. Well, that is the dealer's job. Anyway, I still enjoy it so far. By: Hui P. Level 4 Susan M.’s class Peel region THE EVILS OF TOBACCO There are more than 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke, including 43 cancer causing carcinogenic compounds and 400 other toxins. Smoking causes more than 30% of all deaths from cancer, 90% of deaths from lung cancer, and has replaced breast cancer as the leading cause of death due to cancer for Canadian women. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and chronic lung diseases. Smoking has been linked to about 90 percent of all lung cancer cases. Smoking is responsible for about a quarter of heart attack deaths. There is a strong association between smoking and cancer of the pancreas, kidney, and bladder. About 75% of deaths from chronic bronchitis and emphysema are linked to smoking. These facts show the shocking truth about the real hazards of smoking. Smoking is also associated with cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach, cervix, and urethra. The

Page 3: NEWSLINC - linchsnational.ca · you already have, not to have what you e you can. That does not mean you don’t have goals in your life. Happiness is not something lingering around

overall rates of death from cancer are twice as high among smokers as among nonsmokers, with heavy smokers having rates that are four times greater than those of nonsmokers. On average, smoking removes 15 years from a smoker's expected life span.

MARCH NEWSLINC 3

Second hand smoke has also been shown to be a major risk factor in the development of disease in non-smokers. Some of the immediate effects of passive smoking include eye irritation, headache, cough, sore throat, dizziness and nausea. Adults with asthma can experience a significant decline in lung function when exposed, while new cases of asthma may be induced in children whose parents smoke. Short-term exposure to tobacco smoke also has an immeasurable effect on the heart in non-smokers. Just 30 minutes of exposure is enough to reduce coronary blood flow. The US Environmental Protection Agency has classified environmental tobacco smoke as a class A (known human) carcinogen along with asbestos, arsenic, benzene and radon gas. Now I would like to discuss some of the mechanism involved in the pathogenesis. Mucus clearance from your lungs is done by cilia, tiny hair like projections lining the inside of the lungs which constantly move dirt,

the throat where they can be swallowed. Cilia beat at about 16 times per second. A decrease in this rate impairs mucociliary clearance. Cigarette smoke paralyzes the cilia. Cigarette smoke, even second hand smoke causes the lungs to become clogged with thick secretions of mucus, containing bacteria and dead white blood cells. When smokers awake, they cough because their lungs are attempting to clear this mucus. When cilia are repeatedly exposed to smoke over a long period of time, their action is permanently destroyed. This makes smokers' lungs more exposed to dangers of smoking than before. So it’s like a vicious cycle.

bacteria, and other irritants up into

Children of smokers have an increased risk of following conditions: Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexpected, sudden death of any infant or child under the age of one in which an autopsy does not show an explainable cause of death. Studies show that there is an increased risk of this syndrome if the parents are smokers. Pneumonias are also very common in these babies whose parents smoke. Along with pneumonias, ear and throat infections are also very frequent. These frequent infections will retard the growth of a child. Asthmatic children who are exposed to secondhand smoke have their condition made worse.

Now let’s discuss something about smoking cessation. Smoking cessation has major and immediate health benefits for men and women of all ages. For example, persons who quit smoking before age 50 have one-half the risk of dying in the next 15 years compared with continuing smokers. Smoking cessation decreases the risk of lung cancer, other cancers, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung disease. Women who stop smoking before pregnancy or during the first 3 to 4 months of pregnancy reduce their risk of having a low birth weight baby to that of women who never smoked. Cigarette smoking is not only hazardous to health but also, it is a large burden financially. It is a big burden on one's household budget. It’s a costly habit. Think about it, if you smoke an average 20-a-day, you will smoke 7,300 cigarettes a year. Even if you buy cheaper brands, it means you spend at least 1,500 dollars on cigarettes every year.
