Students receive awards for our school values at WGS, B-7 whole school assemblies

Dear families and friends,

Governing Council Update Governing Council met last Tuesday evening to consider a range of issues including fundraising, school uniform and the development of an orchard. The orchard is a combined project with school and facilities and will create an addition to our kitchen- garden. Horticulturalists have been consulted regarding the location and the types of plants identified. To supplement our Uniform the suppliers have suggested a spray jacket that will keep our students warm and dry over winter months. The navy jacket is line with High School uniforms and will have our logo emblazoned on it. At the present we have many older students wearing the school T-shirt but using a range of sports jackets to keep themselves warm; most practical but detracting from our sense of identity and pride in wearing Woodville Gardens School B-7 uniform pieces. Fundraising is a strength of our Year 6/7 Ambassadors; each term raising money through the casual clothes day for worthy causes such as Heart Kids, UNICEF, Women’s & Children’s Hospital. Governing Council have approved a raffle, to be drawn on Sports day, that will support our students to learn compassion towards others, along with entrepreneurial skills. They have also proposed that we use fundraising for both worthy external causes and to supplement some of our own programs, eg. supporting families with costs of camps etc.

Student Awards Whole School Awards are being presented at our assemblies in Weeks 3, 6 and 10. This has become a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge students who

demonstrate School Values (Fairness, Responsibility & Respect) through their actions and dispositions towards learning, each other and members of the school community.

ARC Class Writing - Character descriptions The Primary Arc Class has been developing their

vocabulary and descriptive language using pirates as a stimulus. The students had to create a profile of their pirates describing them and their personalities. Students designed an image and selected words; brave,

rude, fierce, hairy, repulsive to give their images personality. Kind regards,

BLUE LEARNING AREA PARLIAMENT HOUSE VISIT On Friday Week 2, the year 7 students went on an excursion to Parliament House. At Parliament House, met the Leader of the Opposition Peter Malinauskas. Peter showed us the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council chamber. The House of Assembly or The Lower House featured green interior, representing the gathering of common people. Peter explained that the main priority of the House of Assembly was to debate policies and to negotiate regulations. The left side of the House of Assembly represented the current Government of South Australia and the right side of the House of Assembly represented the Opposition. The leader of the current Government of South Australia had a title of Honourable. The Leader of the Opposition had a title of Shadow Minister. The House of Assembly also had a role called Speaker of Assembly, who mainly kept debates organised and civilised. Peter then showed us the Legislative Council chamber or the Upper House which featured red interior, representing royalty. The Legislative Council were mainly responsible to decide if a law, that had passed the House of Assembly, was to be passed as an official law. Members of the Legislative Council were politicians who came from different parties such as Australian Labor Party and Liberal Party of Australia. These politicians were elected from both the 2014 election and the 2018 election. The Legislative Council also had a role called President who had a similar objective as the Speaker of Assembly. At the end of our excursion, Peter offered us a photo with him and a large majority of us decided to take a picture. By Ryan Nguyen

SCIENCE ALIVE

On Friday the 3rd of August all of the Year 7’s went to Wayville Showgrounds for Science Alive. Thousands of school students from all around South Australia attended. We were able to look at 100’s of different stalls and interact with virtual reality, reptiles, magnetic machines, robots and many other science based learning activities. There were live performances where we saw Science in action and we talked to experts in various fields about possible career pathways. We all found it very interesting and we enjoyed the excursion.

This term in the Blue Building, we have started to do Enterprise as a unit. Enterprise is a process of business, advertising, making and selling. Students in the blue building are split up every Friday afternoon and have mentors in each class. We all have groups of 2-3 people and have had a choice to select what we want to make and sell.

The unit started with an idea, an idea that we can turn into a product, which in turn will hopefully make a profit. After completing a Business Plan we were given $40 each to purchase the items that we need to make our product. By the end of this semester we have to give our $40 back and any profit will either go to charity or help the school in some way.

We will be having a Market Day where you can come in with your class to buy our fantastic products. Some of the products you will be able to purchase are Bookmarks, Keychains, Bracelets, Pillows, String Art, and soooooo much more….

Market Day: Week 10, Tuesday. The gym will be opened from 8:35am

A roster will be sent to class teachers which will include market times for classes to attend.

We all hope to see you all at our Week 10 Tuesday

Enterprise Day!

Newsletter 23rd August , 2018

Ms Paula’s year 2 class have been working on Narrative Writing. We discussed the importance of children

having a main character in their story. As the author, the children must also let their reader know what problem

the main character has. To create interest and tension for the reader, the children must also write ways their

main character tries to solve their problem. As a class, Room 609 jointly constructed the following. After that,

the children then wrote their own story.

The Cranky Dragon The cranky dragon could not sleep. He left his cave and yelled “Let me sleep!” but the animals kept having their party. So, the cranky dragon blew fire and the party stopped. BUT, when the cranky dragon went back into his cave. They started the party again, but this time it was louder. The cranky dragon stomped outside his cave again and he took all the party speakers and threw them into the volcano. But it started raining so all the party followed the cranky dragon into his cave and they all partied together. By Room 609
