A Taste of Things to Come

BRQA Beer Tasting Re-viewBy Bennett Dixon

For a moment, it felt like I’d returned to my high school’s chemistry lab—sterile beakers, pipettes, and the ominous emergency chemical showers

surrounded me. But as the beer began flowing, the similarities quickly disappeared. This was no stuffy academic pursuit—it was Friday Beer Tasting at Miller’s Beer Research and Quality Assurance (BRQA).

I’d heard a lot about this ritual from other full-timers here, but had yet to make it down myself. Now, as I made my way through the corridors lined with

mysterious brewing

equipment, I wondered what the

folks in BRQA would be serving today. Around the next corner lay the answer to my musings.

Laid out neatly on a table were five varieties of Full Sail beers. A small craft brewer in Hood River, Oregon, Full Sail is the latest addition to the SAB Miller family, and today would be my formal introduction to their handiwork.

The first beer I tried was IPA (India Pale Ale). The name is

derived from the fact that the beer was formulated to withstand the long journey to British troops stationed in India. I was just happy this particular bottle withstood the journey to me. I like pale ales and this fruity variety suited my palate nicely.

Next, I sampled the Amber Ale. Related to Pale Ale in its composition, the Amber Ale is distinguished not only by its darker coloring, but also by its taste—bolder than that of the Pale Ale. I also detected a pleasant hint of caramel in this smooth-finishing ale.

SUMMERFEST was a big hit with many of the interns, both locals and out-of-towners. The 11-day festival brought acts such as The Neville Brothers, Weird Al Yankovic, LL Cool J, Everclear, Sum 41, and India Arie, just to name a few. Add to that, a seem-ingly never-ending supply of Miller Lite, the official beer of SUMMER-FEST, and you have a great time. So now that SUMMERFEST is over, what’s an intern to do? The next few weekends are sure to keep you in the festive mood, as different cultures are celebrated on the SUMMERFEST grounds and throughout Milwaukee.

The most visually arresting package belonged to that of Full Sail’s Hang Time. Bottles of this brand feature a label that’s deliberately printed upside-down (a tip of the cap to its sailboarding-inspired name). True to its extreme nature, Hang Time pulls no punches when it comes to taste—robust and flavorful, but with a refreshing finish that left me wanting more.

There were still two other Full Sail brands left to try—Rip Curl and Pale (in addition to the old standbys—Miller Lite, Miller Genuine Draft, and Miller High Life). But alas, it was now 4:30 and I still had to attend a meeting. All the more reason to return to BRQA next Friday.

Town via the University of Brussels)

Number of Years with Miller: 11 enthusiastic years!

First Job at Miller: Director of Research & Development in BRQA (which was then called the Master Brewers Division)

Most Rewarding Project: Dr. Ryder enjoys all of his projects and the opportunity to create “technical magic.” His first project at Miller was Miller Clear Beer (the world’s first colorless beer).

Career Mentor: His first (not only) was Mick Stewart, Chief Brewer, at South African Breweries Ltd. in Johannesburg, South Africa

Favorite Miller Product: Dr. Ryder genuinely likes all the quality Miller products. When forced to choose, he admitted to consuming the most of Miller Lite.

Favorite Miller Commercial: Campaign in the U.K. for Miller Pilsner that ran 4-5 years ago in which Johnny Miller hosted a three minute talk show called “Miller Time.” Dr. Ryder appreciated the dry, British humor.

Draft/Bottle/Can: Draft (as long as the glass is beer clean)

Popcorn or Pretzels: Pretzels make a better beer snack (popcorn has stronger flavors that

Restaurant Review‘The Menu’ The Menu’

By: Shanita Penny

Dozens of charming sidewalk cafés and food vendors offer the best in French, Cajun and local fare at Bastille Days to satisfy every craving. Last Friday a small group of interns braved the downtown traffic and made our way down to Bastille Days 2003.

There were vendors lined up on both sides of the streets and so many people you couldn’t even see the road. The aroma of beignets, éclairs, dessert and entrée crêpes, cakes, French style hot sandwiches, croque-monsieur, spicy blackened sandwiches, fresh breads, cheeses and much more filled the air as we inched along through the crowd.

“There’s a ticket booth” I hysterically screamed as my stomach contin-ued to growl louder than the bands playing. After we purchased tick-ets, it was then time to decide which vendor we would visit for lunch.

The three of us enjoyed an Italian beef sandwich, a huge meatball and provolone sandwich, and several brats for an anonymous intern with a very big appetite (Nick). French wines and champagnes, lemonade, café au lait were available but many visitors chose Miller beers to com-pliment their meals.

As we sat talking, it started to rain and we promptly made our way back to Miller Brewing Company. Normally I suggest that you run out and try the restaurant that I have highlighted, but you will have to wait until next summer to experience Bastille Days!

interfere with the pure flavor of great Miller beer)

Favorite Quote: “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” By Benjamin Franklin (used by CEO Norman Adami at this year’s National Sales Meeting)

Words of Advice: “You can do anything that you believe you can do.”

What Dr. Ryder Wants You to Know: Miller makes thirst worthwhile!

By: Christina JimenezThe world’s first golden beer. In 1842 in the Czech Republic town of Pilsen, Pilsner Urquell was created. In the simplest terms, the

word Pilsner describes an especially hoppy, golden beer brewed in the town of Pilsen a.k.a. the original source. Although

several brews have taken on the name Pilsner or Pilsener, depending on the spelling preference, Miller’s Pilsner Urquell is the only true Pilsner. The reason for Pilsner Urquell’s success: a new and refreshing taste, unlike that of the preceding dark and cloudy beers. Hence the phrase, “In the beginning there was darkness… then in 1842 we found the light.” Much copied but never duplicated, Pilsner Urquell delivers one of the most distinctive beer drinking experiences anywhere, providing a soft, clean, dry, and smooth taste in your palate. The reason for the taste: soft water, quality

barley and triple decoction. This delightfully brewed quencher, is now available in over 50 countries worldwide, thank the heavens.

TOP TEN: THINGS OVERHEARD AT THE INTERN BOWLING NIGHT

By Bennett Dixon“Sir, you must be wearing pants to bowl.”

“That guy works at Miller?”“Now I know why they’re called ‘low-rise’ jeans.”

“I’m sorry Gabe, you must be 21 to enter.”“Please contain your bowling to your own lane.”

“Is that a Mich Ultra you’re drinking?”“Landmark Lanes insists you return our shoes to us, Mr. Hartung.”

“Hey, you stole our balls!”“Bennett needs just one more strike for another perfect 300-game?”

“We’re going to have to ask you to leave, sir.”

From Intern to Full Time By Sarah Mueller

How he came to Miller: I had an internship lined up with a company in New York City. Unfortunately, they rescinded their offer in February. In April, a professor of mine put me in contact with Jim Lorino, and the rest is history.Biggest lesson learned: Speak up. You may be an intern but people look to you for new ideas and directions. When you have an idea (no matter how crazy), bring it up. It adds to the collective dialogue and could change the way people look at a problem.Advice for current interns: Be curious and be aggressive. Use your time as an intern to get as much exposure to the different parts of Miller’s business as possible. If there is an area of the company that interests you but is not in your department, find a way to sit with someone from that department. Most memorable experience: 2002 Miller Intern Volleyball team. We didn’t always win, but we always had more beer than the other team.Favorite Miller product: High Life Light/LiteAdditional comments: Hey, we work for the company that makes Miller Time, for me that is a source of pride and passion. Hopefully it is for you too. So, the next time you are out find a way to show your pride. It can be as simple as ordering a bottle instead of a draft, thanking (and tipping) the bartender for stocking Miller, or buying a round of Miller for the table that’s drinking Bud. After all, when we are out on the town we are all Miller salespeople.

BEER BUZZLager Lore and other True Stories

By Bennett DixonThis edition of Beer Buzz reveals the ancient city of Babylon to be a hotbed of beer-based legend: In their efforts to regulate beer quality, the ancient

Babylonians, who were among history's earliest brewers, decreed that any commercial beer-maker who sold unfit beer would be drowned in his/her own libation.

In ancient Babylon, women brewers also assumed the role of temple priestesses. The goddess Siris was the patron of beer.

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the "honey month", or what we know today as the "honeymoon".

Matt Kossen, 26, is currently working for Miller Brewing Company as a Transportation Operations Planner. He has been employed with the company full-time as of May this year. Matt oversees Miller’s Load Control Center, which is responsible for all shipments to distributors that come from a brewery other than their primary brewery.

Prior to becoming a permanent addition to the company he worked as a transportation intern from May of 2002 through August of 2003. He attended Michigan State University and graduated with a MBA this past May. Growing up Matt had dreams of becoming a Professional Water Skier, but found he enjoyed Miller Time, full-time, much better.
