I am delighted to do so and I am sure that you will all wish to join me in wishing Duncan and Pat well. In this Newsletter, you will find the latest news of the Wing’s activities as well as various items already reported via the Association website and, of course, the all- important calling notice for this year’s Reunion Dinner and AGM. There is news too of people on the move: having served for 4 years as Welfare and Publicity Member, Des Peters is seeking to concentrate on other things. Des’s knowledge and experience, from his active role with the RAF Association, have been greatly appreciated in keeping the Chairman and Treasurer on the ‘straight and narrow’. Thank you again Des for your contribution and dedication, we look forward to your continued support as a member – but please don’t think up too many awkward questions from the floor! Des’s place is ably taken by Paul Giles, a relatively recent retiree from the Service and the Wing. Since his retirement, Paul has been a SSAFA Case Worker and is thus ideally placed to join the Association Committee – a very warm welcome! Also on the move is OC TSW, Wg Cdr Tim Etches, who is leaving the Service; we wish Tim good fortune in his future career. Tim’s successor is something of a milestone, she is Wg Cdr Suzanne Perkins, the first female boss of the Wing; we also wish Suzanne a very warm welcome as she steers the unit – for which we have so much affection – at the outset of its second 40 years of making history. Suzanne, we wish you well in joining the long list of distinguished OCs and look forward to working with you to support the TSW – and Servicing Commando – family (old and new). Having been given the chance, it would be remiss of me, as Treasurer, not to use the opportunity to publish a plea! The significant majority of our members pay subscriptions by Standing Order, for which a big thanks, as it makes my task so much simpler; however, to those who still prefer to pay by annual cheque, please save me the work of chasing you every year by either considering converting to SO payment or, as several already do (thank you too!), by paying for Chairman: Duncan Grant, Tel: 07803 908529 E-mail: [email protected] Treasurer: Tim Newstead, Tel: 07849 823551 E-mail: [email protected] Membership Martin Williams, Tel: 01785 245053 E-mail: [email protected] Secretary Welfare & Paul Giles, Tel: 01785 214558 E-Mail: [email protected] Publicity

NEWSLETTER – WINTER 2011

INTRODUCTION BY THE TREASURER

Owing to family illness, Duncan has asked me to put together this edition of the Newsletter. I am delighted to do so and I am sure that you will all wish to join me in wishing Duncan and Pat well. In this Newsletter, you will find the latest news of the Wing’s activities as well as various items already reported via the Association website and, of course, the all-important calling notice for this year’s Reunion Dinner and AGM. Since his retirement,

Paul has been a SSAFA Case Worker and is thus ideally placed to join the Association Committee – a very warm welcome! The significant majority of our members pay subscriptions by Standing Order, for which a big thanks, as it makes my task so much simpler; however, to those who still prefer to pay by annual cheque, please save me the work of chasing you every year by either considering converting to SO payment or, as several already do (thank you too!), by paying for

future years up front – or remember before I have to chase you to let you know that your membership has expired! Also on the topic of money, as you will see from the Accounts sheet accompanying this Newsletter, the Association, while not rich, is not poor either! The committee is always on the lookout for suitable projects upon which to spend our Association’s funds. In past years we have given a considerable amount to augment the home comforts for TSW members (and non-members!) currently serving both in the UK and in operational theatres. We are always receptive to new ideas, particularly those which help Association members and if that also attracts new members – so very much the better! Please do let us know if you have any bright ideas or thoughts! On the subject of spending money for the benefit of members, once again this year, we will be subsidising the cost to members of the Reunion Dinner and the lunch after the AGM. This subsidy provides excellent value for money for members who attend – very worthwhile paying your subs for – so put the date in your diaries – Friday 3rd June and Saturday 4th June 2011 – more details further down, so read on!

THE PRESIDENT’S AWARD The very worthy winner of the 2009 President's Award, sponsored by JCB, was SAC Scott Gasser. The award, which is given to the airman or airwoman who has consistently displayed an exemplary, proactive, determined and wholly professional performance in all his - or her – duties, was presented at JCB’s World Headquarters at Rocester, Staffordshire, on 24th March 2010 jointly by the Association's President, ACM Sir Joe French, and JCB’s CEO, Mr Alan Bates. The day following the presentation, Scott deployed to Afghanistan for his 3rd tour in as many years!

Extracts from his citation are given below; A fuller version can be found on the website – it is quite humbling and well worth a read: During Gasser’s time on TSW, he has consistently met and exceeded the demands associated with his role. His honesty and integrity, coupled with his outstanding operational and technical competence, generate immediate confidence in his abilities… … It was his outstanding commitment to the Service and proven ability that ensured that SAC Gasser was the first choice to undertake the role of A/Cpl at FOB EDINBURGH during his operational tour of Afghanistan. SAC Gasser was specifically selected for this role by his Detachment Commander due to the anticipated challenges that this forward deployment would bring. Having already proven his worth at the Main Operating Base, he was deployed to the forward location as a singleton for 4 weeks due to manpower constraints. Undaunted by the fact he would be the sole fuels operator at this extremely isolated, yet strategically important refuel site, he ensured all helicopter tasking and site maintenance were carried out to the highest of standards. This often entailed working in excess of 18 hour days to meet all tasking in extreme climatic conditions. His outstanding efforts in maintaining this refuel site received laudable praise from the site Commander

3 www.tswscdoassn.co.uk

who personally contacted the TSW Detachment Commander to pass on his unreserved gratitude… … In addition to the extremely challenging work load in his primary role, SAC Gasser has displayed immense capacity in the delivery of effect in a variety of secondary duties. He has been instrumental in raising in excess of £4000 for charity this year, undertaking events in support of the Catherine House Hospice, Marie Curie and Help for Heroes. Not content to rest on his laurels, Gasser also volunteered to collect donations for the Royal Air Force Association in various local towns over consecutive weekends… … Putting this physical stamina to good use he participated in a charity endurance race

whilst on an operational tour of Afghanistan. He also completed the Dancon Charity March around camp Bastion in support of the Danish Armed Forces… … In addition to all of this, SAC Gasser has given his time freely in support of the local community, volunteering to assist in both the Doxey Marsh clean-up project and the provision of ATC Summer and Easter camps. He also finds the time to play football for TSW and is an active member of the TSW Rugby club… … Gasser is a dedicated professional whose military conduct and bearing are outstanding. In summary, SAC Gasser possesses the determination, spirit and professional dedication that will provide the cornerstone of tomorrow’s Royal Air Force.

ASSOCIATION AGM & DINNER 4th and 5th JUNE 2010

The 2010 Annual General Meeting and Reunion Dinner was held at Stafford on 4th and 5th June. The event was very well attended and included some 22 Servicing Commando and 58 TSW members and guests. Indeed, we were delighted to see so many, including 92 year old Percy Lackey of 3209 Servicing Commando who had travelled from New Zealand for the occasion! As usual, the weekend started with a ‘meet and greet’ at the Tillington Hall Hotel on the Friday evening. The AGM was held on the Saturday morning followed by a buffet lunch in the Sergeants’ Mess. The ‘free’ afternoon enabled members to join in at the Wing Families Day – always a popular event – which included an Association ‘drinks tent’ for members – and new members!

Zealand for the Reunion.

On Saturday evening, the Association Annual Dinner was held in the Sergeants' Mess and, once again, proved to be a bit hit with those attending. The dinner was held slightly earlier this year to enable the bold – and the young at heart – to continue their celebrations late into the night at the Wing’s ‘Hangar Bash’.

Again, the weekend was a huge success – blessed by good weather – and a great time was had by all. Particular thanks go to Bob McBey for helping to co-ordinate the arrangements and to the Wing Warrant Officer, Mark Farrell, who with his team – as ever – provided outstanding assistance; very many thanks Bob and Mark. The outcome of the AGM is summarised on both the website and as an enclosure to this Newsletter.

TSW News OP Herrick (Afghanistan)

TSW continues to support operations in Afghanistan, with 22 personnel providing 24 hour Rotors Turning Refuel (RTR) capabilities. While the colder weather over the winter period has seen a reduction in operations, the Wing has been as busy as ever, not only maintaining the vast fuel stocks and carrying out daily duties, but by helping to boost morale across the bases outside of Camp Bastion. SAC's Baz Sutherland and Adam McNeil volunteered to go out with the Chinook crew to deliver much needed Christmas parcels to personnel working in the more austere environments of the region. There was much publicity given to two members of the Det in particular. SAC's Christopher and Katy McCann are a married couple, both posted onto TSW last year. Originally, they were due to spend Christmas apart, (Katy in the Falkland Islands and Chris on Op Herrick), but last minute changes meant the couple were deployed to Afghanistan together. Unsurprisingly both Chris and Katy were delighted to be together over the festive period, and although on opposite shifts, they still managed to enjoy a Christmas meal with each other in the Bastion Messing Facility.

Falkland Islands A team of 3 personnel are continually deployed on a 3-monthly cycle to a small village on the West Falkland Islands. They are there to provide 24 hour refuelling facilities in support of British International aircraft and Search and Rescue aircraft. The fuel is usually receipted using "Ship to Shore" method, taken from a coastal freighter. Fox Bay has a very small but friendly populace of around 30 people, and although at times flights into the island can be few and far between, there is no shortage of things to do. During the summer months fishing and hunting are popular activities. TSW personnel often make themselves useful within the local community assisting to shear sheep, mend fences etc. Kenya

Throughout the year personnel from TSW have been based in the Nanyuki region of Kenya, operating from Liakipia Air Base. Their role is to support Battle Groups and Aircrew who are in training for future tasking in OP Herrick. During the summer, in typical TSW fashion, Wing personnel went to the rescue of a Puma helicopter that had to land in a game reserve due to tail rotor malfunction. Cpl Lewy Brown and SAC Easton deployed with their Oshkosh refueller to the area where, faced with impenetrable bush they were forced to proceed on foot through lion territory armed only with their rifles (not the most effective against enraged rhinos). Locating the aircraft and then working out a navigable route for the vehicle took some skill and was greatly appreciated by the aircrew. Once united with the aircraft, Cpl Brown then initiated a search of the area for the Puma engineering team that had failed to reach the aircraft despite leaving several hours earlier. Lost in the Bush, they were having trouble driving their Bedford 4 tonner to the location and were extremely relieved when TSW appeared from the

6 www.tswscdoassn.co.uk

undergrowth to point out the way to the aircraft. Norway

Over the winter months, TSW deploy to Bardufoss in Norway. Here they undertake the Cold Weather Survival Course (CWSC), consisting of classroom briefings, kitting, and shelter building. All of these newly learned skills are put to use when they have to work and sleep outside, in a simulated tactical environment, defending their "snow holes" and looking out for any real life medical situations such as frost nip or hypothermia.

The most dreaded task has to be Ice Breaking Drills, where personnel plunge themselves into the icy Arctic Waters. Wearing full military kit and skis, and carrying weapons and bergans, they must haul themselves out onto dry (if not cold) land for a quick roll in the snow and a tot of rum to warm up. After the course is completed they are free to take up the daily routine of fuel site maintenance and RTR's. This is in support of other JHF and CHF elements, who are training for future Operations and Exercises.

Tactical Supply Wing 40th Anniversary Celebrations Freedom of Stafford Parade

On the 18th September 2010 Airmen and Soldiers from MOD Stafford marched through the town centre, bayonets fixed and swords drawn exercising their privileges to the freedom of the borough. The parade was followed by a service at the Collegiate Church of St Mary, to honour and commemorate the brave who fought and died during the Battle of Britain.

All-ranks Dining In Night

On the evening of the 28th October 2010, TSW held its 40th Anniversary All-ranks Dining In Night, when personnel of all ranks were invited to attend the Sgts’ and WOs’ Mess. With past members of the Wing and TSW Association in attendance, everyone was called through to the Dining hall for the formal photographs to be taken.

This was followed by pre-dinner drinks in the very reasonably priced bar (maybe a little too reasonable!), then back to Dining Room for a four course meal, followed by speeches from Wing Commander Etches and WO Farrell, and of course the obligatory port! A good night was had by all, and we all look forward to the next 40 years. TSW 40th Anniversary Dinner Night On 19th November 2010, the Wing held its 40th Anniversary Dinner in the Sergeants’ Mess at Beacon Barracks attended by over 90 guests, including 6 previous OCs (including Father of the Wing and Vice President of the Association John Craven-Griffiths), our President Sir Joe French, AVM Matt Wiles the senior Logistics Branch officer, other distinguished guests, serving members of TSW and members of the Association.

TSW Wins The Sir Joe French Award

Very many congratulations to Tactical Supply Wing who have been awarded the Sir Joe French Award - awarded to the individual or unit within Joint Helicopter Command (JHC) who has done the most to enhance the reputation of the Royal Air Force in the Joint Service environment. Winner: Tactical Supply Wing (TSW) The Citation:

“TSW is a well-kept secret and lives well away from the limelight. However, if you were to go to Afghanistan, you would find men and women from this unit popping up everywhere – mostly dusty and dangerous places, and some places that only soldiers would usually be expected to tread. Without them, JHC units would just not function and the Wing is rightfully awarded for its unstinting performance, courage, sheer enthusiasm and dedication”.

TSW 40th Anniversary Commemorative CD and DVD

The promised TSW 40th Anniversary commemorative CD and DVD hit the streets “just in time” for the 2010 AGM and Reunion. The CD contains over 300 photographs presenting a marvellous pictorial history of the Wing’s operations and events during its first 40 years. The DVD includes 4 films: “Tactical Refuelling” 1977, “Hot Refuelling” 1986 (aka ‘Blazing Nozzles’ and ‘Only Fuels and Hoses’!), “Liquid Lifeline” 2000 and, finally, TSW in Afghanistan on Op HERRICK, made in 2009.

9 www.tswscdoassn.co.uk

If you haven’t got yours yet, copies of the CD and DVD are still available from the Treasurer, Tim Newstead – and also from the Wing WO, Mark Farrell. We wish to recoup our costs – any surplus will be donated to a charity of the Wing’s choosing – so please give generously; £6 for the two discs, which includes postage and packing, would be fine as a minimum donation.

TSW Bergathon 2010 The 14th annual TSW Bergathon was held at Swynnerton Training Area on Thursday 30th September. For the second year running, the Association entered a team of ex Wing personnel, this year comprising Emma Walker, Neil Buckingham, Cliff Whiteley, Pete Donkin, Bob McBey and Caroline (a friend from the Dutch Army). The event was well attended with 20 teams representing Army and RAF units. The event was won - as usual - by 22 Reg (Gurkha Sqn), with the Association team being 19th overall. The team did exceptionally well, especially when 2 members stepped in to replace others at short notice and without the normal 3 months training! Not bad for a bunch of oldies!

Award of Meritorious Service Medals

Many congratulations to TSW Wing WO, Warrant Officer Mark Farrell, and to the Wing’s Engineering Warrant Officer, Andy Ellison, both of whom have been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) in the 2011 New Year Honours List. To have two of the 20 MSMs given in the Honours List awarded to personnel on the same unit is unusual and is a tremendous boost for the Wing. This well-deserved honour clearly recognises their hard work, loyalty and professionalism over the years – very well done both! Andy is not yet an Association member – can an MSM recipient take a hint I wonder?!

Association Page For all you Facebook addicts, as was suggested at the 2010 AGM, the Association now has its own dedicated Facebook page. Many thanks to Geordie Lumsden, both for the suggestion and for his advice in setting up the page. So far over 230 friends have declared they “like” the page and some have even posted photographs and memories – why not have a look and add to the collection?! Don’t forget the Association website at www.tswscdoassn.co.uk which is kept up to date with all the latest Association news. Why not visit the site and post a message on the Guest Book?

Arrangements for the AGM and Dinner – 3rd & 4th June 2011

The 2011 RAFSC & TSW Association Reunion Dinner will be held on Friday 3rd June and the AGM at 1100 on Saturday 4th June – followed by lunch. The rest of the day will then be available to enjoy the TSW Families

Day and, for the hardy, the Hangar Bash in the evening. No doubt, you are wondering why the change of day for the dinner – from Saturday to Friday – this is chiefly to make life easier for our hosts, TSW, who have been so very helpful and accommodating in recent years, but for whom holding the Reunion Dinner on the same day as the Families Day and Hangar Bash creates an inordinate amount of extra work in juggling the various events. We very much hope that you will still be able to get to the weekend’s celebrations. As usual, it will be for members to make hotel bookings directly with their chosen hotel themselves.

The Dinner

Again this year, thanks to TSW, the dinner will take place in the Sergeants’ Mess at 7:30 pm for 8:00 pm. Transport to and from specific hotels will be arranged for those who require it. As last year, the Association will subsidise the dinner in an effort to give something back to you, our Association members. The cost of the 4 course Dinner (including wine and port) – for members and first guest only – remains at £10 per head; members wishing to bring guests will be required to pay the full price of £15 for each additional guest. Guest seats will, of course, be subject to availability of places.

The AGM

The Agenda for the AGM is enclosed. Should you wish to have specific items considered, please include them in the Comments block of the booking proforma. The AGM itself will start at 11:00 am in the Sgts’ Mess, with coffee being served from 10:30. As last year, the AGM will be followed by a buffet lunch hosted by Association funds.

Afternoon Events

All are very welcome to join in the TSW Families Day activities during the afternoon. As in previous years, there will be a number of displays and activities to interest and amuse. Members are again invited to make their way to the Association hospitality area (white mini marquee and signs will make it stand out!) at the rear of HQ TSW where, on production of a current Membership Card, complimentary drinks (beer, wine, and soft drinks) will be available. Booking!

Booking forms have been distributed by e-mail or snail mail; if you have not received a copy, please contact the Treasurer, Tim Newstead. Bob McBey has kindly agreed to

help with the administration again this year, for which we are very grateful. Accordingly, please return your completed Booking Proforma and cheque to him by 30th April 2011 at the latest; Bob’s address is shown on the form. To assist in the planning, please ensure that you indicate which hotel you will be using and what your transport needs will be. We very much look forward to seeing you in June! Kind regards

Tim Newstead

Main Points arising from RAFSC&TSW Association AGM held at the Sergeants Mess Stafford on 5th June 2010

The main points arising from the AGM were as follows:

The Chairman welcomed members, especially those who had travelled from a distance from Aberdeen, Dundee, West Wales, Ireland and New Zealand.

The meeting paused for a moment of quiet reflection for those members who had passed away, for those unable to attend the reunion through illness or frailty and for the Wing personnel who were on active duty, particularly in Afghanistan..

The Chairman launched the publication of the TSW 40th Anniversary commemorative CD and DVD.

There were no matters arising from the 2009 AGM. o Thanks were extended to Peter Berry for all his work on the history archive. o Editing work on Jim Coleman’s history of TSW was continuing.

Martin Williams was re-elected as Membership Secretary for the next 2 years and volunteers were sought to take over from Des Peters as Welfare and Publicity member in the following few months.

SAC Scott Gasser was the winner of the 2009 President's Award and a message of congratulations was sent to him from the AGM as the worthy winner of the award. He had deployed again to Afghanistan the day following the presentation of his award.

OC TSW, Wing Commander Tim Etches and our new Liaison Officer, Squadron Leader Tom Stevenson, were introduced. The support given to the Association by the Wing continued to be outstanding, for which the Association is very grateful. Wing Commander Etches highlighted the activities and achievements of the Wing during the year; he particularly praised the high calibre of the men and women under his command. In addition, he sought pictures and memorabilia, particularly from the Servicing Commandos, to enhance the collection in the Mountbatten Room of the Officers’ Mess at Stafford.

The Treasurer introduced the Accounts for the year ending 31st December 2009, which had been duly validated, and his report for the year was duly accepted by those present. The funds continued to be in a healthy state.

Current paid up membership stood at approximately 215 members. Servicing Commando numbers had declined by 10% during the year while there had been a corresponding increase in TSW members. Nineteen new TSW members had joined the Association since June 2009, including at least two ex-non-cadre members and one who had served with TSF at RAF Gutersloh.

o It was suggested that the Association should have a page on Facebook – and it was agreed that this would be taken forward – now done!

o It was also agreed that a list of members – but without contact details – would be published with the next edition of the Newsletter.

The meeting considered that the arrangements for 2011 should follow the successful proven format of this and previous years, provided that the Wing continued to be able to accommodate us. Suggestions for alternative venues/formats were always welcome from members for consideration.
