A Message From The Endowment Committee Chair Dear Heritage Club Friends: Youth Development. Healthy Living. Social Responsibility. This is more than a tag line at the Y. It's the essence of who we are. As Chair for the YMCA of Snohomish County Endowment Committee, I am grateful for the friendships I have made and the experiences I have had through the Y. I am also gratified by the opportunities our Y has made possible for kids and families throughout our community. As a Heritage Club member, your role is an important one, ensuring that the YMCA is robust today, and will be around in the future for our children and grandchildren. The Endowment Committee provides strategic oversight to make certain this happens, and coordinates the ongoing planned giving efforts for the YMCA of Snohomish County. Part of what we do on the Endowment Committee is ensure you, our Heritage Club members, are fully aware of the progress of our planned giving projects and the status of our Endowment Fund. A few of the accomplishments the Endowment Committee has enjoyed this past year include: •New website - We have introduced a new Planned Giving section on the YMCA website. This new tool allows visitors to conduct research on planned giving by age; analyze projected results for different financial vehicles; download tax forms for various charitable contributions; and provides helpful tips like sample bequest language. To find out more about Planned Giving, click on the Contact Us link and the Y can put you in touch with financial and investment planning advisors in our community.•Financial Investment Seminars - We have completed two seminars, one in Mill Creek and another in Marysville. A seminar is in the works for Mukilteo, which we hope to host later this fall or early winter. These seminars are excellent opportunities to hear from experts in the field of financial planning.•Endowment Distribution - Through careful management and the generosity of your gifts, the Y has almost doubled the Endowment Fund in the last ten years. The General Endowment Fund currently stands at $1,871,131. In alignment with our mission to help current and future generations, this summer the YMCA Board of Trustees approved a 4% distribution (based on a rolling 3-year average) to be allocated to Y branches in the YMCA of Snohomish County Association. That 4% amount equates to about $74,000. This annual allocation allows us to strengthen and expand Y programs to nurture the potential of children and teens in our community. Membership dues keep the doors open. Planned gifts like yours open doors and create opportunities for the current and future generations of kids and families in Snohomish County.

Roy Yates has fond childhood memories of the YMCA. When he was in fourth grade he would pack a lunch and take the Number 7 Sunset Hill bus from Ballard to the Downtown Seattle YMCA. While there he would swim, watch movies, and participate in a host of other activities.

As a junior and senior in high school Roy was involved in the High Y program at Ballard High School. While there he met a guy by the name of Connie Jacobson, the High Y volunteer coordinator. “I was president and Connie was the program coordinator. Our paths crossed again at the University of Washington through our fraternity.”

Roy’s Everett Y involvement began as a member in 1968 using the workout facilities and playing basketball. In those days he worked for Seattle First National Bank. “As a result of joining the Y I met lifelong friends like Ray Sievers and Bill Rucker,” said Roy. “The Y had a basketball team for many years. A group of us played on that team. Everett Conley, physical director at the Everett YMCA, organized the team and as a result we became good friends.”

The Y has programs for all phases of life. For Roy, as a young boy he learned to swim and enjoyed hanging out with friends. As a teenager he became involved in clubs that provided leadership opportunities. And as an adult he worked out, played basketball, and developed life-long friends. All of this ultimately led to his relationship as a volunteer and donor.

Roy and Barb have been giving to the Y since the 1960s. They do so because they feel the value of the Y to the community is important. “I also believe that anything you are involved in you should support financially,” shared Roy.

Roy joined the board in 1969 and over the years has served as president of the board on two different occasions. “When I became a board member and officer I saw the comprehensive value of the Y to our community. I originally joined the Y to meet personal objectives, but stayed involved because I saw the Y from a family and community perspective.”

Individuals such as Bob Smith, Dan Duryee, Harry Stuchell, Steve Saunders, and Senator Henry (Scoop) Jackson had tremendous influence on Roy as a volunteer. “The YMCA was the foundation of our community and always had been. I believed we could have a greater impact in the future. I wanted to be a part of that and advance the Y’s impact.”

Roy and Barb decided to make a planned gift in conjunction with formation of the Heritage Club. “I believed, along with our board, that we should leverage the Y’s past and current success to ensure the future impact and relevance of the Y in our

community,” said Roy. “It is important to me, that long after we are gone, that the Y continues to have a lasting impact on our community.”

Roy Yates has been a volunteer for the YMCA of Snohomish County since 1969. He and his wife Barbara have been donors during his entire tenure as a volunteer. Roy is an Emeritus member of the Board of Trustees and actively serves on two YMCA committees. Roy and Barbara joined the Heritage Club upon its inception in 1993.

IRA AND RETIREMENT PLAN BENEFICIARIESMost retirement plans, including 401(k)s and IRAs, are income tax–deferred, meaning that income tax is not paid until the funds are distributed to you in life, or upon your death. This taxation makes retirement assets among the most costly assets to distribute to loved ones.

Because they are subject to income taxes to your beneficiaries, retirement assets make ideal gifts to tax-exempt charitable organizations such as the YMCA of Snohomish County. Otherwise, the income taxes on retirement assets you leave to your loved ones can be as high as 3%. This means that an IRA worth $100,000 will be worth only $65,000 by the time it reaches them.

On the other hand, the naming of a charity as the beneficiary of retirement assets upon death generates no income taxes. The charity is tax-exempt and eligible to receive the full amount and bypass any income taxes. This means that in the above example, YMCA of Snohomish County would receive the full $100,000 benefit.

MANAGING THEYMCA ENDOWMENT FUNDThe Investment Committee is commissioned by the YMCA of Snohomish County Board of Trustees to provide oversight to the long-term growth of the endowment, balancing risk, return, and spending. The Committee meets quarterly to review the performance of the endowment portfolio, measuring against a balanced portfolio of 50% S&P and 50% Barclay’s Intermediate Government Credit Index per the investment guidelines. The endowment is invested primarily in mutual funds and adheres to the guideline requiring that neither fixed income nor the equities component of the portfolio shall be less than 30%, ensuring investment diversification.

Per YMCA Spending Policy, the Board of Trustees has approved up to 4% of the rolling average fair market value of the Endowment Fund on June 30 of the three most recent years to be distributed from the Endowment Fund in 2012 to support Y programming. In the event of exceptional growth in the Endowment Fund, the Finance Committee, and Endowment Committee may consider additional distributions, subject to approval of the Board of Trustees.
