New dual Bachelor’s degree at UM and HTWG Konstanz

University of Malaya (UM), the oldest university in Malaysia, and University of Applied Sciences

Konstanz, Germany, agreed to jointly start a dual Bachelor’s degree programme comprising the Bachelor in “Languages and Linguistics (German Language)” at UM and the course in “Business German and Tourism Management” in Konstanz. The joint programme provides expertise in

German language, culture and practise-oriented knowledge in tourism management. It prepares

students for work in the tourism sector, especially involving Malaysia and Germany.

The first students from the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics of UM will go to Konstanz in October

2013. The students study the first three years at UM and two years in Konstanz. They will graduate

from both universities and be

awarded a dual degree.

Signing of the MoU between UM and HTWG Konstanz in August 2012: Prof. Dr. Mohana K. Nambiar and Dr. Thilagavathi Shanmuganathan (UM) with Dr. Kai Handel, President of HTWG, Prof. Dr. Helmut Weber and Prof. Dr. Gabriele Thelen (HTWG)

UMP ties up close cooperation with German companies

Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with

Elektrisola (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Infineon Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd on 5th September 2012 to foster a strategic collaboration in the fields of academic and

research with the two prestigious German companies based in Malaysia.

Since 2010, UMP offers a dual Bachelor’s degree programme in Mechatronic Engineering

together with the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Karlsruhe, Germany. In 2012, the two universities started a second dual Bachelor’s degree course in Automotive Engineering. Through the MoU, students who are enrolled in these programmes will be enabled to undergo

six to eight months of industrial training at Elektrisola either in Malaysia or Germany.

Studying in the technological heart of Europe Since more than 15 years young Malaysians study in Baden-Württemberg

The federal German state of Baden-Württemberg lies in southwest Germany, at the center of

Europe, sharing borders with France and Switzerland. The region has always been famous for science and technology. Being home to a number of well-known companies like Daimler AG, Porsche, Robert Bosch GmbH (automobile industry), Carl Zeiss AG (optics) and SAP AG (soft-

ware), Baden-Württemberg certainly belongs to the technological heart of Europe. For anybody

interested in technical education, Baden-Württemberg is definitely the place to be.

Since 1997, Malaysia and Baden-Württemberg closely cooperate in the field of technical education. Today, ca.

50 young Malaysians go to Baden-Württemberg each year in order to study engineering subjects (Bachelor’s

and Master’s courses) at a University of Applied Sciences (UAS). Most of the Malaysian students receive grants

from the Malaysian government, i.e. from JPA, MARA and FELDA. The number of Malaysian state scholarship

holders currently attending UAS in the

southwest German state exceeds 300.

German Universities of Applied Sciences offer practice-oriented studies and applied research. Teaching and research at these institutions is primarily directed towards practical requirements. Typically, UAS closely cooperate with local industries. Studying at a UAS usually involves intern-

ships and research projects are often conducted in intense collaboration with industry compa-

nies, thus ensuring the applicability of the education and the acquired knowledge.

Before taking up their studies in Baden-Württemberg, the Malaysian students have to complete their A-Levels (10 points

at least) and successfully pass a German language proficiency test for university studies (DSH 2). This preparatory phase is

usually conducted at INTEC (UiTM), in an A-Level German-programme. Additionally, the students undergo a practical training in

Malaysia before going to Baden-Württem-berg for Bachelor studies. In Germany, the students are constantly monitored and

receive more supporting courses. The intense preparation pays off. About 95% of the Malaysian students successfully complete

their studies in Baden-Württemberg, some of them win awards for outstanding achievements. Later many alumni work for German companies in Malaysia. It is now planned to include

Master’s studies in this successful and well-established programme.

Research in Germany UiTM collaborates with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft by Dr. Cheng Yee Low, UiTM, and Dr. Roman Dumitrescu, Fraunhofer IPT

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has successfully

co-organised the first German-Malaysian Workshop “Advances in Mechatronics and Engineering Technology” as an integral part of the 1st Joint Symposium on System-integrated Intelligence (SysInt2012) in June 2012 in Hannover, Germany. The symposium was organised by three

outstanding research programmes funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The

UiTM-delegation presented 13 papers.

The German-Malaysian workshop was the result of a fruitful collaboration of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of UiTM and the Project Group Mecha-

tronic Systems Design of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (Fraunhofer IPT). As a highlight, a Memorandum of Understanding has

been signed between the two parties during the workshop to officiate a starting point for more joint

efforts in the near future.

The Fraunhofer IPT, UiTM‘s new research partner, is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG), Europe’s largest

research organisation with more than 18,000 employees and 80 research units in Germany. The key objective of FhG is to transform scientific expertise into applications of practical

utility. It develops products and processes right up to

commercial maturity (see www.fraunhofer.de).

High demand for MINT graduates in Germany

The latest 2012 Federal Research Report reveals that the research and innovation industry in Germany is expanding, yet it is still experiencing a shortage of skilled and specialist labour in mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology (MINT).

Because of the substantial efforts made by politicians, industry, and higher education and research, Germany’s innovative potential has been increasing steadily in the past years. In the latest European Innovation Scoreboard, Germany is listed as Europe‘s leader in the innovation sector.

While the outlook of the research and inno-vation industry is positive, there is still a lack of skilled labour in MINT areas.

This could be a chance for international students who graduated from a German university. Graduates from a German uni-versity have easy access to the German employment market. They are now allowed to work for up to 18 months while they seek a graduate-level job. Graduates who have such a graduate-level job can stay and gain some valuable practical work experience.

Do your A-Levels with German in Kuala Lumpur!

Are you interested in Bachelor’s studies in Germany? You have the opportunity to learn German and receive tailor-made preparation for your studies in Germany without loosing time - while you do your A-Levels. The German-Malaysian-Institute (GMI) in Kajang (www.gmi.edu.my) and the International Education College (INTEC) at UiTM in Shah Alam (http://intec.uitm.edu.my/) both already have successfully prepared many young Malaysians for studies in Germany.

The German A-Level Preparatory Program (GAPP) at GMI was established in 2001. It primarily focuses on technical and science subjects. GAPP offers Cambridge A-Levels with Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and AS German and pre-study practical experience. GAPP also assists students with regards to the placement at a German university and pro-vides further preparatory workshops. For more information, see www.gmi.edu.my/ourbusiness-gapp.php and next page.

The A-Level German Programme (ALG) at INTEC was specially developed by UiTM and the State of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in 1997 (see also page 4). In cooperation with the University of Heidelberg, the ALG is preparing for technical and science subjects. The A-Levels are registered with Edexel under the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) in London. German is offered as AS. Like GMI, INTEC offers practical experience which is required by many German Universities of Applied Sciences and support with regards to placement at a German university. For more information please contact Ms. Rita R. Sohari, the Head of the A-Level Programme, at [email protected] or visit the INTEC website (see above).
