Fishing Day—Tillamook Anglers Association

Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc. Page 3

Ever see the bumper sticker that says I’d rather be fishing? I think we’ve all dreamed of getting away and hooking the big one. Thanks to the Tillamook Anglers Association (TAA), Whiskey Creek Fish Hatchery, and scores of volunteers and donors, this dream comes true every year for hundreds of people with disabilities.

For 21 years, the second Saturday of September has been fishing day at Whiskey Creek. But Jerry Dove, president of TAA, and his team do far more than stock the hatchery with 1200 rainbow trout. From the moment our clients arrived, greeted with complimentary doughnuts and hot drinks, until the last fish was cleaned, iced, and bagged, it was a fun-filled day.

Each fisherman was matched with a volunteer, who assisted in baiting and fish removal until the limit of four was reached. Next it was off to the cleaning station where the fish were cleaned and packed in ice. Our own Pam White caught the final fish of the day. Soon it was lunch time and a wonderful barbecue was provided featuring chicken, hamburgers, and hotdogs.

Local fundraising subsidizes this complementary event. Plus, we didn’t forget to get our free Tillamook Ice Cream cone before we left! On September 8th, 16 of our Mid-Valley clients made the trip to Tillamook and came back with more than 60 fish. With all the smiles and fun, Ed Wanner said, “this is one day I’d rather be watching.”

Bike Rodeo In September, Mid Valley Rehabilitation hosted our annual Bike Rodeo, and, 16 lucky people participated. The event was held at the McMinnville Police Department where Officer Aaron Smith reminded the crowd of the Do's and Don’ts of the road. Following Officer Smith's great advice, we practiced our skills on an obstacle course set up especially for us. Tommy's Bike Shop provided quick checkups on each of our bikes to

help us keep them at peak performance. Everyone enjoyed pizzas from 3rd Street Pizza served by Mid- Valley's very own staff. After everyone was well fed, we set out on the road to put our bike skills to the test. Our route wound throughout McMinnville. The

group finally arrived at Serendipity for a cool treat. You won't want to miss the Bike Rodeo next time.

Sandra McQuillan—100 Stories!

Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc Page 6

In July, the readers and support staff were invited to Mrs. Hardy’s home. The ladies had tea parties and read the book Milk with My Tea by Allen Say. Following that the ladies tried on kimonos. On another day, the gentlemen came for cookies and Bocci Ball. We think we will make it a tradition.

Lori Strahm is a reading coach in the Mid-Valley Reading Program. and she wrote about her reader Sandra McQuillan. “Sandra is an amazing woman! In the last three years she has read accounts of people who have shaped our country such as George Washington, Lewis and Clark, pilgrims, pioneers, and cowboys. She particularly enjoys articles from the Reader’s Digest. She has learned about Diane Nyad swimming between Cuba and the

Florida Keys, dogs helping returning vets recover from their injuries through the Wounded Warrior Program, and many more. Congratulations Sandra! You are an inspiration to so many, especially me. Looking forward to another 100 stories.” Submitted by: Lori Strahm Reading Coach for Mid-Valley Reading Program

Reading Program—Milk with my Tea

Some clients have been reading and learning about plants. JR Loredo and Ross Luis built a raised bed for gardening at Davis Street. Pete Schoonveld helped get soil from NW Greenlands. The guys planted a variety of seeds and plants. The photo below is an example of the results from the garden.

Patty Opheim—Rite Aid Emloyee of the Quarter

Rite Aid’s Employee of the Quarter is….

Patty Opheim! Patty was hired at the McMinnville Rite Aid in April 2012. On September 1st, she was awarded Employee of the Quarter by the store manager, Wendy Hackman. Patty was completely surprised and said “Oh wow” when Wendy presented her with the certificate, a $10.00 gift card, and a pin. Patty has wanted to work in

retail, and with her Employment Specialist Cherri Davis, she focused on that goal. Wendy said “Hiring Patty was one of the best decisions I’ve made; she is awesome!” Patty takes care of the store’s janitorial needs, stocks, and faces shelves. She also works a second job as a janitor at DMV. Congratulations Patty! You had a goal, stuck to it, and now you are Rite Aid’s Employee of the Quarter!

New Landscaper in Dallas Dallas has a new landscaper and he is doing a great job. Steven Spenner lives in Salem and works in Dallas performing the landscaping at Dallas CIS, Cherry Heights, and Chemeketa Community College. Bonnie Delsman, Manager of Cherry Heights, says that “Cherry Heights has never looked better.” The properties look great because Steven enjoys his work and works hard to keep ahead of the weeds.

Steven enjoys riding his quad, camping, hunting, and basketball. Steven also enjoys helping others in need. He is probably a good person to know if you need moving help! Steven is a welcome addition to the Mid-Valley family. Thanks for your hard work and great personality!

New Cashier at Salem Walmart Congratulations to Andrew Russell for your new job at Walmart in Salem. Andrew started his new career as a cashier for the Commercial Street Walmart. He did amazing at his interviews, and as part of the interview process, handled a practice cashiering session with ease. Andrew has a

heart for customer service, and he will do great helping customers at Walmart. If you are in south Salem, stop in to pick up a 70” flat screen TV and Andrew will gladly help you during check-out. Way to go Andrew!

Welcome New Client Employee Allison Dean is the newest member of the Industrial Services team! She enjoys learning the new jobs available to her at IS and does so with a smile. She works 2 days a week and wears a smile everyday

Serendipity Summer

Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc Page 8

Summer at Serendipity was FANTASTIC!!! Beautiful weather, lots of awesome events, and a fabulous crew made for the most successful Summer in the history of Serendipity Ice Cream. It really all started in May with Alien Daze and just kept getting better from there on out. At the end of June, we challenged our friends to help us reach 1,000 fans on Facebook and we would reward them with free ice cream. They rose to the challenge in record time leading to our “FREEdom Never Tasted So Sweet” event on July 4th where we gave away “FREEdom” cones all day. Next came Turkey Rama, and with the carnival moved back to downtown for the first time in years, we saw record crowds and enjoyed a fabulous event. Also in July, we rolled out our “Kid Creators” program, asking our children friends to create their own treat and submit it to our contest. The prize at stake was, not only having their creation featured as a

special for a week, but also a party with 8 of their friends where everyone got to enjoy their creation for FREE! We chose 5 children: Trevor, Emma, Scout, Maggie and Brandon, and their super creative

treats were huge hits! Next time you are in, look for our scrapbook of “Creators and their Creations.” Just as it seemed, that summer should be wrapping up, the third annual Drag the Gut Festival was held on the last Saturday in August and it was FANTASTIC! The streets were full of cars originating from eras old and new, and the sidewalks were full of crowds out to enjoy them for hours on end. The Drag

the Gut Festival has continued to grow every year, and this year’s event ended up being Serendipity’s second biggest sales day of the summer (second only to Alien Daze)! All of these great events were in addition to our monthly 2nd Tuesday Fundraisers, which have been a lot of fun for us and our partner not-for-profits. Thank you to everyone who came by to see us! We hope to see you soon for hot soup!

Industrial Services is proud to announce our newest addition to the IS supervisory team - Patrick Murders! He is a native Oregonian, but recently returned from a few years in California where he drove trucks. He has learned the different aspects of his new job as a floor supervisor. When he is not working hard forming Seedballz, doing the

shred pick-ups, or “other duties as assigned,” he loves fishing and golfing. Pat, you are a great addition and we are very glad you came back to Oregon, but even more pleased to have you on our IS team.

Victor Highley—45 Years This year we were lucky to celebrate a momentous occasion…Victor Highley’s 45 years of employment with Mid-Valley! He was one of the first clients to join Mid-Valley back in 1967 and has been working ever since. We were joined at the party by his guests

including his wife Patty, current and previous managers, and a lot of friends! He was even surprised by Ezra Kilmer. Mr. Kilmer was the second executive director of Mid-Valley and the production manager before that. Victor worked in the Wood Shop at that time. Over the years Victor has been able to work at different locations throughout Mid-Valley such as Janitorial, the Lunch Program at Wood Products, and now at Industrial Services. It was great to see everyone gathered to celebrate such a significant event! Congratulations Victor for all of your hard work.

In September, Michael Wagner achived 31 years of employment with Mid-Valley. We were able to celebrate his 31 years because his 30-year anniversary was lost in the shuffle during his vocational transition from his working years on the Janitorial Crew to working at Industrial Services! Michael works 4 days a week and LOVES to help take

out the trash and work on Seedballz. He is always willing to give a hug to people and can bring a smile to anyone’s face. He enjoys interacting with his friends and is a great person to have on the IS team. Congratulations Michael and thanks for all of your efforts over these last 31 years!

She was sur-rounded by managers (both past and present), friends, and co-workers. She was very proud of her accomplishments and told some sto-ries of her past work experiences, from working on the Janitorial Crew in 1987, Freelin-Wade a few years later, and now at Industrial Services

where she loves to sort and prep documents to be shredded. Sandra resides at Valley’s Edge and partici-pates in the Mid-Valley Reading Pro-gram (see article in this edition). Great successes, congratulations Sandra!

Sandra McQuillan—30 Years

De-spite being blind, Tricia is able to do the majority of the jobs here with 100% quality. She is even able to determine if the microscopic 0-ring is not the correct one for the job or

if a piece is faulty. Her favorite job, hands down, is placing felt in the cigar lids and being able to complete over 1,500 pieces in a single day! She is a great member of our team and we are very lucky to have her.

Tricia Ballenger—15 Years

Employee of the Month

Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc Page 12

When openings came up for Mid-Valley vacated positions that needed to be filled, Miguel Elkins did not hesitate to say “I’ll do it.” Miguel has shown enthusiasm in getting the job done! Miguel’s duties include litter patrol, downtown watering and balances this with his employment on the Janitorial Crew as well. Work

isn’t just a word to Miguel, it is an obligation and he takes it seriously! Congratulations Miguel! Thanks for all your hard work!

September 2012—Miguel Elkins

Andrea Granroth has been in our Amity CIS program for several years. She is a wonderful asset to our program and staff enjoy her bright, cheerful attitude and her will-ingness to help whenever an oppor-tunity arises. With a great smile, Andrea also enjoys making cards for birthdays and other special occa-

sions. She also enjoys baking, par-ticipating in arts and crafts, and dancing to music. Way to go, An-drea!

September Citizen of the Month—Andrea Granroth

Anne Wall’s work habits have been notably impressive over the past 6+ months. She has shown up for all scheduled shifts unless she is sick, in which case she has been excellent about following proper call-in procedures; she will call in as soon as she knows that she may need to miss work. If no one answers the phone, she will leave a voicemail and continue to call back occasionally through out the morning until she is able to speak to staff directly. On one occasion this summer, a staff member overslept and was 20 minutes late, but Anne sat at a table outside and waited patiently for them to arrive. I was VERY impressed by this because there was a time when Anne would leave and go back home if staff was not here when she arrived, even if it wasn’t quite yet time for her shift to start. She has been enjoying

learning more food prep tasks and has started to take the initiative to follow the prep list on the board when looking for tasks without staff needing to direct her. If she is unsure about what to do next, she is great about asking staff for direction instead of waiting for staff to notice she needed a new task. She has also started to take responsibility as a team member. At one point she came to me and mentioned that a co-worker had missed a spot while sweeping. I asked if she had let them know so that they could fix it. She said, “No, but I should do that” and then approched her co-worker and kindly showed them the spot they had missed. We are all very pleased with Anne’s growth in both skills and the level of responsibility. Thank you Anne! Keep up the great work!

October 2012—Ruth Walton

Diane Chladek was nominated and elected Citizen of the Month for October 2012 by the Mid-Valley Management Team. Diane was on an outing with staff in the van when they got hit by a driver who drove through a red light. Diane was extremely brave after the accident. She kept staff from losing consciousness by yelling at her to stay awake and then told people who to call. Diane was hurt herself, but didn’t want to leave the staff and

stayed with her the whole time. She was more concerned about staff than about herself. Diane is our hero.

The Margaret Reavis Larsen Scholarship Fund for vocational scholarships. The Ron Edwards Memorial Scholarship Fund (funded by the Mid-Valley Open Golf Tournament proceeds) funds scholarships in resi-dential, and vocational services. The Mid-Valley Charitable Fund Scholarships, which offset private pay in vocational and residential services.

Those of you who receive this news-letter online and wish to contribute, please mail to: Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc. 16700 S Hwy 99W Amity OR 97101. Thank you for your help as we serve over 200 adults with disabilities.

Ruth Walton has made an important contribution to the Cherry Heights program in the 16 months she’s been an employee. One of the residents can have challenging behaviors, as she has a sophisticated and complex mind that requires patience, close monitoring, and a lot of positive reinforcement. Ruth has created and maintained an excellent working relationship with our challenging resident. She has helped the resident achieve new skills that some had thought to be impossible. One of the biggest tasks Ruth has completed is getting the

resident to ride an elevator. It took weeks of patience but the resident became more confident and is now able to use an elevator. This opens up a very useful skill. Ruth also challenges her to learn other new skills – gardening, using an iPad, learning new Structured Teeach activities, and interacting in new games. Ruth has her giggling and smiling, and initiating physical touch. A picture is worth a thousand words – Cherry Heights has a picture of the resident hugging Ruth that brings

tears to the eyes of the observer. Thanks for all you do, Ruth.
