FranN.Iamschizophrenic.Mylasthospitalstaywasin1980,inthestatehospitalforsixmonthsbecausemyhusbandwouldnolongerbringmehome;hewantedadivorceafter13yearsandtwosmallchildren.Withnohometogoto,Iwaitedatthestatehospitalforabedatanadultfostercarehome.

Aftersixmonths,Iwasplacedinaverynicehome.MichiganVocationalRehabilitationsentmetoabusinessschoolwhileIwasthere.Aftertwosemestersatthebusinessschool,itwastimetofindajob.ByJuly1981,Ihadajobasabookkeeperforasmallcompanyandworkedforoneyearwhilestilllivingatthefostercarehome.Itwastimetotrylivingonmyown.Iwasafraidofeverything.Livingalone,havingrelapses,andjusttakingcareofmyself.Imovedintoarentedhomeandcontinuedtoworkandsupportmyself.

WhileIwasatthefostercarehome,Ireadapamphletthatdescribedmysymptomsperfectly.BeforeIreadit,IdidnotknowIhad


schizophrenia.Thepamphletsaidthatschizophreniawasincurablebutcouldbecontrolledwithmedication.Allofmyrelapseswerefromgoingoffmymedication.Fromthattimeon,Ihavedecidedtobewell.InevergooffmymedicationoreverhaveitadjustedandIhavebeenstablesince1980.IknowIstillhavethediseasebutamcontrollingitwithmedication.

In1983,Iboughtmyownhomeandhavemychildreneveryotherweekend(myhusbandhascustodyofthechildren,butIamstillpartoftheirlives).Ialsostartedtoattendcollegeatnight.IhavebeentakingoneclassasemesterforthesepastsixyearsandwillreceiveaCertificateinAccountingthisDecember.

BecauseItookaccountingcoursesatthecommunitycollege,IwaspromotedtoAccountingSupervisorin1985.Ihaveaverygoodjobandenjoyitverymuch.IntheeightyearsIhavebeenworking,Ihavenothadtotaketimeoffformyschizophrenia.Ithasnotbeeneasy.Ifeelverytiredinthemorningsandforcemyselftogotowork.Mylifeislowkeyed,asIcannottakemuchstress.

MysocialworkerheardaboutSchizophreniaAllianceandsuggestedIgetinvolvedinit.SinceIhavemetJoanneV.andthemembersofhergroup,mylifehasbeentransformed.IamaSAleaderandnowhaveagroupofverycaringandfriendlypeopletomeetwithonceaweek.Asaleader,mylifehasbeenenhancedbythepossibilityofhelpingothersandmyselftowardrecovery.Thankyou,SA
