Dr. Guido Schnieders

Director of DAAD Informa-tion Center Kuala Lumpur

Dear Friends and Partners of DAAD Kuala

Lumpur, dear Readers,

It is a great pleasure for me to introduce my-self as the new representative of the DAAD in Kuala Lumpur, succeeding Dr. Harald Olk,

whom many of you might know. After study-ing Linguistics, German Literature and Philo-sophy in Berlin (Germany), Vienna (Austria)

and London (U.K.), I worked as lecturer and DAAD representative at universities in Germany, Hungary and Indonesia. Thus,

Southeast Asia is familiar to me and I’m very

happy to be able to live and work in Malaysia.

Academic cooperation and exchange bet-ween Malaysia and Germany has developed quite well in the last years. The number of

Malaysian students in degree courses in German universities rose from 197 in 2001 to 932 in 2011 and thus almost quintupled in the

last 10 years. Today, Malaysian and German universities work together quite closely and

even run joint degree courses.

Germany is especially popular in Malaysia as the land of engineers - most cooperation and

exchange concentrate on the different fields

of engineering.

We very much hope that the DAAD Infor-mation Centre Kuala Lumpur can contribute to enhancing and intensifying academic co-

operation between our two countries.

The newsletter of the DAAD IC Kuala Lumpur will keep you updated on recent develop-ments in German Higher Education and German-Malaysian academic cooperation

and provide information about study and research opportunities in Germany and scholarship offers. The newsletter has a new

format and a new design.

We hope you like and enjoy reading it!

German Alumni Networking Forum 2011

In December, the German Alumni Networking

Forum was held for the third time (after the meetings in Penang 2009 and in Kuala Lum-pur 2010). Organised jointly by the German

Embassy, Goethe-Institute and DAAD, the forum brings together German alumni, i.e. Malaysians who graduated from German

higher education institutions, and represen-tatives from German companies and German

universities.

About 180 guests, among them more than 115 alumni from all over Malaysia, used this excellent opportunity for networking and

gathered in the residence of the German Ambassador in Kuala Lumpur, Dr. Günter Gruber, to enjoy presentations and German

refreshments, exchange memories and meet

potential business and cooperation partners.

The main topic of the presentations were Malaysian-German university cooperations. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dieter Schramm, Dean of the

Engineering Faculty of the University Duis-burg-Essen, explained the German model of

close cooperation between university and

business companies.

Dato' Prof. Ir. Dr. Dr.-Ing. E. h. Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Tek-nologi Mara and since November 2011 Hono-

rary Doctor of the University of Stuttgart, who contributed intensively to the development of Malaysian-German academic relations, repor-

ted about his manifold Malaysian-German

experience.

The next German Alumni Networking Forum is scheduled for the last quarter in 2012. We are looking forward to meet many alumni

there!

Earn a German engineering degree in Kuala Lumpur!

Since 2010, the University of Applied Sciences Rosenheim (Germany) and the Universiti Kuala

Lumpur offer a joint Master of Engineering Technology in Green and Energy Efficient Building (MGEEB). The course responds to the growing awareness in Malaysia of the need to conserve energy resources and combines it with German experience with energy-efficient construction.

The MGEEB focuses on efficient building materials, energy efficiency, sustainable construction methods and local compatibility. Teaching is carried out by lecturers from Rosenheim and the Universiti Kuala Lumpur. The programme is supported by DAAD with funds from the German

Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

During the first three semesters in Kuala Lumpur the

students acquire scientific and technical knowledge whilst also receiving training as managers or entrepreneurs. During the fourth and final semester, the Malaysian students spend

at least a month in Rosenheim, attend courses at the university there, write their Master’s thesis and make contact with German firms. Graduates are awarded a joint Master’s

degree by both universities.

FAQ: Which university is the

best one for me?

Visitors to our office frequently want to know which German university they should attend

or which German university is the best one. However, there is no straightforward answer to this question as your best choice will de-

pend primarily on factors determined by you.

Would you prefer to study at a large institution

offering a great variety of courses and op-tions? Or would you maybe rather take a course at a small university providing a very

“homely” environment? Do you have research interests in a particular field? Or are you look-ing primarily for a taught course involving little

research? Is IT infrastructure or specific lab equipment of particular importance to you? How important is a comparatively low rent to

you?

The best way of including all these issues

and more in your search for an institution is to use the online university ranking available from the DAAD website. There

you can customise your search for an institution that will suit your needs and

interests best.

Learn German

Where can I learn German?

This is one of the questions frequently asked by our visi-tors. Here in Kuala Lumpur, German language classes are of course offered in the Goethe-Institut KL. But what about those who are staying outside of KL? Fret not, for Penangites, the Malaysian-German Society in Penang also offers German language courses. Check out their website at

Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists These research grants provide young scientists with an opportunity to carry out a research pro-ject or a doctoral programme at a German higher education institution or research institute. operation and Development, which aims at giving young university graduates and professionals the opportunity to attend specifically selected Master’s and Doctoral degree courses. A new list of courses for which applicants can receive funding is released every year in April together with

the call for applications. Applicants should have two years of professional experience.

Group Visits to Germany by Foreign Students The DAAD funds study visits and study seminars in Germany by groups of foreign students under the direction of a Malaysian university teacher. This funding programme aims to deliver
