CALENDAR

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate.

1 Corinthians 13:3

How quickly the school year is hurtling towards the end! Things are getting busier rather

than slowing down here at school, and I hear many times a day how exceptionally busy

parents and family life is as the year draws to a close and the holiday season

approaches!

At this time of year patience can get a bit frayed and tempers can be a bit shorter than

normal, as we try to fit everything and everyone into each day. Schools, workplaces,

couples and families can experience a rise in irritability and unkind words as stress

levels rise.

I found a lovely quote, shown above that I recently put up on my fridge ready for this

season. For times when I am a little more tired or stressed, my aim is to “think” before I

speak. It reminds me of the Bible verse from Corinthians written above – I can speak

using impressive jargon, great oratory skills and passion, but if my words are not

backed up by love and do not lift others up then they lack any real value.

As we approach this busy stretch, may we strive to speak with love and kindness to

those around us.

May God bless your week,

Kathryn

Wonderful Compliments!

I always love it when parents give me direct feedback on aspects of the school that

they love or where they feel changes could bring improvements. Many parents take

the opportunity to do this, either through an informal chat in the yard or more formally

through a letter or email. This feedback is certainly valued and is used in reflections

and forward planning as applicable.

One of the compliments I have heard the most in recent months is how much the

children who attend our OSHC service love going there and how much easier this

makes it for parents who need and use this service. We hear of children being

booked into Vacation Care sessions just because they love to go! That to me is a real

recommendation!

Thank you to Mrs Hannola

Towards the end of Term 3 Mrs Karen Hannola let me know that she would not be

continuing on in her role as OSHC Director. I would like to thank Mrs Hannola for her

work and leadership in OSHC, for the wonderful relationships she made with the

students and the contribution she made to our school through the OSHC service. Her

warmth, genuine care and smile will be missed.

Advertising for a new Director has taken place, but in the interim Mr Wilder Bhraunxs

has stepped into the role as Acting Director. I thank him for his willingness to take on

this role.

As we have been a little short staffed in OSHC (more on that later!) I have had the

opportunity to help out in OSHC on several occasions and once again witnessed what

a wonderful OSHC staff we have, and the dedication they show in ensuring that

students are cared for physically, emotionally and socially whilst in a fun environment.

What a blessing to be able to offer such a fabulous service to the parents of our school

community.

It is always a joy as a Principal when you receive feedback from outsiders about our

students and the way they represent the school when out in public. It was fantastic to

receive a phone call from the ABC Studio in Adelaide, who rang to pass on their

compliments regarding our students and staff. The Years 3/4 and 4/5 classes had

just visited the studio as part of their Urban Camp – The ABC staff, who have many

schools go through their studio, were so impressed by our student’s beautiful manners,

friendly approach and enthusiastic participation and passed on their commendations tn

our wonderful teaching staff Ms Gabby Pisano, Mrs Sarah Lowke and Miss Joanna

Juers, their professionalism, fantastic rapport, obvious care for and positive relationships

with the students.

Congratulations to our Years 3/4 and 4/5 students and staff, along with our

wonderful parent volunteers who formed an integral part of the team, for inspiring such

wonderful praise!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Mr Wilder Bhranux and his wife Alison on the safe arrival of their

first child, a son Rodrigo Jaime. Every blessing as you take your first steps into

parenthood.

PRINCIPALS REPORT CONT.

Grandparents and Special Friends Day

That special day of the year is fast approaching! Some important

information about the day:

As the day is so close to Remembrance Day, we will be taking the

opportunity to observe this occasion with our special guests.

If families have a special guest or guests attending on the day,

they are asked to send in a small plate (preferably on a

disposable plate/container) of something sweet or savory to

provide a special morning tea for our guests. A big thank you to

members of P&F who are volunteering their time to set up, serve

and pack up morning tea on the day.

The timetable will be as follows:

9:00 to 9:40am Chapel

9:40 to 10:00 am Morning tea for Grandparents and

Special Friends

(Glee singing during morning tea)

10:00 to 10:40am Visits to classrooms and tour of

school given by students. Students

will be working on Remembrance

Day activities in their classrooms

during this time.

10:40 to 10:50am Short ceremony led by Year 6/7

students as a shared Remembrance

Day celebration for whole school

and guests.

Parking for special guests will be on the oval. To ensure the safety

of our guests, I need two parents to act as parking attendants to

guide people to the parking area and ensure we fit cars in so that

they can safely get out again. If you can help please let the front

office know.

Staffing for 2013

It is with pleasure that I let the school community know that Ms Eileen Patterson will be continuing on as a teacher in our school in

2014 whilst Mrs Teena Nicholls takes further time as Parenting Leave. We look forward to having stability for our Junior Primary

students through Eileen’s continued presence, acknowledging the wonderful way she has stepped in to Teena’s class in 2013,

never an easy task.

Classroom Fridges

We now have working fridges for school lunches in the Year 3/4 and 4/5 classrooms ready for the summer season. The two

year 6/7 classes will receive fridges in the next couple of weeks, which means all the transportable rooms, which tend to get

hotter, will have fridges to store food.

The remaining classes are due to get fridges as part of the 2014 budget, as this initiative was being rolled out over a two year

period. These classes will be asked to store lunchboxes in the classroom during Term 4.

If any school families have spare fridges in good working order they would be prepared to lend to these classes in the interim,

your offer would be gratefully received. Please speak to Travis or Kathryn if you are able to help out.

Williamstown Pantomime The Annual Williamstown Pantomime was held in Week 1, on Tuesday 15th

October, at Williamstown Town Hall. The Williamstown Amateur Players

performed 'The Dragon Who Lost Her Fire'. The Amateur Players came together to

give mothers something to do in their spare time. They also do it for fundraising

purposes.

The ladies, who are known as the Williamstown Amateur Players, have been

performing fairy tales for 33 years for the joy of music and drama. Altogether

there are 18 cast members (all of them are women).

They have been performing since 1981 for family entertainment. They do it to

raise money for cancer and they do it for the enjoyment of the community. They

originally started doing the performances to give mothers time away from their

children and it has kept going still, even though their children have grown up.

The fairytale 'The Dragon Who Lost Her Fire', was based around the story of a

princess helping a dragon to protect it's young and reverse the spell of the wicked

witch. The songs that they sang and danced to were 'Happy Wanderer', 'You

Made Me Love Me', 'Hippopotamus Song', 'I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)', 'Pick

Yourself Up', 'Incy Wincy Spider' and 'Puppet On A String'. Overall it was an

exciting performance and we can't wait to see what they come up with for next

year!

Thank you to the families who accepted the invitation, and enthusiastically boarded

the bus to attend the Moon Lantern Festival in September. Unfortunately a drastic

change in weather meant the Parade was cancelled, but a number of stalls were still

set up at Elder Park and the vendors were eager to share elements of their culture

with us. From Pork Dumplings and Spring Rolls to Henna tattoos and Buddha trinkets,

there were still plenty of smiles to been seen. As we travelled back to school we

enjoyed the light of the lanterns, which lined the inside of the bus, and we kept our

eyes open for a glimpse of the moon. When the full moon did appear from behind

the clouds it was simply beautiful.

Mrs McDonald

A message I received from the Adelaide Festival Centre-

To the staff, students and families of St Jakobi Lutheran School, Thank you all so much for all your time, effort and enthusiasm in preparing for the

Moon Lantern Festival. It was with heavy hearts and great consideration that we decided to cancel the festival at 5pm on the day due to unforeseen weather conditions. It was an unfortunate circumstance but we hope you understand that we were considering the safety of our performers, our patrons and our lanterns. We hope you consider applying for the 2014 Moon Lantern Festival. Thanks once again for all your hard work, and we hope to see you next year.
