Forward : The RSL evolved as a direct result of the camaraderie, concern and mateship shown by the“diggers” for the welfare of their mates during and after the 1914-1918 War. That ethos of compassion andservice remains today the motivating influence of the League.

The Beginning: On Saturday 26th August 1916, a public meeting was held in the Council Hall inWilliamstown to form a Branch Committee of the Australian Soldiers Repatriation Fund. Twenty twopeople attended. Thirty seven years later (June 1953) and now known as the Lyndoch/Williamstown RSLSub Branch, this group was about to realise a long held ambition to have its own clubrooms wheremembers could meet and entertain. Following the 2nd World War the membership had grown to 50-60members and as their meetings were conducted in the small room upstairs at the front of the SoldiersMemorial Hall there was an urgent need for a new building.

A building committee had been selected comprising Arnold Wilson, Strath Smith and Gordon Will. A LadiesAuxiliary had also been formed to assist with fund-raising, conducting trading tables, organising fortnightlydances and other activities to add to the building fund.

Construction: For some months members had been conducting working bees with Gus Grigg laying thefoundations of the clubroom and Gilbert Warren doing the stonework.

Arnold Wilson had salvaged the stone from the Wangalere Homestead building (which had beendemolished as part of the South Para Reservoir construction) and transported it to Williamstown for use inthe building.

George Warren donated a large red gum tree which was milled by Geoff Mewett’s saw mill for the floorjoists.

Linsey Cooper donated a big pine tree which Mewett’s milled for the roof rafters

On Saturday 9th May the Foundation stone was laid by Mr. G. K. G. Warren M.B.E., one of the oldestresidents of this district.

As money for the building was getting short, Arnold Wilson took it on himself to purchase the roofing ironon his a/c from Harris Scarfe’s which was eventually repaid by the R.S.L..

By the end of 1953 there was a roof on the clubrooms and it was anticipated that the interior would becompleted by June and in fact, the monthly meeting was held in the clubrooms on June 17th.

The RSL Members bought the timber for the kitchen floor and Joe Holmes said he would see the hallopened debt free which he did.

Joy Wilson with the help of other ladies started fund-raising to equip the building.

On Monday 27th November 1954 the State Secretary of the R.S.S. & A.I.L.A (Mr. Pritchard) and Mr. D.S.Clarke, MP were present at the official opening of the new Clubrooms which had been built mainly byvolunteers, at Williamstown. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr. J. K. Barritt, chairman ofBarossa District Council and Rev. Armstrong of Williamstown dedicated the building.

The beginning of the end: Thirty one years later, the building of the South Para Reservoir is completed,many workers and their families have moved on and the membership of the R.S.L. has dropped awayquickly. By the early 1980’s it had dwindled to 3-4 members and the building had started to deteriorate.

Secretary Ken Semmler consulted the R.S.L. in Adelaide who advised the R.S.L. Hall be handed over to theWar Memorial Community Council along with the memorabilia.

The future: Williamstown Senior Citizens expressed an interest in utilising the R.S.L. Hall and on July 10th1986 their first meeting was held in the Hall. Protracted lease negotiations continued until April 7th 1987when a 5 year lease agreement was drawn up with the Williamstown War Memorial Community Council.This was followed by approval in March 1989 to build a new Hall and toilets on the side of the RSL Hall and a new 99 year lease.

In May 1990, Williamstown War Memorial Community Council handed over control of all land andbuildings to the District Council of Barossa, control became effective Nov. 1991.

In July 1992 the new Williamstown Senior Citizens Hall was officially opened by then President, Mr. FrankFarley. In August 1992 it was declared that the RSL Building will be known as such and the new buildingwill be known as the Williamstown Senior Citizens.

It is important to note that whilst there are two buildings joined together but with separate names, bothstructures as a whole have been taken under the wing of the Williamstown Senior Citizens who haveprovided excellent care for both of them over many years.

Guild Fellowship April meeting heard about the wonderful work by school chaplains (who have another name now), with many thanks to Debbie. May 16th Meeting at 1.30pm Norma will give a floral demonstration and we invite friends to join us at any of our friendly meetings.

The month of May has 4 special Sundays: Mother’s Day 8th May; Pentecost 15th May; Trinity Sunday 22nd May; and 29th is reconciliation Sunday. All Welcome always 10am.

Play Group very active and growing, back after school holidays.

Williamstown Uniting Church Garden Club held their social meeting for the year with a barbeque at the home of Tricia Sloper and thanks were extended to Tricia for sharing her home and lovely garden with us. Members enjoyed some quizzes and trivia and lucky raffle winners were Marie, Kathy Tregeagle, Betty Cooke and Tricia Sloper. Birthday Greetings to Des, Pat & Gilbert. Congratulations to Aaron Wilkin, the lucky winner of the beautiful handmade Crows Rug.

Ref. Williamstown 2016 ANZAC Day Service

Reports being received from those people who attended the Service this year indicate they were very happy with the format and presentation of the ceremony. I myself thought we had done a pretty fair job of it and comments on the day supported this.

You can’t go wrong when you have a pipe band supporting you and with the Tanunda Pipe Band, led by Piper Peter Whitehead, playing a stirring tune and leading our little group of marchers at the beginning we were off to a great start. Several Veterans and the Barossa Scout Group participated in this.

Our Master of Ceremonies was the venerable Michael Langan who always excels in this duty and his factual historical presentation is always of interest. Michael was assisted by Koby Grace (the ODE) and Natalie Johnson (ANZAC Day history) and Father Steven de Kleer who handled the religious readings and prayers.

292 Squadron from RAAF Base Edinburgh provided the Catafalque Party and our bugler was Stuart Jones, from Nuriootpa High School.

Wreaths were laid by veterans and family members as well as SAPOL and MP representatives.

As always in Williamstown, it is the efforts of the volunteers who made the Service the success that it was. Members of the History group and their families put in a lot of time and effort to make it all happen on the day

The CFS, led by Steve Elliott (also our Flagman) always do a fantastic job preparing and serving the traditional Gunfire Breakfast in the RSL Hall where the Sing Australia group from Gawler kept everyone entertained.

Community Council providing a sound system (operated by David and Kate Thorsteinsen) has solved the problems we have experienced in the past with some people towards the back of the crowd not being able to hear the Service.

My sincere thanks to all the volunteers and to the people of Williamstown and the surrounding districts, we all thank YOU for supporting our Dawn Service , your attendance and appreciation has certainly made it all worthwhile.

An election is upon us with the confirmation the Prime Minister will call a Double Dissolution election on 2 July 2016. This election will give Australians a choice about the future they want for Australia.

Only Labor has a positive plan. To make sure you are election ready, here is a list on how to prepare:

1. Check you are correctly enrolled to vote on the AEC website. If you haven’t previously enrolled to vote or if you have moved, or changed your name and not updated your enrolment take the time to do so now.

2. Check your diary for 2 July 2016. If you won’t be able to vote on the day let me know so I can get you a postal vote application form.

3. Have a look at Labor’s Positive Policies which are available on our website, www.alp.org.au/positive_policies

4. Let me know if you want to join with me to fight for South Australian jobs and to keep standing up for the north. Contact my office for further details on (08) 8284 4222.
