From the Principal

Many thanks to the SRC for organising the fundraising venture “Fund a Farmer”. A fantastic way to support a primary production area that many of our families are experiencing difficulties in at the moment. Even though there has been some rain, there needs to be more to break that drought cycle that is being experienced. Students were inspired by dressing up as farmers and others like Ned took it to another level, bringing in his stockwhip. Ned demonstrated how to crack the whip (many times on request) and spoke also about breaking in horses, spurs and that his younger brother could even crack a whip. Thank you Ned for answering everyone’s questions.

NAPLAN has been uppermost in student thoughts, family discussions and on the news regarding the online aspect of the testing. I am very pleased to say that with the mammoth organisation from Leanne Opperman in the lead up to the tests and the technical support from Charles Benstead, we have not experienced any big concerns. At this stage we are part way through the process, giving the students a day of rest between each on, this also allows for any ‘catch up’ by students who missed the test due to absence.

Some discussion at Governing Council was held on Monday night regarding the amount of time young people are spending on screens (phone, computer or tablet) and the influences on development. You may wish to check out this link for some information. https://www.abc.net.au/radio/

Kindy News

This week for Show & Share the children brought something that begins with the letter 'T'. We have had lots of tractors, trailers and trains. Harriet brought in some tea called 'High Tea with Harriet' and Meg brought in a torch. We have lots of train enthusiasts at Kindy so we have decided to visit 'Steamtown' in Peterborough in a few weeks. We also visited school on Tuesday.

On Thursday we worked with Lauren to make some paints with herbs and spices. We mixed thyme, paprika and turmeric to make different coloured paints. 'The paint is drippy' said Jenny. 'It makes the painting smell' said Harriet. We also drew pictures of trees to order from shortest to tallest. We are going to make them into a book to show the residents of Mount View Homes next week.

Kindy and Rural Care Staff

Primary News This coming Wednesday we have some very exciting events. We will be

hosting the Living Safety with Pets team as an incursion for all primary students. Sessions for each class will be run throughout the day. This program is a new initiative from the Cats and Dag Management board. There will be a live dog in the presentation so please contact your class teacher is there will be any issues around this.

The program uses multimedia, role play, song & story with our characters Victor the Dog, & Victoria the Cat who provide primary school aged children with a variety of stimulating activities to teach a wide range of concepts relating to “responsible pet ownership “ such as the importance of being safe around dogs.

When dogs should be left alone, even the family dog or a friend’s dog. What to do if approached by an unknown dog/unfriendly dog. The safe way to approach and greet a dog. Things we should not do to dogs. Situations when we should leave dogs alone.

We will also take part in the National Simultaneous Storytime at 11am. We will read the story Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove.

As winter approaches, students’ absence due to illness often rises. We would like to remind parents that the school needs notification for all absences. This can be in the form of a note in your child’s diary or a call to the school.

Finally, we will be having our Primary assembly on the 23rd of June. Parents are invited to come in the morning to celebrate student success and see what the students have been up to in their classes. The assembly will be held near the R/1 and 2/3/4 classrooms starting at 2:45pm, we hope to see you there!
