ST PAUL’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, MT LAWLEY - FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT - 1 NEWSLETTER TERM 1 WEEK 3 February 19 2015 PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Members of the St Paul’s Community It was great to see so many happy families at the P&F Family Sundowner on Sunday. Our thanks go to Clare Salfinger and Beck Hampson for organising the DJ and Sausage Sizzle. This event is always great fun and gives everyone the opportunity to welcome new families and catch up with old friends. Parent Information Night Thank you to all the parents who came to the Parent Teacher Meetings on Tuesday night. This is an important opportunity to meet the staff, especially your child’s teachers, who can explain classroom routines and their expectations for the year. Research has shown that a close working relationship between parents and the school has a major impact on student learning. Many thanks go to our dedicated staff for staying back late to present their meetings. Ash Wednesday The children got off to a great start for Lent this week with our Ash Wednesday ceremonies. The older children went to Mass at the church, while the younger children attended special “Ashing” services in the Heritage Hall. We are very grateful to Fr Tim for devoting his morning so that all the children could attend appropriate and meaningful services. Their discussions with Fr Tim showed their insight into the significance of Lent and the need for us all to turn to God in preparation for Easter. It’s a Boy! Congratulations to the Giumelli family, Nikki, James, Imogen (Year 4), Meghan (Yr 2) and Lachlan (Year 1) on the birth of their new baby boy this Tuesday. We hope this new bundle of joy will bring you much love and happiness. Sacramental Commitment Masses will be held this Saturday 21 February at 6.00pm and

Sunday 22 February at 8.00am and 9.30am. The Masses will be held in the school’s Barbier

sacraments must attend one of these Masses. The children love signing the Commitment

Register on the altar during these special Masses as a commitment to preparing for the

Sacrament during the year. It is also an opportunity for the community to pray for these

students and their families.

I.T. ZONE

Exciting things are happening at St Paul’s this year with Information Technology. Interactive LED televisions have now

been installed in the new Year 1 and 2 classrooms to further engage students. With iPads being used in all classes from

Pre-Primary to Year 6, Chrome books being used in the upper primary and Year 6 having a one-to-one desktop program,

it’s no wonder the students are excited.

Year 6 have been studying leadership and what makes a good leader. They have selected a noteworthy person to whom

they aspire, to research and present their findings back to the class. Students have used the computers to conduct

research, take notes, create an interactive PowerPoint presentation with visuals, animations and audio over each slide.

Some students have also added hyperlinks, which allow for relevant videos to be watched during the presentation. They

are so eager to present their work. It’s great to see. Check out a few of our leadership presentations below.

SMART WORDS PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT (PP-Yr 6)

Please join us for an informative evening next Wednesday February 25th from 6:45-7:45pm in the Barbier

Hall. Smart Words author Julie Bradley will be conducting the parent information session on the new

spelling program being implemented at St Paul’s in 2015. It is important that parents are aware of the

programs and initiatives that run across the school so please take up this opportunity to further your own

spelling knowledge and keep up-to-date with how students are learning to spell in the 21st century. We

look forward to seeing as many parents there as possible.

Year 6 Leaders

Last Friday the Year Six students were commissioned as leaders of the school. All students belong to one of

four ministries: Christian Leadership, Sport & Environment, Library or Events. Each ministry is responsible

for leading different facets of the school. Congratulations to our Year 6 leaders. We know you will do St

Paul’s proud!

Shrove Tuesday

In preparation for Lent and Ash Wednesday the students in Year 6 decided to make pancakes this week. In order get to the creation stage students had to write procedural texts outlining a recipe to follow. They had to research Ash Wednesday and Shrove Tuesday and find out the significance of the two events. In pairs, students presented their information in poster format using the program Microsoft Publisher. Once these two tasks were done, it was time to measure out the ingredients and cook up the pancakes. All I can say is, if you don’t follow the recipe properly your pancake doesn’t taste so good, as a few of the boys found out! Check out the students having some pancake fun.

Everyone is welcome to attend these sessions. Children who make the interschool squad are strongly encouraged to attend the final two training sessions to practise starts and relay changeovers prior to the interschool carnival. I will require confirmation of attendance to ensure we have enough supervision at the pool. Any help from parents would be much appreciated. COMMUNITY NEWS

Project Compassion

This week we commenced Lent as we celebrated Ash Wednesday. By now, all families would have received their

Project Compassion boxes. During Lent, it is a great opportunity to think about others and how we might help them.

Caritas is an organisation that has been around for 50 years and with the support of people like ourselves, they can

continue to work towards providing support for those less fortunate than ourselves. The theme this year is “Food For

Life”. It throws a spotlight on global food issues and how Caritas Australia is empowering the world’s poorest people to

establish sustainable food sources for life.

This year Project Compassion focuses on the ways in which our partners empower communities to establish

sustainable food, walking with them as they free themselves from the burden of food insecurity and develop new,

improved income streams for a better future. Last year Project Compassion raised nearly $11 million, let us continue to

support this worthy organisation to help build a more just and fair world for all.

Below is an example of how our donations can help provide much needed resources around the world to help make

others’ lives more comfortable.

$5= A tray of seedlings, so a farmer can diversify the crops they grow on their farm in Fiji.

$20= Could provide a 105 litre water storage container, so a family of seven can have improved access to drink water

in Niger.

$75= Could provide ingredients, so that eight mums can learn how to cook a healthy meal in Australia.

$300= Could provide a five day training course for 10-15 people, so they can learn to raise and sell fish in Nepal.

$930= Could provide two adult dairy cows for a farmer, so his family can generate a stable source of income in

Indonesia.

These are just some of the ways the money is used in supporting these communities. Project Compassion helps end

poverty and promote justice so the world’s poor won’t need to rely on charity. We must continue to pray as a

community to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

Each person is a member of society, and we are all called to further the development of human society as a whole.

Populorum Progressio, 1967, #17
