A message from the Headteacher

I write to you all once again at the end of another busy term and year; there is so much to be proud of and celebrate this year and I want to congratulate everyone for their contribution to making the school a happy and successful place to learn. Our year 11 students were once again magnificent during the exam period. Their conduct, attitude and commitment was exemplary and we look forward to seeing them in August, hopefully celebrating another set of fantastic results. Certainly, their approach merits success. We enjoyed giving them all a good send off at their prom and Leavers’ Day a couple of weeks ago. Year 10 are now the senior students and we are delighted to have appointed the following students as Year 11 Student Leaders for next year: Head Girl—Isabella Barkas, Deputy Head Girls—Lara De Moura and Libby Styles. Head Boy - Ahmet Celik, Deputy Head Boys— Alfie Murray and Curtis Edwards.

Year 10 showed their maturity and positive attitudes in their work experience just this week. We have had universally positive feedback about the manners, politeness and respect they have shown in various workplaces in the city and beyond. Well done to all involved and thanks to those staff who have been instrumental in organising the placements. Successful trips, Sports Day, Year 9 KPMG challenge, the 24 hour musical, Awards Evening, the Fete are amongst some of the other highlights that spring to mind. Of course, it is the time of year when we say goodbye to a number of staff moving on to new challenges or stages of their lives. Moving on this summer are Mrs Eades, Miss Welsh and, of course, Mr Plant is retiring from a long and memorable career in teaching. We wish them all well with their future plans and endeavours. You can read more about Mr Plant in the newsletter. We welcome new teaching staff for September - Miss Biddle (Science), Miss Bran-field (Drama), Mrs Griffiths (English). We all wish to thank parents/carers for their continued support. We would draw your attention to the letter sent earlier this week detailing arrange-ments for start times in September. We would also ask you to discuss the safe-guarding issues we raised with your sons/daughters. We want everyone to enjoy their break but to come back to us safe and sound in the Autumn. Finally, we are delighted to be launching Broadening Horizons in September; we aim to have more enrichment activities after school than ever before, a brand new house system with events and challenges across a wide range of subject areas and a new programme of trips and visits that we hope to run for all students with a view to en-riching the experience that is gained in the classroom. We hope all students will find something that they can enjoy. Wishing you all a relaxing and happy summer break.

‘Endeavour Forever’

Year 11 Class of 2019 It was with a tear in my eye that I made my final farewell to our Year 11 students. The morning be-gan with a celebratory breakfast followed by shirt signing and lots of goodbye hugs. I then, for the last time, walked my year group over to the theatre for an act of collective worship. The farewell began with a discussion about always keeping your jar of life topped up with the really important things such as your family, friends and loved ones. It is so easy in this modern, busy, media driven world to not take the time for the people that really matter and I wanted to take the opportunity to remind Year 11 of the importance of their loved ones. This was then

followed by parody of the year with some amusing awards such as worst school photo and latest student. These were met with good humour and giggles. Mr Pollard discussed with the students the importance of maintaining friendships by ensuring that you take the time to look up from mobile de-vice and make real human connections. Head Girl Nyasha Mwera and Head Boy Tom Fowles gave some very moving leaving speeches reflecting up-on the support they have had from all students, staff and also their parents. The act of worship concluded with a reflection on the importance of love in your life in all its many forms. Students then prepared for the ball with many returning to Bishop

Year 11 Leavers Ball—June 2019

As I stood on the steps of the Worcester Cricket Ground on a sunny Thursday evening watching all of Year 11 arrive looking so sophisti-cated and grown up I allowed myself a moment to reflect on how far they have all come in this short year. I am so immensely proud of the educational and personal journey that all our Bishop Perowne Year 11 students have made. I felt like the glowing parent of all 135 of them as they descended their various vehicles dressed in their finest. There were beautiful gowns that reminded me of Belle from 'Beauty and the Beast' (a personal favourite of mine as a child) and sophisticated frocks that wouldn't have been out of place on the set

of 'The Great Gats-by'. The boys cer-tainly did-n't disappoint with many a dapper suit to be seen. The transport was also very eye catching from a tractor, to a truck, to a hot rod to an old Morgan. What was even more lovely to see though was that on the dance floor not a single student was left out eve-ry one of them was up and dancing and those with more

confidence danced with the shyest to ensure no one was alone on this special evening. There have been so many successes for each student in Year 11 and I look forward to celebrating with them during results day but actually what I believe truly sets Bishop Perowne apart is that we have developed a group of young adults who are so inclusive and respectful of one another that every single one of them was up and having a fantastic night at the leavers ball. All together, all celebrating and all

supporting one another, one giant family. The night ended with dancing to the Year 11 theme song 'The greatest' by Cia and it is fair to say that they have been my greatest year group. Mrs Reeve-McKew

Mathematics Department News

Numeracy Week 2019 took place during the week com-mencing May 13

th. Throughout the week form groups partici-

pated in a variety of different activities involving numeracy. Form groups in all key stages took on the challenge of an-swering numeracy and problem solving questions and rid-dles ranging from easy to difficult. Throughout the entire week close to 1000 numeracy questions were attempted! In the end, 8JPN were the first tutor group to successfully an-swering all questions earning them a bonus 100 points. Throughout the week, students were challenged to research how numeracy plays a role in nature, created their own unit of measure, prepared a maths themed dessert, and record-ed/displayed a collection of data. Students were very crea-tive resulting in outstanding pieces of work. The effort, hard work, and attention to detail was evident in all activities and the students and form groups should be proud of the commitment and dedication they displayed. After the dust settled, all the points were tallied and the top three classes for Numeracy Week 2019 were as follows:

First Place and Champions: 9JPE

Second Place: 7DPE

Third Place: 8JPN

The Maths Department would like to congratulate each of the students who took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Over 270,000 students across the UK sat the Junior Maths Challenge with roughly 6% receiving a gold certificate, the next 13% receiving Silver and the next 21% receiving Bronze. Performing Arts Department News Oliver - The Musical

The full school musical of Oliver was performed to packed hous-

es over its three night run. With the ingenious stage direction of

Mr Plant and music by Mrs Peters the stu-

dents enjoyed a very successful run. As al-

ways students were involved not only on

stage but back stage such as props, stage

management, lighting and make up . Finally

the Victorian city of London depicted in the

storyline was brought to life through the pro-

jections and lighting ideas of our theatre

manager Ed Steelefox.

Supported by the friends of Bishop Perowne

on each night with a raffle with proceeds to-

ward the performing arts extracurricular pro-

jects. a good time was had by all. We would like to thank the Mal-

vern Theatre players for their generous support in costuming this

show.

Choral Day with St Barnabas

Mrs Peters and the Bishop Perowne Choir and Chamber Choir hosted a choral day

with 50 St Barnabas students. During the workshop students were taught the song

"Revolting". Later in the workshop Miss Alexander taught some group choreogra-

phy to complete the work before the piece was performed by both Bishop Perowne

and St Barnabas students.

work creating a dance piece over two 1hour session. With a

few ribbon batons and mats the girls created a stunning piece of

work that Year 5 were thrilled to perform at their very sunny

fete. Accompanied by Hasna Ahmed and Shivani Suith Kumar,

from Year 10 with some traditional Khathak dance.

The girls were warmly welcomed into the school and in fact

have been asked back in the autumn to look at a project based on Brazil. Congratulations.

Performing Arts Department News Picture of Dorian Gray - Malvern Theatre

Year 11 GCSE Drama students were treated to a theatre visit to support

their GCSE drama theory paper. The production supported the writing of

section B of the theory paper. The evening was enjoyed by all.

Vamos Theatre Company

Year 10 students were visited by Vamos Theatre Company who are

based at the Arts workshop in Worcester. Vamos are a full mask company

specialising in this area of drama.

Our next school musical has

been cast. All 60+ students

look forward to rehearsing

the play ’Back to the 80's’.

As always students were

chosen on merit for all roles.

Twenty places will be availa-

ble for the new Year 7 in

September. The musical will be performed February of 2020.

Mary Poppins - The 24hour Musical

Over 50 students from Years 7 to Year 10 were charged with producing

a musical from start to finish in just 16 hours. Beginning on Monday 8th

July at 8.30am students were informed of their roles and work began.

The result on Tuesday 9th at 7pm was

stunning with a full musical, costumed,

choreographer, sung and acted all 165

pages of it! Performing to a packed

audience the story of Mary Poppins

came to life with the help of the Arts team and our new drama

teacher Miss Branfield and student placement Georgia Surridge.

The students worked extremely hard although found it challenging

but were surprised and pleased with their invitation to BBC Worces-

ter and Hereford Radio who recorded the well-known Supercalfragalistic song will full gusto. On the

10th July the students were again on the radio discussing the after effects and success on the play.

Congratulations must go to the cast and crew .

As ever students were involved in all aspects of the production from the dance captains to the light-

ing and sound. Congratulations everyone.

Performing Arts Department News Performing Arts and MFL European Tour 2020

This term has seen the launch of the next European tour - Disney-

land Paris. The price of the tour is £530 paid over 3 instalments with

an £80 deposit to secure the place. This price includes all travel ac-

commodation, entry to site seeking attractions, morning and evening

meal and of course Disneyland and studios. If you would like more

information please contact Miss Alexander on alexan-

[email protected]. There are now only a few spaces re-

maining so time is of the essence. 10 spaces will be held for the

new Year 7 students in September.

Finally...

We say goodbye to Mr Plant but hello to Miss Branfield. Mr Plant has had a long and distinguished

career both in the professional world of drama and education. We wish him a long and happy retire-

ment and welcome him back to school at any time. Equally we welcome Miss Branfield to the team

and wish her every success.

Sports Department News

Summer School Games 2019

The Year 9 Rounders team won the City Rounders compe-tition which was a qualifier for the School Games. This took place in Bromsgrove on Monday 2nd July.

The girls played 5 matches against Holy Trinity, South Bromsgrove, Prince Henrys, Wolverly, and The Chase. They really worked so hard as a team against tough opposi-tion. We finished in 3rd position with two other schools on equal points, it then went to rounders averages to get a final order putting us 4th.

Some of the girls could remember taking part in the Games when they were in primary school and again as leaders for the Tri Golf.

This was a great experience for our students who received compliments from the umpires on good sportsmanship and resilience.

Year 1 Multi Skills Festival

On 28th June we held a Multi skills event for year 1 children. St Barnabas and Perdiswell and St

Georges all took part with a total of 120 children. They were greeted by Year 8 leaders who were

running this event.

The leaders setting up all the different stations to improve speed, agility and co-ordination. They

took a group of 10 children for a warm up and then the children had about 8 minutes on a selection

of fun activities. It was fantastic to see our leaders grow in confidence throughout the event. They

found it rewarding to see the children having fun whilst learning new skills and are already asking

when our next event is. Many staff commented on how mature our student leaders were and how

kind they were to the little ones.

Duke of Edinburgh Award at Bishop Perowne On Friday 21st June, 10 year 10 students start-ed their expedition training on a day walk around Kinver Edge . They completed 9.3 miles learning how to map read; orientate a map; read the landscape around them; pace and monitor their speed and distance covered; and most importantly how to follow a route. The stu-dents learned really quickly and we were im-pressed by their teamwork and navigation skills

by the end of the first day.

The following week they then planned their own route for their 2 day expedition in the Cotswolds and set off on the following Friday to complete their walk and overnight camp whilst carrying all of their kit.

They managed this really well,- team work was evi-dent in their planning - rucksacks were not overloaded and well packed and their navigation was, on the whole, spot on!!

To complete this award now they must complete a skill, volunteering and physical section over the next 3 months.

EAL Department News The EAL department has had a busy summer term preparing some students for their Portuguese, Polish and Turkish GCSEs and supporting others as they

take their exams alongside all the other Year 11s. GCSEs are challenging normally but even more so if English is not your first language! Whatever grades the EAL students achieve, we salute their hard work and commitment and we are immensely proud of them all.

Other highlights this term have been our Year 7 EAL trip to St George’s Church to visit their wonderful Kingdom Arts’ Festival and a visit to Worcester Arena to participate in the Multicultural Sports day run for secondary schools by the University. Both events were very successful and enjoyable.

We have now introduced a new house system to help encourage after-school activities and partici-pation in solo and team events. There has been a friendly and competitive atmosphere since the launch and the new heads of house are getting stuck in! There is a great list of house events for all to get involved with during the next school year. We have Ms Long heading up Oswald (blue), Mr Baker leading Wulfstan (yellow), Miss Elmes championing Dunstan (red) and Mrs Finnimore guiding Goodrich (green).

New for September 2019—House System

KPMG Work Ready Hackathon ‘The only skill that will be important in the 21st Century is the skill of learning

new skills’ KPMG volunteers and experienced Transformation Trust facilita-tors supported our Year 9 students to understand and ex-plore emerging technology that transforms how businesses solve

everyday problems. Students worked on developing skills such as teamwork, problem solving, resilience, digital aware-ness and presentation skills. There ‘work ready’ workshops introduced students to a real-life situa-tion that Year 9 had to propose a solution to using modern technology, and more specifically the Mi-crosoft’s HoloLens. Once students had generated a possible solution they also had to identify any barriers to their solu-tion as well as review how well they had worked as a team. Once that had all been decided students then worked together to present their findings to the rest of Year 9 and a panel of judges. The win-ning team then gets entered into the regional final to win an all-expenses paid visit to the Design Centre in London during the Autumn Term. In addition; as part of the KPMG Work Ready Hackathon students will also earn a badge for the Duke of York’s Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA). The award aspires to be the digital and en-terprise equivalent to the Duke of Edinburgh award and this badge can help then towards their Bronze Award.

Day Two: Students

STEM Club 2018-2019 Wow, what a great year we have had in STEM! Every Thursday we have had be-tween 20-30 students engaging in a variety of practical opportunities and wit-nessing whizz bang demonstrations! Regardless of gender or age group, every-one has blended in well to the club each week, supporting each other to experi-ence the wide range of science experiments that we do. In March we took 45 students to the Big Bang fair at the NEC in Birmingham. Needless to say, the students were beaming at the end of a day jam-packed with numerous science stalls showcasing the scientific things they do on a daily basis, which I hope has helped to inspire our students about future STEM career pathways. In addition to the Thursday club, we continue to run a Tuesday CREST club, where students devel-op independence and social skills by completing a project, enabling them to receive a nationally cer-tified award which looks great on college applications! We hope to have several students achieving bronze and silver CREST awards when they return in September. The new academic year brings new opportunities in STEM club - we are in the process of organising a trip each term to supplement our annual Big Bang Fair trip. We are also contacting STEM ambas-sadors and Universities to become more closely aligned to their outreach programmes, with visitors coming in to share ground breaking science with our students. We also hope to replicate this pro-cess by reaching out to primary schools in the area and sharing what we do at STEM club to help inspire the next generation of scientists! Many thanks to the students that make the STEM club what it is and for supportive parents who show great patience and understanding when their children arrive home covered in corn starch! We go again in September!

MFL Department Trip to France 2020 October 2020 will see a group of our current Year 7 and 8 students embarking on a five day trip to Orléans in France. These lucky students will, by then, be in Year 9 and 10 respectively, studying for their French GCSE. The Modern Foreign Languages department see this as an invaluable oppor-tunity to improve spoken language skills, to broaden general knowledge about the French way of life and to have some fun!

Students will spend five days on the trip, leaving on Friday October 2nd and returning the following Tuesday. We will be staying in a 3* hotel in Orléans , which will be our base for the visit. We will spend Saturday seeing the sights in Paris and enjoying a boat trip on the Riv-er Seine. On Sunday we have a day pass for Futuroscope Theme Park.

On Monday we will visit our partner school in Orléans, spending the day in lessons, absorbing the atmosphere of life in a French school. This will be a unique experience.
