Pupil Achievements

Well done to Edward Rushmore who was invited by the Northants Schools Chess Association to be part of the U11 team at the Midlands Chess Championship on 10th February. They came in 3rd place, with Edward winning one of his matches.

Congratulations also to Aidan Jaggard who was awarded the tro-phy for ‘Most Im-proved Junior Player’ by Northants County Golf Club.

Scholarship Success

I am delighted to announce that Neeya Bhadresha has been awarded an Academic Scholarship to North-ampton High School. This is a fine achievement - many congratulations indeed to Neeya.

County Cricket

Huge congratulations to Toby Cousins who has made the final selection for the U13 Northamptonshire County Cricket squad. Only 14 players have been selected, so this is a fine achievement indeed.

History Week

This has been a splendid History Week with the children being fully captivated by the speaker who came in on Monday and Tuesday. The History Café was also particularly well received, where the children were given the opportunity to taste food from the time of the First World War. Then, yesterday, I enjoyed watching many of the children learn the Foxtrot, which they then performed at the end of lunch break on the terrace as a ‘flash-mob’! Thank you to Mrs Hemmings and the History Department for all their extra efforts this week.

World Book Day

We are very much looking forward to more special events in school next week with the many World Book Day events that will be taking place throughout the week. The highlight will no doubt be World Book Day itself on Thursday when the children from Reception to Year 8 will be coming to school dressed as a book character. Last year, we invited the children up to Year 6 to dress as a book character, but many of Years 7 and 8 were somewhat disappointed to miss out and made special requests through School Council that this year they be included - we are only too happy to do so! It was equally lovely to see the staff in costume last year too; they are busily planning this year’s outfits – any excuse to dress-up!

Please do remember that costumes do not have to be ‘all singing and dancing’ – there are some very sim-ple costumes that can be created or the children could come to school armed with clues pertaining to their chosen book character. It should be a very special day but, of course, the main message that must come through is how vital and fulfilling reading is and how wonderful it can be when one is lost in a book!

Chinese New Year

Among the special events taking place this week, 5W found the time to present an assembly to Years 4&5 about the Chinese New Year, with Isabella Lang beautifully narrating the assembly – and how well she did, considering English is her second language – well done Isabella and 5W.

Parent/Teacher Meetings

This term’s programme of Parent/Teacher meetings began this week with Year 4 last night. Next week, the Year 6 meeting is on Tuesday and Year 7 on Thursday. These begin at 6.00 pm in the Dome, with last entry for parents please at 7.00 pm.

Uppingham Music Day

I have heard wonderful reports as to the Uppingham Orchestral Day yesterday, where the concert culmi-nated in 350 young prep school musicians performing together after just one day’s rehearsal. These activi-ties are a wonderful experience for the children and we are very grateful to Uppingham for putting the whole day together.

Tours

Next week, the 1st VII Netball team and 1st XI Hockey team go on tour which, for the girls, incorporates their IAPS Regional Finals at Uppingham. I wish them all the very best; I am sure they will enjoy the whole tour experience.

Years 5&6 Cross-Country

House Competitions Years 6, 7 & 8 Humanities

Year 7 House Gaming

Boys’ Individual: 1st Ed Cassidy 2nd Henry Lewis 3rd Ed Beaumont

Boys’ House: 1st Raleigh 2nd Grenville 3rd Drake 4th Frobisher

Girls’ Individual: 1st Georgia Coker-Agar 2nd Bella Ruddle 3rd Emily Beaumont

Girls’ House: 1st Raleigh 2nd Drake 3rd Grenville 4th Frobisher

Another exciting round of House Gaming saw Year 7 pupils take on ‘Rayman Raving Rabbids’ on the Wii. After some slightly ‘off-the-wall’ and energetic games involving train racing, rabbit wrestling, chicken shooting, ball collecting and horse racing, all with a twist, a consistent performance saw Jovan Cheema for Frobisher just pip Alfred Wheeler for Drake, although all the competitors won at least one event. A good crowd of Year 7 pupils cheered them on, in what proved to be a close contest.

Calendar Amendment:

The Years 3 and 4 House Netball and Football matches on Tuesday 13th March have been brought forward (due to a clash) to Thursday 8th March. Matches still start at 3.00 pm.

The annual search for the school’s best polymaths took place on Tuesday – otherwise known as the House Humanities Quiz. Who could recognise Muslim symbols, or the river that John was baptised in? Who could decipher the vowel-less countries or piece together clues to capital cities? Who could under-stand Mr Dow’s Classical pictograms, or think of the most English derivations from the Latin word “specto”? And finally, and appropriately during History week, who could spot the Odd King Out or recognise the hidden historical item?? Well, it turned out that Andrew, Toby and Lara were by far the best at all these, and more besides, as they romped home for a Grenville win. Drake were second with Frobisher and Raleigh bringing up the rear. Not even the sight of four staff in fancy dress could spoil this fantastic quiz – as one pupil asked their Form Tutor – “Why was that teacher dressed up as the Tooth Fairy?” (To clarify – Mrs Roberts had actually come as an Angel!!)

Swanbourne Chase Cross-Country

Well done to all those that competed at the Swanbourne Chase before half term. It was a very exciting event with 16 schools taking part.

The Junior Girls A Team came 1st overall with Georgia Coker-Agar 2nd, Bella Ruddle 6th, Camilla Young 9th, Emily Beaumont 10th then Jemima Cooper.

The Junior Girls B Team came a tremendous 6th, a great result for a B Team, with Charlotte Hull first runner home in 17th , Claudia Hill 20th, Angel Hanford 23rd followed by Bea Orme-Smith and Emily Jessop.

The Junior Boys came 4th overall, Edward Cassidy had a strong run in at 9th with Henry Lewis hot on his heels 10th,

Edward Beaumont 14th, Thomas Church 21st, Jonty Ling 28th followed by Oliver Jones

The Senior Girls ran in a very contentious battle against the Dragon School. We just missed out on first place by 2 points with a score of 21 to the Dragon’s 18. Well done to Olivia Williams who came a fantastic 2nd with Harriett Round immediately behind in 3rd and Florence Hooper 5th, Lauren Hewett 11th and shortly afterwards Rebecca Eales and Isabelle Wright.

The Senior Boys came 6th overall with an impressive run from Jasper Cooper coming 3rd. It was great to have so many new runners in the team as the IAPS Hockey was on at the same time. Well done to Archie Dadley 23rd, Matthew Wilson 32nd, Edward Brook 33rd, Jack Peters 40th, Toby Haxby 65th and Finn Wilkinson 68th.

Safety Notice

There has been an article in the local press this week about one particular make of “putty” which has been found to contain dangerously high levels of arsenic.

The link to the story is http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-42830755

It should be stressed that this is NOT all makes of putty, but just this one called “My Magnetic Putty”.

Please could parents check the origin of your son/daughter’s putty, if relevant.

Finally, whilst on the subject, it would also be useful to remind your son/daughter that putty (of any kind) should not be out in lessons!

Many thanks—R Dow, Deputy Head

Uppingham Orchestral Day

We always have a wonderful day at the Uppingham Orchestral

Day and this year was no different. The day began with sec-

tional rehearsals with the specialist Uppingham staff before

joining together to form a massed orchestra of about 350 play-

ers! It really was spectacular and everybody had an absolutely

brilliant time and learnt a huge amount.

ABRSM Exams These will take place on Monday 12th and

Tuesday 13th March. A timetable will been displayed in the

Music Department and will also be available to view on the

website next week. Please let Miss Morrell know if there are

any problems.

Music Lessons Individual music lessons are available on a

wide range of instruments as well as singing. Please speak to

Miss Morrell if you are interested in your child learning an in-

strument.

Cancelled Clubs Thursday 1st March

Spanish Club is cancelled due to Parent/Teacher

Meetings.

Monday 5th March & Monday 12th March

Gym Club is cancelled due to Parent/Teacher Meetings.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Home Clothes Day

Thank you to everyone who sup-

ported Home Clothes Day on the

last day of half term. We man-

aged to raise £266.30 for this

worthwhile charity.

Artist of the Week goes to Ophelia and Henry Lowin for

their joint self-portrait. I hope this will be a good

memory of their time at Spratton and what a great thing

to have done together.

Well done.

Once again this year, the Prep School will be joining Pre-

Prep in marking World Book Day on Thursday 1st March

by inviting pupils in Years 3-8 to dress up as their favour-

ite character from a book, if they would like to. This is

not a home clothes day, but a chance for pupils (and

staff) to show who and what they have been reading

about. Please could pupils wear a sticker or badge dis-

playing their character’s name and the book which they

appear in. Pupils could even bring the book along with

them.

It has been lovely catching up with all the children again following the half-term break. The

many pairs of shiny shoes and the smart new haircuts, not to mention the variety of trophies,

medals and certificates that have been paraded triumphantly before my eyes, tell me that it

was a busy and productive week for many!

With the Chinese New Year celebrations now at a close, the Reception children have been re-

flecting on the amazing discoveries that they have made whilst developing their awareness of

this special festival. From crunching carrot sticks in time with a giant panda and making beau-

tifully decorated lanterns, to practising the art of using chopsticks and building of the ‘Great

Wall of Spratton’ in our outdoor classroom, the children have widened their knowledge of the

customs and traditions linked to this colourful and exciting time of the year. I shall miss my

greetings of ‘Kung Hei Fat Choi’ in the mornings!

Continuing with the excitement this week, Reception were, quite literally, bouncing up and

down when, with a hiss of brakes and a loud whir of its siren, a huge, red fire engine paid

them a special visit at school. After listening intently to a safety talk from the firefighters, the

children were treated to a tour of the fire engine and all its equipment. The highlight for

many, of course, was turning on the hose and watching the water gush out in a huge arc

across the playing fields – the trees have had a jolly good water, that’s for sure!

The countdown is now on in the lead up to World Book Day and there is already much excite-

ment amongst the children as they swap details of which story character they hope to come

dressed as. Ripples of World Book Day fever can also be felt amongst the Pre-Prep staff, with

morning tea break conversations frequently being dominated by requests for help with props

such as a green bowler hat, yellow face paint and even a pink tutu! There are going to be

some exciting sights in the playground next Thursday morning! In between costume planning,

the teachers have also been preparing a whole host of exciting activities. From book swaps, a

special assembly, costume parades and story times hosted in unexpected venues all over the

school, World Book Day promises to be a brilliant day of fun from beginning to end!

Finally, as Miss Brown continues steadily in her recovery at home, we are delighted that Mrs

Purcell will be continuing as a Teaching Assistant in RB.
