Paul’s letters are the oldest Christian documents we have. The first of them was written within 25 years of Jesus’ death, and the last may have been written before any of the gospels. These letters are also the largest collection of writing by any one person in the New Testament.

We can learn from Paul’s letters a great deal about Paul’s faith and his understanding of what Jesus Christ means for the life of the ordinary Christian. We can learn some of the problems that churches and persons were facing because of their faith and what Paul said was an answer to the problem. We can learn a lot about Paul as a person and how his faith can help us as persons.

Romans was written to pave the way for Paul’s visit to a church he had never seen, but whose help he needed as he began to preach the gospel in the western Mediterranean world. Romans is one of the fullest statements of Paul’s faith. He tries to show how Christianity is rooted in Judaism, but is a faith for all humanity. Romans is a book full of the power and grace of God and has been a source of inspiration and renewal in the church from earliest times to the present.

How Has God Equipped You

to Serve? Each year, the Committee on Nominations and Lay Leadership comes together to reflect on the gifted people in the FVUMC congregation and prayerfully make connections where one can best serve with joy and passion.

The church relies on the dedication and skills from a wide variety of volunteers who agree to serve on our committees and teams. These span topics including Christian formation, missions, finance, preschool, technology, etc.

As we approach our task, we wanted to give you an opportunity to express your interests and share how you believe God has equipped you to serve!

We invite you to respond with your thoughts to [email protected] so that we might have the benefit of knowing your interests. Our hope is to have the information by August 18.

Throughout the Bible, including Jeremiah 36 and in the book of Acts, we see many expressions of giftedness in the way people offered themselves to the work of God. Thanks so much for your input in helping us connect passion and ministry for 2018!

Blessings! Pastor Valerie Tyson [email protected]

Fulfilling Our ZOE Empowerment Program

CommitmentOur church has been funding a three-year commitment for a working group with ZOE Guatemala. Our three years are coming to a close later this fall, so Shawn Eller and David Bell from the FVUMC Missions team are visiting the working group “Los Triunfadores - The Winners” in October to show FVUMC’s support and commitment to them. We welcome your prayers and well wishes for Shawn, David and the kids in the ZOE program.

ZOE’s mission is not to give children temporary relief but to equip them to move beyond poverty and never need charity again — passing this on for generations to come. ZOE has a current enrollment of over 35,000 orphans and vulnerable children in its three-year empowerment program across seven countries and three continents. When graduates are added to this group, the number swells to over 67,000.

Children are grouped into mutually-supportive peer working groups and given access to the basic training and resources needed to grow their own food, start businesses, enroll siblings in school, attend vocational training, learn about God’s love for them, understand how to stay healthy and prevent disease, learn about child rights, and be connected to a supportive community. The program is three years in length to avoid groups forming long-term dependencies.

Travel to the Holy LandJanuary 23 – February 1, 2018

I would like to invite you to join Pastor Valerie and me on a Holy Land Classic Tour to the land of the Bible. This is a journey following in the footsteps of Jesus that will change the way you read the Bible as you learn why scholars refer to it as the “Fifth Gospel.”

Our tour theme is “Jesus: His Life, His Times, His Land, and His Hebrew Faith.” We will fly into Tel Aviv airport and begin our journey to the Sea of Galilee, Cana, Nazareth, Tel Megiddo and Caesarea.

From there, we will sojourn to Jericho, Qumran, Bethlehem and then to Jerusalem and the old city. We will spend time in the Garden of Gethsemane, Mount Zion, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and share Holy Communion in the Garden Tomb.

Please consider this our personal invitation to be part of this adventure in faith and join us in experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime journey walking where Jesus walked.

We are traveling with Educational Opportunities Tours, an organization that has been leading Christian travel tours since 1974. Having traveled with them several times, we have never been disappointed with their service and attention to detail. Trip brochures are available in the church office or can be emailed to you.

Tour Information SessionSunday, August 27 – 5:00 pm

Rev. Harold Salmon from EO Tours will share details of the trip and answer questions relating to the tour. Harold is a retired UMC pastor in the NC Conference and has led many trips abroad.

August Book ClubThe German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa

In 1939 Berlin, twelve-year-old Hannah Rosenthal and her family are no longer welcome in the place they called home. After many harrowing months, hope appears in the form of the SS St. Louis, a transatlantic liner offering Jews safe passage out of Germany. After a frantic search to obtain visas, the Rosenthals depart on the ship bound for Havana, only to discover that the promised overseas asylum is an illusion. Seven decades later in New York City, on her 12th birthday, Anna Rosen receives a strange package from an unknown relative in Cuba, her great-aunt Hannah. Its contents inspire Anna and her mother to travel to Havana to learn the truth about their family’s past, a quest that will help Anna understand her place and her purpose. Based on a true story, this novel gives voice to the joys and sorrows of generations of exiles, forever seeking a place called home.

To join the dinner and discussion on Friday, August 18 contact Suzanne Jones at [email protected] or Matilda Storm at [email protected].

UMW Circle of Faith: A Community of Women

After our summer break, the United Methodist Women’s Circle of Faith resumes its meeting schedule of gathering on the first Tuesdays of the month. The next gathering is Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 10 am in Room 116. All women are encouraged to attend! This is a community of women whose purpose is to know God, to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Christian Community BuildersFor many years, a team from FVUMC has quietly served whenever a need for wheelchair ramps or rebuilt decks comes to their attention. They serve throughout our area - Fuquay, Holly Springs, Apex, etc., and help people from the FVUMC church family and from the community.

The home owner is asked to pay what they can afford, and there are no labor costs involved. The work is usually completed on weekends. To get involved, contact Bob Anderson by email at [email protected].

Dear Fuquay-Varina UMC,

Thank you so much for sponsoring our Family Promise families this week at your church. We've felt the love and compassion that you've extended to each of us during this arduous time in our lives. You are a shining example of Christ. Bless each of you - your loved ones and your situations, and those that wanted to help - your prayers are appreciated.

Muchas Gracias, Gale and Kids

To the Christian Community Builders at FVUMC:

We would like to thank the friendly, efficient crew for building a ramp in our garage. My husband, Bruce, has been walking with a walker for about a year now. Stairs are pretty difficult now. Thank you for your program.

Sincerely, Ellen & Bruce H.

Dear FVUMC Family,

Thank you for everything you gave—food, time, and presence, to support our recent partnership with the American Red Cross! This was such a lovely opportunity to give in a way that is sometimes overlooked. ARC sent a note of thanks out to the beautiful donors who helped us reach our goal of 32 pints, but more importantly, supported the blood bank during a low time of year.

We had quite a number of first-time donors and some who “braved through” a bit of scary because of tricky veins, etc. The ARC team was awesome and told us how much they appreciated the warmth of reception in our community.

Thanks to everyone for getting the word out and to Pat Weldon, our Facilities Manager, who had the Centrum ready and remained on stand-by all afternoon for whatever was needed to manage the space. All of you absolutely “rocked” this great experience!

May I say, yet again, how dear this church family is?! So diverse in mission, love, caring, filling the niches wherever we believe Christ is calling us. Always blessing…always blessed!

Much love, Harriet Burgess, Blood Drive Coordinator

Special Offering on August 27 supports Disciple Bible Study Outreach Ministry

Birthed here in North Carolina, Disciple Bible Outreach Ministries connects those

who are incarcerated into Bible study with church volunteers. Jesus reminds us to be in

ministry to all people and specifically calls us to engage with those in prison. DBOM

grew from a call in 1995 to take Disciple Bible Study to people in prison. Today, thousands

of inmates have engaged in Disciple Bible Study in North Carolina prisons with

hundreds of local church volunteers. In addition, hundreds of juvenile offenders have

participated in the RINGS OF FELLOWSHIP program. Across the years, DBOM has flourished and grown into a national
